  • Some extensions of minimum spanning tree problem are NP-hard problem in which polynomial-time solutions for them do not exist. Because of their complexity, recently some researcher have used the genetic algorithms to solve them. In genetic algorithm approach the Prufer number is usually used to represent a tree. In this paper we discuss the problem of the Prufer number encoding method and propose an improved genetic operation. Using a numerical comparison we demonstrate the excellence of the proposed method.

  • This paper addresses a fleet operation planning problem for a static freight container transportation system in which all the transportation requirements are predetermined at the beginning of a planning horizon. In the transportation system under consideration, a number of loaded containers are to be moved between container storage yards. An optimal fleet planning model is used to determine the minimum number of vehicles required. Based on the results from the optimal model, a tabu-search based algorithm is presented to perform a given transportation requirements with the least number of vehicles. The performance of the new procedure is evaluated through some experiments in comparison with two existing methods, and the it is found that our procedure produces good-quality solutions.

  • Water hammer phenomena are important issues for the design and the operation of hydro power plants. Especially, if several reversible pump-turbines are coupled hydraulically there may be strong unit interactions. The precise prediction of all relevant transients is challenging. Regarding a recent pump-storage project, dynamic measurements motivate an improved turbine modeling approach making use of a Thoma number dependency. The proposed method is validated for several transient scenarios and turns out to improve correlation between measurement and simulation results significantly. Starting from simple scenarios, this allows better prediction of more complex transients. By applying a fully automated simulation procedure broad operating ranges of the highly nonlinear system can be covered providing a consistent insight into the plant dynamics. This finally allows the optimization of the closing strategy and hence the overall power plant performance.

  • This paper proposes a new syndrome-testable design method for large MOSPLA's. In the conventional syndrome test method, the testing array circuit for testability is added but it has the defect that the circuit gives effect on the normal operation of the basic PLA circuit. Therefore, by adding the shift registers to the product lines of the basic MOSPLA's this defect is eliminated and the number of test patterns is decreased. In order to reduce the number of fault free syndromes to be predetermined, also, one output line, which is connected to all product lines is added. Therefore the number of output lines be observed is decreased. And the analytical method to compute fault free syndromes is presented. By unsing this method, the time and the effort to compute the syndromes are decreased.

  • There are many possible representations in denoting both positive and negative numbers in the binary number system to be applicable to the complexity of the hardware implementation, arithmetic speed, appropriate application, etc. Among many possibilities, the signed-magnitude representation, which keeps one sign bit and magnitude bits separately, is intuitively appealing for humans, conceptually simple, and easy to negate by flipping the sign bit. However, in the signed-magnitude representation, the actual arithmetic operation to be performed may require magnitude comparison and depend on not only the operation but also the signs of the operands, which is a major disadvantage. In a simple conceptual approach, addition/subtraction of two signed-magnitude numbers, requires comparator circuits, selective pre-complement circuits, and the adder circuits. In this paper circuits to obtain the difference of two numbers are designed without adopting explicit comparator circuits. Then by using the difference circuits, a universal signed-magnitude adder/subtracter is designed for the most general operation on two signed numbers.

  • This study surveyed the fishing efficiency for Japanese common squid based on improvements made to LED fishing lamps by utilizing the training ship of Gangwon Provincial College. The training ship, Haesong-ho (24 tons), was equipped with seventy-two 150W electric power LED fishing lamps (10.8kW), and their fishing efficiency and fuel consumption level were surveyed for a total of ten times during the period between June 15, 2009 and July 27, 2009. In addition, the training ship was equipped with seventy-one 300W electric power LED fishing lamps (21.3kW) and their fishing efficiency and fuel consumption level were surveyed for a total of five times during the period between January 17, 2010 and August 4, 2010. In order to compare the fishing efficiency of LED fishing lamps, the catch of another fishing vessel equipped with Metal Halide (MH) fishing lamps of 120kW for the same period and at the same fishing grounds. The fuel consumption levels during the fishing operation of Haesong-ho was about 1,047.7 liters which was approximately 19.9% of the total fuel consumption level of 5,262.6 liters, and the fuel consumption level per operation hour was on average 9.2 liters. The number of Japanese common squid caught by the LED fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessel ranged from 12 to 1,640 squid for each fishing trial and the average quantity was 652. The number of Japanese common squid caught by the MH fishing lamp-equipped 10 fishing vessels ranged from 40 to 4,800 squid and the average quantity was 2,055. The fishing of Japanese common squid was done by the use of hand lines and an automatic jigging machine. The number of Japanese common squid caught per hand line and a single roller of the automatic jigging machine was in the proportion of 50.8% to 49.2% with respect to the LED fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessel. However, the number of Japanese common squid caught per hand line and a single roller of the automatic jigging machine was in the proportion of 86.4% to 13.6% with respect to the MH fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessel where most of the catch was made by hand lines. On the other hand, in comparing the number of Japanese common squid caught per automatic jigging machine, the number of squid caught by the LED fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessel was about the same or greater than the number of squid caught by the MH fishing lamp-equipped fishing vessel.

  • The Multi-Code CDMA systems that are proposed as an effective transmission methodology in the IMT-2000 systems allow higher rate services under the IS-95 CDMA infrastructure. The Multi-Code CDMA systems convert the higher rate data into the lower rate by serial to parallel operation and spread the converted data streams by the multiple walsh codes, and its mobile receiver needs multiple walsh generators and data correlators to demodulate simultaneously multiple walsh code channels. Therefore, the number of data correlators is increased as the number of traffic channels increases. In this paper, we proposed the new structure of the data correlators using walsh overlay coding, the shared accumulator, and FWHT(Fast Walsh Hadamard Transform) algorithm for reducing the bottle-neck effect resulting the increase of the number of data correlators.

  • This study was conducted to provide appropriate tending operation strategies for the natural deciduous forest, by the method of evaluating the stand quality, suggesting the removal plan for the undesirable trees, and predicting improvement cutting practice by tree quality evaluation. The results showed that average number of trees per ha was 717 stems, average DBH was 21.1cm. and average height was 13.6m. Canopy dominant species were in the order of Quercus serrata, Q. variabilis, Q. mongolica, Styrax obassia, and Ulmus davidiana var. japonica. Based on grades of four tree form factors for all tree in the study plots, we estimate the change of tree numbers. DBH and height with the improvement cutting by different tree grade. When the higher tree grade was applied to tending operation, the number of stem was decreased, but the values of DBH and height were not changed much, predicted to improve the stand quality.

  • The Internet today provides group communication model, multicast service. It is important to keep security for multicast communication. Member leaving is associated with scalability problem for group key management. If one member of the group is removed, new group key has to be changed and communicated to all remaining members of group. Modification and distribution of new group keys for rekeying is an expensive operation. Minimizing the number of messages and operation cost for generation of the composite keys are important evaluating criteria of multicast key management scheme. Periodic rekey helps reducing these important parameters rather than removing members sequentially in fashion one after another. In this paper, Hamming distance is calculated between every members to be removed. The members with Hamming distance less than threshold are selected for rekeying procedure. With running the round assignment algorithm, our model has advantages of reducing the number of message and operation cost for generation of the composite keys for rekeying.
