Preparation of Monodisperse Melamine-Formaldehyde Microspheres via Dispersed Polycondensation

  • We have successfully synthesized relatively monodisperse and cross-linked melamine-formaldehyde (M-F) microspheres by dispersed polycondensation and subsequent pH adjustment with serum replacement cleaning. The average particle sizes (equation omitted): weight-average and (equation omitted) : number-average), the polydispersity index (equation omitted), the number of particles N$\_$p/ and the gel content of the M-F microspheres were observed by varying the pH, the surfactant concentration, and the polymerization temperature. We observed that both the pH and the polymerization temperature were predominant factors in determining (equation omitted) and N$\_$p/, but the effect that the temperature and pH had on the gel content ( > 94% for all samples) was negligible. The exponents of the slopes of plots of N$\_$p/ versus pH and surfactant concentration were -10 and 0.6, respectively. Particle nucleation and growth were achieved within short periods; the incessant coagulation occurred even in the presence of surfactants.

Nucleation and Growth of b-Axis Oriented $PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ Thin Films on $LaSrGaO_4$ (100) Substrates

  • Good quality a-axis oriented thin films of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ may be grown by the use of a $PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (PBCO) layer as a template. Here we present a detailed study of the nucleation of the PBCO layer, explaining the orientations observed. It is determined that the wavy surface of a $LaSrGaO_4$ (LSGO) (100) substrate consists of the {101} planes by observing cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy images of the interface between the PBCO film and the substrate. The images and selected area diffraction patterns show that a mixed c-and b-axis oriented PBCO layer was initially grown on the substrate, followed by pure b-axis oriented PBCO growth. We explain that the c-axis oriented growth is the result of the growth of the PBCO (019) planes on the LSGO (101) planes. We conclude that the nucleation and growth of the PBCO films at the initial stages depends on the crystallographic plane of the substrate surfaces, however, as the film grows further, the kinetics of the deposition process favors b-axis oriented growth.

  • Domain structure and polarization switching in (001)-oriented $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-x%PbTiO_3$ (PMN-x%PT) crystals for x=20 and 35at% have been investigated in-situ by scanning force microscope (SFM) in a piezoresponse mode under a step DC electrical voltage. In the initial annealed condition, polar nano domains (PND) and domain striations oriented along {110} were observed in x=20 and x=35, respectively. For x=20, domain switching occurs by heterogeneous nucleation, where nucleation is not confined in the vicinity of domain boundaries, but rather can occur throughout the crystal volume. However, for x=35, domain switching tends to be preferentially initiated near pre-existing twin boundaries. With increasing the applying voltage, the nuclei density increased and assembled into {110} striations, indicating a stress-accommodated domain growth process. At higher voltage, nucleation occurs heterogeneously throughout the crystal volume.

The Observation of Nucleation & Growth during Water Vapor Induced Phase Inversion of Chlorinated Poly(vinyl chloride) Solution using SALS

  • Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.

Deformation Behavior and Nucleation Activity of a Thermotropic Liquid­Crystalline Polymer in Poly(butylene terephthalate)-Based Composites

  • Polymer composites based on a thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (TLCP) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) were prepared using a melt blending process. Polymer composites consisting of bulk cheap polyester with a small quantity of expensive TLCP are of interest from a commercial perspective. The interactions between the PBT chains and the flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) units in the TLCP phase resulted in an improvement in the compatibility of PBT/TLCP composites. TLCP droplets deformed and fragmented into smaller droplets in the PBT/TLCP composites, which resulted in TLCP fibrillation through the effective deformation of the TLCP droplets. The nucleation activities of the PBT/TLCP composites increased by adding even a small amount of the TLCP component.

Microwave plasma CVD에서 Ni 기판에 다이아몬드 박막 증착 (Diamond thin film deposition on Ni in microwave plasma CVD)

  • 2-step 증착법과 Bias-Enhanced Nucleation(BEN)법을 이용해 다결정 Ni 기판에 고품질의 다이아몬드 박막 합성을 연구하였다. $810^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 증착하여 soot충을 형성시킨 후 기판온도를 soot층의 형성이 억제되는 온도인 $925^{\circ}C$로 올려 5시간 증착하는 2-step법을 통해 고품질의 다이아몬드를 합성할 수 있었다. 또한, $925^{\circ}C$에서 -220V의 bias를 10분 동안 기판에 인가한 후 2시간 동안 증착하는 BEN법을 이용해 양질의 다이아몬드를 합성할 수 있었다. $925^{\circ}C$에서 bias 처리를 하지 않은 경우에는 10시간 동안 증착을 시도한 후에도 다이아몬드가 생성되지 않았다.

System Design and Performance Analysis of a Quick Freezer using Supercooling

  • Purpose: This study was conducted for enhancing the performance of a conventional quick freezer by introducing the supercooling state, using a low-temperature coolant. Methods: In the present investigation, the supercooling process was executed prior to quick freezing for reducing the time by which the temperature passes the zone of maximum ice crystal formation. Every food has different nucleation points and hence, we used silicone oil as the coolant for supercooling for easy modification of temperature. Additionally, for quick freezing, we used liquid nitrogen spray. Results: Using the heat exchanger-type precooler with silicone oil, the temperature of the chamber was easily changed for enabling supercooling. Particularly, the results of the freezing test with garlic indicated that this system improved the hardness of garlic after it was thawed, compared to the conventional freezing method. Conclusions: Before quick freezing, if the food item is subjected to the supercooling state, the time from nucleation to the temperature reaching the frozen state ($-5^{\circ}C$, which is the maximum ice crystal formation zone) will be shorter than that incurred using quick freezing alone. The combination of the heat exchanger-type supercooler and liquid nitrogen sprayer is expected to serve as a promising technology for improving the physicochemical qualities of frozen foods.

내식성, 내오염성 결정성 고분자 분리막의 제조 (Preparation of Chemical and Fouling Resistant Semicrystalline Membranes)

  • 아이소탁틱 폴리프로필렌과 대두유 시스템으로부터 열유도 상분리 및 연신공정에 의하여 중공사막을 제조하였다. 막의 구조와 성능에 관계되는 각종 조업변수들의 영향을 조사하였고 이들을 최적화하였다. 폴리프로필렌/대두유의 용융점도가 microfibril 형성에 영향을 미침을 확인하였고 기핵제를 첨가함에 따라 핵생성 밀도가 증가하여 연신에 의한 구정 간의 기공형성이 향상되었다. 막을 열처리함으로써 연신 시 유도되었던 stress를 이완시켜 막의 수축현상을 방지하여 다공도를 유지할 수 있었다. 기핵제를 첨가한 경우 고-액 상분리에 의하여 구조가 형성되며 응고조의 온도 변화에 따라 핵 생성 밀도가 변화하게 되고 이에 따라 연신에 의한 기공 형성이 영향을 받게 되었다. 기핵제를 첨가하지 않은 경우 핵 생성이 활발하지 않아서 주로 액-액 상분리 거동이 구조 형성에 영향을 미치게 되며 응고조 온도 변화에 따른 효과가 기핵제를 넣은 경우와는 반대의 경향을 나타내었다.

Effect of Critical Cooling Rate on the Formation of Intermetallic Phase During Rapid Solidification of FeNbHfBPC Alloy

  • 진공 가스분사법으로 제조된 Fe75B13P5Nb2Hf1C4 합금의 응고중 액상의 크기와 이에 따른 냉각속도의 변화가 정출상의 형성에 미치는 영향에 대한 고찰을 하였다. 고온 액상에서 동일한 조건으로 응고된 서로 다른 크기의 액상이 구형의 분말형태로 응고될 때 크기에 따른 임계냉각속도의 차이를 계산하였으며, 액상의 평균 반지름이 3배정도 크기 차이가 날 경우 고상으로 변태할 때 임계냉각속도가 13.5배까지 차이가 나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 임계냉각 속도의 차이에 따른 정출상의 형성과 정출상의 형태와 크기에 따른 탄화물의 형성 거동을 조사하여 열역학 계산으로 예측된 결과와 비교 분석하였으며, 분말입자의 크기가 20~45 마이크론일 경우 Hf과 Nb이 포함된 MC타입의 탄화물이 초정으로 형성 되는 것을 알 수 있었으며 이때 Hf과 Nb의 비율은 합금의 조성 및 냉각속도에 따라 변화됨을 관찰 할 수 있었다.
