Two unrecognized species of Sparganium of Korea were found during the our field expeditions and phylogenetic analyses of specimens deposited in the Herbarium of Korea National Arboretum (KH). S. coreanum H. $L{\acute{e}}v$. was first reported as a new species based on the specimen (Taquet, 2150) collected from Jeju Island. It has been recognized as synonym or infraspecific taxa of S. stoloniferum and S. eurycarpum or even never recognized recently. However, phylogenetic tree showed that S. coreanum is monophyletic and has sister relationship with S. eurycarpum. Furthermore, additional distribution localities were also found by herbarium survey. Morphological characteristics and distribution information of S. coreanum will be discussed. Another Sparganium species found from Mt. Daeam is occurring either as floating or emergent. Although we could not identify this species since lack of any flowers or fruits for two year surveys, phylogenetic analyses results showed that this species belong to the clade of S. glomeratum, which is distributed in high elevation lakes and marshes of Europe, Asia, and North America. Additional survey of morphology and report will be needed.
A single specimen in the subfamily Coralliophilinae in Family Muricidae was collected from Jeju-do by SCUBA diving survey. It was identified as Hirtomurex nakamurai Kosuge, 1985 based on external morphological characteristics. The Coralliophilinae species, commonly known as coral snails, are broadly distributed in tropical and temperate oceans from shallow subtidal zones up to 1,000 m in depth. To date, only four Coralliophila species in the subfamily Coralliophilinae have been reported from Korean waters. Prior to this report, Hirtomurex species has not been reported from Korean waters yet. As a result of this study, a total of five species in two genera of subfamily Coralliophilinae are recorded as Korean mollusk fauna.
Invasive alien species (IAS) can affect agricultural ecosystem negatively and critically. The geographical distributions of nine IAS plants in Korean orchards and uplands were investigated. Ambrosia artemisiifolia distributed widely in Korean peninsula and Ambrosia trifida distributed intensively in Gyeonggi-do. Aster pilosus distributed in Gyeonggi-Gangwon region and Lactuca scariola distributed linear region from the north-western to south-eastern part of Korea. Hypochaeris radicata distributed mainly in Jeju-do and Solanum carolinense distributed in eastern Gyeonggi-do. Rumex acetosella and Sicyos angulatus sporadically occurred in Korean croplands and Eupatorium rugosum was found in one region only. The distribution of IAS plants in croplands was very similar to that in non-croplands suggesting that ecological position of arable lands is not different from that of non-arable lands. Therefore, IAS plants in the croplands should be managed for not only prevention of yield reduction, but also protection or maintenance of original ecosystem. Development of management methods apposite to current Korean status are required to control IAS plants in croplands.

Sparganium japonicum Rothert. is designated as a near threatened species by the National Institute of Biological Resources and is restrictively distributed in South Korea. To conserve and restore habitats of this plant, we investigated environmental characteristics and vegetation at five habitats during the growing season. Thirty plant species from seventeen families were found in the S. japonicum community. The species frequently found in this community included Utricularia vulgaris, Potamogeton distinctus, Phragmites japonica, Cicuta virosa, Persicaria thunbergii, Phragmites communis, Hydrilla verticillata. Maximum height of this plant reached at August and average height at five habitats is 120 cm at this time. Water and soil environmental factors showed low values compared with that of other wetlands. S. japonicum lived in not only shallow water level but also deep water level. These results can be helpful for S. japonicum habitat conservation and restoration.
A soudy on the distrobution and seasonal changes of the benthic macrovertebrates community was performed on the 5 intertidal rocky shores of Chujado in the Cheju-Channel during four seasons from March 1996 to February 1997.The macroinvertebrates identified in Chujado totally composed of 9 phyla, 18 classes, 38 orers, 147 species. The macroinvertebrates idetified according to the stations were 9 phyla, 138 species in Sinyangri(ST. 1); 8 phyla, 134 species in Younghungri(ST. 4);and 8 phyla, 131 species in Daeseori(ST. 5); The species diversities of the lower intertidal zones were higher than those of middle and upper intertidal zones, however, the seasonal appearance in number of species was not different among the stations. The vertically distributed dominant species in intertidal zone were; Nodifittorina exigua and Nerita japponica in the supralittoral zones; Monodonta labio labil and Buccinulum ferrea in the upper zones; Septifer keenae and Lunella coronata corensis in the middle zones; Purpura clavigara, S. keenae and Pomatoleios krausii in the submiddle zones; and Actinia mesembryanthemum, Tetracliata squamosa japonica and N. schrenckii in the lower zones. The intertidal community structures between Chujado and Cheju coast showed that Chujado composed of fewer number of species and lower value of species diversity and richness indices than Cheju coast.
Morphological reinvestigation, external characters and discriminant functional analysis(44 qualitative characters) were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea, and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi in order to clarify the limit of intersection and interspecies. And to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, number of corolla lobe and calyx lobe, and species were also distinguished by morphology of cauline leaf, and color and spot of corolla, respectively. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe. The results of the discriminal functional analysis indicated that characters of corolla were the most important qualitative characters to distinguish the Ophelia taxa, and morphology of seed and seed coat was useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. Therefore the difficult problems of identification of species were successfully solved, and the taxonomic position in intrageneric level was clarified on Korean Ophelia.
This study was conducted to clarify not only the phytogeographical distribution but also species characteristics of Korean-native Anacardiaceae. 6 species of I genus were ascertained from herbarium specimens and field survey of natural population. Rhus verniciflua have been mainly cultivated in Wonju region, Kangwon-do and Hamyang region, Kyeongsangnam-do, could be cultivated in all parts of Korea, especially more in cold area. R. trichocarpa was distributed in all parts except for some far-islands of South in Korea. Petiole was especially reddish. Fruits are matured in June-July, and have stiff trichomes. R. sylvestris was widely distributed in the subtropical-temperate and temperate zone, and mainly distributed in the seashore and islands under 36$^{\circ}$ in Korea. Leaflets and petiole was reddish, and fruits were glabrous. R succedanea was only distributed in Jeju-do and several islands which is subtropical zone in Korea. Leaflets were lanceolate to oblong, characterized by little trichomes. R.chinensis is a ubiquitous tree which is widely distributed in the temperate zone, in Korea, and ranged perpendicularly to 800-900m. Inflorescense was characterized by apical site. Fruit was covered with dense short hairs and sometimes milky latex. R. ambigua was only distributed in subtropical zone, native in Kwang-do and Sangbaek-do, Yeochon-gun, Chunlanam-do in Korea. Especially, this species was a vine, trifoliolate and most poisonous. Leaflets were coriaceous, glabrous, and revolute type.
Echinochloa (L.) P. Beauv. includes some of the noxious weeds, causing a serious yield loss when they are dominant in the fields. Identification of the Echinochloa is very difficult because many interspecific and intraspecific forms of the species are found. However, it is important to identify the species exactly and to know the genetic diversity of the species for effective weed management. This study was conducted to identify and summarize the Echinochloa species by comparing the genetic variation and relationship among Korean Echinochloa species using SSR. The genetic diversity of 107 individuals, including seven species were assessed using five SSR markers. UPGMA dendrogram generated two clades (I and II) and clade II divided again into two subclades (II-1 and II-2) whereas the model based genetic structure proposed four subpopulations. The two subpopulations were corresponded to clades I and II-1 and the other two were arranged to clade II-2 of the UPGMA dendrogram. We have concluded that E. colona and E. glabrescens might have not distributed in Korea. The biological varieties, praticola and echinata, of E. crus-galli should be treated as E. crus-galli. Korean Echinochloa should be summarized with four species, i.e., E. oryzicola, E. crus-galli, E. esculenta, and E. oryzoides.
A study on the distribution and community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates on the intertidal zone of Cheju Island was carried out from June 1988 to May 1989. The macroinvertebrates collected and identified were composed of 7 phyla, 14 classes, 29 orders, 71 families and 135 species in this study. The dominant species of the upper tidal zone were Nodilittorina granularis and Heminerita japonica, those of the middle tidal zone were Monodonta neritoides and Lunella coronata coreensis, However, Monodonta neritoides and Chlorostoma arhyrostoma lischkei were dominant in the lower tidal zone. Community dominant indices were significantly high in the upper tidal zone. Macuoinvertebrates species which have the ability of resistance to the physical factors such as, strong waves and exposure to the hot sunlight were mainly distributed on the intertidal zone of Cheju Island. The difference in the number of species among seasons was not significant, but thao among zones was quite apparent and the lower the zone, the more abundant.
Vascular plants, the structure and interrelationship of the forst vegetation in pyonsan peninsula national park were inverstigated by phytosociological, continuum analysis and ordination methods. The flora was composed of 119 families,411 genera, 609 species, 79 varieties, 10 forma or 698 taxa. Some characteristics of the plants have been represented such as ch-$D_1$-$R_5$ type in biological one, erect form in growth on. It is noticeable that lycoris aurea, carpinus tschonoskii var. eximia, corylus hallaisanensis and abeliophyllum distichun among the investigated plants delong to endemic and/or rare species. The forest vegetation was classified into seven communities: quercus variabilis, pinus densiflora, quercus serrat, platycarya, carpinus tschonoskii, quercus dentata, zelkova serrata community. and quercus variabilis, pinus densiflora and pinus rigida, were the commonest species among distributed species. In addition interrelationship between diversity and dominant indrx of quercus variabilis community was little different each other and that of accordance altitude also was not much distinguishable. Platycarya strobilacea, pinus densiflora and quercus variabilas community were distinguished different groups by polar ordination.
