Growing attention has been given to sterilizing and antibacterial effects of nano-silver, recently. Nano-silver solution can be applied to the heat exchanger in an air conditioner to prevent bad smell or bacteria. The present study is directed at the nozzle spray characteristics over a heat exchanger. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a nano-silver HVAC system. The effects of nozzle position and flow rate on the spray area over a horizontal surface have been investigated for various nozzles. The results obtained indicate that spray area is increased as the height of spray position is increased or mass flow rate is increased. The wetted area over a practical heat exchanger is also studied at a given nozzle height. It is found that the wetted area is gradually increased with an increase in the flow rate. However, the effect of flow rate on the wetted area is a little affected by flow rate in the range of too much flow rate. It is also found that the wetted area is decreased as the inclination angle of a heat exchanger is increased.
A systematic experimental study is carried out for the fire fighting monitor nozzle of 65A diameter to design and manufacture a new nozzle with better water spray performance than available domestic nozzles. The nozzle inlet pressure, flow rate and reach for the discharged water from the nozzle are measured by utilizing the experimental facility consisting of two pumps and piping system with a flow meter and pressure gauges. It was found that the baffle position and baffle head chamfering were the most sensitive design factors to be remarkably changed in the flow rate of the discharged water. Also, It was confirmed that the baffle position and the water exit area had the significant effect on the change in reach distance. The results obtained from this study are expected to be used effectively to design new nozzles with excellent spray performances and also to validate numerical analysis results for evaluating the water spray performance of fire fighting monitor nozzles.
This study has been conducted to investigate pumping characteristics of diffuser/nozzle based piezoelectric micropumps. The micropumps include a piezo disk (an actuator), a chamber and a set of diffuser and nozzle. Flow in the current micropumps is controlled by a set of diffuser and nozzle, not by a nap valve. The diffuser/nozzle based micropumps are more reliable in operation and are easier in manufacturing than the flap valve based micropumps. The flow rates of the piezoelectric micropumps have been closely analyzed with a numerical calculation. It has been found that the positions of the inlet and outlet of the micropump can influence the performance of the diffuser/nozzle based piezoelectric micropumps. This study may provide fundamental understanding for the design and analysis of the piezoelectric micropumps.
The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the local heat transfer characteristics in the upward free water jet impinged on a downward flat plate of uniform heat flux. The inner shape of rectangular nozzle used was sine curve type and its contraction ratio of inlet to outlet area was five. Experimental parameters considered were Reynolds number, nozzle exit-flat plate distance, and level of supplementary water. Local Nusselt number was influenced by Reynolds number, Prandtl number, supplementary water level, and distance between the nozzle exit and flat plate. Within the impingement region, the Nusselt number has a maximum value on the nozzle center axis and decreases monotonically outward from center. Outside of the impingement region, on the other hand, the Nusselt number has a secondary peak near the position where the distance from nozzle center reaches four times the nozzle width. However if nozzle exit velocity exceeds 6.2 m/s, the secondary peak appears also in the impingement region. The empirical equation for the stagnation heat transfer is a function of Prandtl, Reynolds, and axial distance from the nozzle exit. The optimum level of supplementary water to augment the heat transfer rate at stagnation point was found to be twice the nozzle width.
Experiments were conducted to show the characteristics of the flow on unventilated parallel plane jets. Measurements of mean velocity components and turbulent intensities were carried out with a particle image velocimetry. The measurements range of these experiments was Reynolds number of 5300 based on the nozzle width and the cases of nozzle-to-nozzle distance were 4, 6, 8, and 10 times the width of the nozzle. Results show that a recirculation zone with a sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. The positions, where maximum value of mean turbulent intensities and mean turbulent kinetic energy show, were at the same position with the merging point. The spread of jets in the merging region increases more rapidly than that of jets in the converging and the combined region. As nozzle-to-nozzle distances were increased, it was shown that merging and combined lengths were shorter.

Scramjets are a class of hypersonic airbreathing engine that are associated with realizing the technology required for economical, reliable access-to-space and high-speed atmospheric transport. After-burning augments the thrust produced by the scramjet nozzle and creates a more robust nozzle design. This paper presents a numerical study of three parameters and the effect that they have on thrust augmentation. These parameters include the injection pressure, injection angle and streamwise injection position. It is shown that significant levels of thrust augmentation are produced based upon contributions from increased pressure, mass flow and energy in the nozzle. Further understanding of the phenomenon by which thrust augmentation is being produced is provided in the form of a force contribution breakdown, analysis of the nozzle flowfields and finally the analysis of the surface pressure and shear stress distributions acting upon the nozzle wall.
A visualization study of shock formation of the supersonic jet nozzle using a Shadowgraph Method (SM) was carried out to investigate the effect of the longitudinal variation of coaxial pipe end tip position inside the supersonic nozzle. The experiment was performed for the Mach number range from 1.1 to 1.2 at nozzle exit. The well known shock cell structure was shown with the pipe end located deep inside the nozzle for the studied Mach number. With the pipe end approaches nozzle exit, it was found that the shock cell structure disappeared and turned into complex formation. In order to understand the mechanism of the shock structural change, computational simulation was carried out using the Navier-Stokes solver, FLUENT. Topological sketch was added with an aid of the visualization and the numerical simulation.
