This study was to find out the perceptions of toward death and caring behavior of lay persons in one community : One Island in Puan County, Chonbuk. The methodology of this study was ethnography. For this study, the fieldwork was conducted from October 1997 to July 1998. Data collected by in-depth interview and participant observations. The participants consisted fo were 17 persons of both sexes. The key informants were four specific people. The result of this study is as follows ; The people perceived two different kinds of death. Normal death, which means death from old age. The person was respected as an ancestor God and was believed to exist forever with their offspring. Abnormal death was regarded as negative, many had fears toward this kind of death. The causes of abnormal death were supernatural phenomena and had absolute holy meanings. Whether death was good or bad, the death was not personal, but collective events as family or community affairs and was interpreted as death and birth for their offsprings. Funeral rites were family-centered and/or com munity-centered. They did normal procedures for normal deaths for abnormal deaths, there were many protective ceremonies(BuJungMagi : the prevention of the taboo of uncleanliness) for the remaining people. These ceremonies combined confucism and shamanism. Caring behavior for dying persons was ruled as community-centered, reciprocal and reality-centered principles.

The 1968 Huế Massacre is a horrifying event rarely mentioned today in Vietnamese history and mass media. It is forgotten perhaps because it is simply indescribable. This study reads a song by Vietnamese musician Trịnh Công Sơn, where he attempted to chronicle the catastrophic images of the massacre. We use the notion of symbolic death in psychoanalysis to interpretation of the song, and shed a new light on how it captured this historical event which eludes understanding.

The major function of the thymus is to eliminate developing thymocytes that are potentially useless or autoreactive, and select only those that bear functional T cell antigen receptors (TCRs) through fastidious screening. It is believed that glucocorticoids (GCs) are at least in part responsible for cell death during death by neglect. In this review, we will mainly cover the topic of the GC-induced apoptosis of developing thymocytes. We will also discuss how thymocytes that are fated to die by GCs can be rescued from GC-induced apoptosis in. response to a variety of signals with antagonizing properties for GC receptor (GR) signaling. Currently, a lot of evidence supports the notion that the decision is made as a result of the integration of the multiple signal transduction networks that are triggered by GR, TCR, and Notch. A few candidate molecules at the converging point of these multiple signaling pathyways will be discussed. We will particularly describe the role of the SRG3 protein as a potent modulator of GC-induced apoptosis in the crosstalk.

Dwelling refers to a way of being that has to do with a cautious and guarded attitude. What has to be nurtured and preserved is the dweller's relationship with the fourfold of heaven and earth, divinities and mortals. This leads to the fourfold definition that mortals dwell insofar as they save the earth, receive heaven as heaven, await the divinities as divinities, and are capable of death as death. Heidegger sees the thing as the concrescence of what he calls the fourfold of earth, sky, mortals, and divinities. For Heidegger, true being means to be open to the fourfold, to tend the fourfold in its essence. C. Norberg-Schulz takes as his starting point Heidegger's notion of the thing as that in which the fourfold is assembled. The built space must be organized in a way that concrete places are created, places that are characterized by a specific genius loci. This idea refers to life in the warm seclusion of a traditional community, but is much less applicable to the functional networks and relationships that determine life in a modem society. Cacciari thinks that what is worth questioning is in particular the condition of homelessness perceived by Heidegger, and the possible consequences of this situation for architecture. The aim of this paper is to study the meaning of dwelling through Heidegger's concept of dwelling and the interpretations of C. Norberg-Schulz and M. Cacciari about it.

The advantages of implementing a virtual channel can be derived from the notion of the 'death of distance' that would result from electronic commerce. According to this view, the internet was going to make distance irrelevant, in that firms would no longer need to establish a physical presence in a geographical location in order to do business there. However, on-line firms selling physical products could take advantages of presence in the related off-line(brick and mortar) industrial area. This paper developed a conceptual framework that highlights the various types of synergies by location on-line businesses in the related off-line industrial area. Using data from 96 on-line ventures selling physical products, factor analysis was used to figuring out six synergies including improved customer trust, value-added service, cost savings, personnel and organizational efficiency, sharing products and customer information, relationship with suppliers, and relationship with local government. The six empirically derived critical synergy factors were then used to examine how they improve performance of the on-line ventures measured by Balanced Scorecard(BSC). According to lthe results, we concluded that the on-line firms selling physical products can take advantages of presence in the related off-line industrial area.

본 연구는 한국 불교와 대순진리회의 죽음관을 비교하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 한국 불교와 대순진리회는 죽음관을 설명하는 데 있어서 윤회(輪廻), 명부(冥府), 시왕(十王) 등의 다양한 개념들을 공동으로 사용한다. 그러나 불교와 대순진리회에서 이 개념들은 그 내용과 범주가 다를 뿐만 아니라, 각각의 교리체계 속에서 작동하는 방식과 중요성에서도 차이가 있다. 즉 불교와 대순진리회의 윤회 개념은 많은 비슷한 점들이 발견되기도 하지만 윤회의 기간, 또는 윤회 과정에 있어서 타력(他力)의 중요성과 관련된 차이점을 지적할 수 있다. 명부 관념의 경우는 비슷한 점들보다 차이점들이 우세를 차지하고 있다. 왜냐하면 대순사상에서는 불교의 명부설에서 나타난 시왕에 의해 이루어지는 심판 교설도 있기는 하지만, 대순진리회 교리체계 속에서 훨씬 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 소위 '명부공사'라는 또 하나의 새로운 교설도 있기 때문이다. 따라서 각각 전통에서 나타나는 윤회와 명부·시왕 관념들은 같은 개념과 범주를 갖는 것으로 파악할 수 없으며, 재정의할 필요가 있다. 다시 말하자면 불교의 윤회, 불교의 명부나 시왕과는 구분되도록 하여, '대순진리회 윤회', '대순진리회 명부·시왕'과 같은 새로운 개념으로 독립적인 사상 체계 맥락에서 재정의해야 하며, 더 넓은 종교 이론에 포함시켜야 한다.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inducible enzyme expressed in response to a variety of cytokines and other proinflammatory stimuli. It has been known that aberrant up-regulation of COX-2 is associated with resistance to apoptosis. Contrary to the above notion. treatment of MCF10A-ras cells with the anti-tumor agent ET -18-O-$CH_3$ caused increased expression of COX-2 and its mRNA transcript. while inducing apoptosis as revealed by proteolytic cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase. caspase-3 activation, and positive TUNEL staining. Wharton Esherick (1887-1970) is the pioneer of the Studio Furniture movement which was emerging after the Second World War in the United States. As Esherick began to work on his studio at Paoli, Pennsylvania from 1926, he became enormously influential in the Stuido Furniture movement until his death in 1972. He was connecting the English Arts and Crafts ideal to the post-war craft revival. As the work of William Morris did, in the period of consumerism Esherick's furniture gave a chance to purchase unique furniture to people who wanted a different taste. Not only his furniture is unique and hand-crafted also has sculptural quality which made his followers to see furniture as a different possibilities. His work was influential to the people who followed him after the war such as Arthur Carpenter, Wendell Castle, and Sam Maloof. In the roots of the craft revival, it is hard to underestimate the contribution of Esherick's notion of sculptural furniture.

본 연구는 좋은 죽음에 대한 사회적 관심을 반영하여 국내에 거주하는 중노년층이 인식하는 좋은 죽음이 무엇인가에 주목하였다. 구체적으로 중노년층의 좋은 죽음 인식을 유형화하고 그 특성을 파악하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 2018년 한국보건사회연구원에서 수집된 '웰다잉에 관한 전국민 인식조사' 데이터를 활용하여 중노년층의 좋은 죽음 인식유형을 잠재집단분석(LCA)을 통해 유형화하였으며, 기술통계 및 교차분석 등을 통해 유형별 인구사회학적 특성을 파악하였다. 연구결과, 소극적 인식형, 다층적 준비형, 현세중심적·죽음준비형의 3개 유형이 도출되었다. 도출된 유형들은 죽음의 가시성, 죽음의 여정에 대한 관점, 마지막으로 죽음이 갖는 사회적 관계성을 바탕으로 다층화 되었으며, 이러한 유형은 성별 및 주관적 건강상태에 따라 차이를 보였다. 이를 통해 우리 사회 웰다잉 구현을 위해 개인적·사회적 차원의 인식개선, 당사자 및 가족의 죽음준비를 위한 종합적 지원, 임종기 의료비 및 간병비 경감 등을 위한 제도 마련, 죽음의 자기결정권 확보를 위한 기반 구축 등의 정책적 제언을 제시하였다.

Objectives: Oleanolic acid, a minor element of ginsenosides, and its derivatives have been shown to have cytotoxicity against some tumor cells. The impact of cytotoxic effect of oleanolic acid 3-acetate on ovarian cancer SKOV3 cells and endometrial cancer HEC-1A cells were examined both in vivo and in vitro to explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Cytotoxic effects of oleanolic acid 3-acetate were assessed by cell viability, phosphatidylserine exposure on the cell surface, mitochondrial release of cytochrome C, nuclear translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor, depolarization of mitochondrial transmembrane potential (∆Ψ_m), and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In vivo inhibition of tumor growth was also assessed with xenografts in immunocompromised mice. Results: Oleanolic acid 3-acetate exhibited potent cytotoxicity toward SKOV3 and HEC-1A cells by decreasing cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner. Importantly, oleanolic acid 3-acetate effectively suppressed the growth of SKOV3 cell tumor xenografts in immunocompromised mice. Furthermore, oleanolic acid 3-acetate induced apoptotic cell death as revealed by loss of ∆Ψ_m, release of cytochrome c, and nuclear translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor with a concomitant activation of many proapoptotic cellular components including poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, Bcl-2, and caspases-8, caspase-3, and caspase-7. Oleanolic acid 3-acetate, however, caused a decrease in ROS production, suggesting the involvement of an ROS-independent pathway in oleanolic acid 3-acetate-induced apoptosis in SKOV3 and HEC-1A cells. Conclusion: These findings support the notion that oleanolic acid 3-acetate could be used as a potent anticancer supplementary agent against ovarian and endometrial cancer. Oleanolic acid 3-acetate exerts its proapoptotic effects through a rather unique molecular mechanism that involves an unconventional ROS-independent but mitochondria-mediated pathway.
