Simulation based improved seismic fragility analysis of structures

  • The Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) based seismic fragility analysis (SFA) approach allows defining more realistic relationship between failure probability and seismic intensity. However, the approach requires simulating large number of nonlinear dynamic analyses of structure for reliable estimate of fragility. It makes the approach computationally challenging. The response surface method (RSM) based metamodeling approach which replaces computationally involve complex mechanical model of a structure is found to be a viable alternative in this regard. An adaptive moving least squares method (MLSM) based RSM in the MCS framework is explored in the present study for efficient SFA of existing structures. In doing so, the repetition of seismic intensity for complete generation of fragility curve is avoided by including this as one of the predictors in the response estimate model. The proposed procedure is elucidated by considering a non-linear SDOF system and an existing reinforced concrete frame considered to be located in the Guwahati City of the Northeast region of India. The fragility results are obtained by the usual least squares based and the proposed MLSM based RSM and compared with that of obtained by the direct MCS technique to study the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • Nowadays, the tendency of world air cargo is noteworthy and air traffic in terms of cargo throughput will no doubt grow significantly in the new Region, with India and China's booming economy and the upcoming Olympics 2008. For example, in the first 11 months of 2006 cargo traffic was increased by 6.3%. First of all, the market of air cargo in Korea grows very quickly and diversifies. It is an essential factor in the process of development of Northeast-Asia as a hub for Air Cargo logistics. However the process of air cargo in Korea is complex as compared with other north-east asia nations. At the same time, it has many problems and causes inconvenience to owners of freight. This paper investigated the process of air cargo in Korea now and analyzed problems of the process. We emphasize that 4PL is the excellent solution from among many alternatives. It is also worthy of notice that EPCglobal network strengthen the role of 4PL. In conclusion, the 4PL system based on EPCglobal network will result in a good success, so it will raise a prestige of air cargo in Korea to a higher position.

A Study on Network Construction Strategies for Long-Haul Low-Cost Carrier Operations

  • Purpose - This study aims to analyze the characteristics of network construction by Norwegian Air and AirAsia X, which are recognized as leading airlines in the long-haul LCC market. Based on this analysis, this study intends to provide implications for networking strategies for Korean LCCs that seek to enter the long-haul market when the aviation market stabilizes again upon the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology - To conduct the network analysis on long-haul low-cost airlines, the Official Airline Guide (OAG) Schedule Analyzer was used to extract long-haul data of Norwegian Air and AirAsia X. To analyze the trend of the long-haul route network, we obtained the data from 3 separate years between 2011 and 2019. The network was analyzed using UCINET 6.0 in order to examine the network structure of long-haul low-cost airlines and the growth trend of each stage. Findings - Analyzing the network of long-haul routes by visualizing the network structure of low-cost carriers showed the following results. In its early years, Norwegian Air's long-haul route network, centering on regional airports in Spain and Sweden, connected European regions, the Middle East, and Africa. As time passed, however, the network expanded and became steadily strong as the airline connected airports in other European countries to North America and Asia. In addition, in 2011, AirAsia X showed links to parts of Europe, such as London and Paris, the Middle East and India, and Australia and Northeast Asia, centering on the Kuala Lumpur Airport. Although the routes in Europe were suspended, the network continued to expand while concentrating on routes of less than approximately 7,000 km. It was found that instead of giving up on ultra-long-haul routes such as Europe, the network was further expanded in Northeast Asia, such as the routes in Korea and Japan centering on China. Originality/value - Until the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, Norwegian Air actively expanded long-haul routes, resulting in the number of long-haul routes quintupling since 2011. The unfortunate circumstance, wherein the world aviation market was rendered stagnant due to the outbreak of COVID-19, hit Norwegian Air harder than any other low-cost carriers. However, in the case of AirAsia X, it was found that it did not suffer as much damage as Norwegian Air because it initially withdrew from unprofitable routes over 7,000 km and grew by gradually increasing profitable destinations over shorter distances. When the COVID-19 pandemic ends and the aviation market stabilizes, low-cost carriers around the world, including Korea, that enter the long-haul route market will need to employ strategies to analyze the marketability of potential routes and to launch the routes that yield the highest profits without being bound by distance. For stable growth, it is necessary to take a conservative stance; first, by reviewing the business feasibility of the operating a small number of highly profitable routes, and second, by gradually expanding these routes.

NCAR 지역기후모형의 인도 여름 몬순의 모사 성능 (Performance of NCAR Regional Climate Model in the Simulation of Indian Summer Monsoon)

  • 아시아 주요 곡물 생산지의 경제 성장과 지표 이용 변화에 따른 인간 활동의 증가는 아시아 몬순의 경향을 변화 시켰다. 본 연구에서는 지표-해양 대비, 하층제트 기류(LLJ), 티벳 고층 및 상층 편동풍 제트 기류를 포함한 인도 여름 몬순의 중요한 구성 요소를 모사하여 지역기후 모형 (RegCM3)의 성능을 평가하였다. 3년(1994: 다우 해, 2002: 평균 해, 2002: 가뭄 해)의 비교 자료를 선택하여 RegCM3은 매년 4월 1일부터 10월 1일까지 60 km의 해상도로 적분하였다. 순환과 강수 모사 결과는 NCEP/NCAR 재해석 자료와 Global Precipitation Climatology Centre(GPCC)의 관측 자료로 검증하였다. RegCM3 모형 모사의 중요 결과는 다음과 같다. (a) LLJ 는 다소 강하였으며 아라비아해에서 다우 해에 두 개로 분할되었으나, 평균 및 가뭄 해에서는 분할되지 않았다. (b) 단일의 대형 고기압이 다우 해에 존재하였으나, 가뭄 해에는 약하고 두 개의 고기압대로 분할되었다. (c) 강수의 공간분포 모사는 대부분 인도 지역에서 GPCC의 관측 강수량과 유사하였다. (d) NIMBUS-7 SMMR 적설 자료를 이용한 민감도 실험에서 북동 및 남부 인도 반도 지역에서 주로 강수량의 감소가 나타났으며, 티벳 지역에서는 4월 적설량이 0.1m 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

A Study on Maritime Trade between Korea, China and Japan in the CheongHaeJin of the 9th Century

  • This paper has focusing CheongHaeJin's maritime trading activities between Korea, China and Japan in the 9th century. In operation of CheongHaeJin which Chang BoGo was given a key role, CheongHaeJin creates three nation's wealth in triangular trade among Korea, China and Japan. And also, CheongHaeJin's contribution is considerable to the maritime trade development of Northeast Asia through establishing trading advance base in China and Japan, and organizing Shilla's people in China. Chang BoGo justified the control over small business groups of the west and south sea of Korea and the east and south sea of China by keeping pirates away His trade groups controlled foreign trade of three countries: Shilla, the Dang Dynasty of China and Japan. They connected Persia, India, Southeast Asia, and China. CheongHaeJin's key success factors of the maritime activities are summarized as follows; There is a possibility of searching that successful factor from the people of operator of CheongHaeJin. Based on oceanic adventurous spirit with character and progressive thinking could complete the rally of sea influence and composition of fleets. Secondly, the success factor is the excellent operational ability and leadership which learned in the Dang Dynasty of China. Thirdly, In 9th century, International political context was suitable for CheongHaeJin's construction and operation. Such political circumstances had given to CheongHaeJin remunerative position. Finally, Although central government could not maintain the sea traffic securities, Chang BoGo's ocean trading fleets guaranteed the safe fishing industry of people and security of sea traffic.

Prognostic Relevance of Human Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (hTERT) Expression in Patients with Gall Bladder Disease and Carcinoma

  • Background: Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) has been stated as an Indian disease, with the highest number of cases being reported from certain districts of northeast India, which has an ethnically distinct population. Unfortunately there are no scientific reports on the underlying molecular mechanisms associated with the pathogenesis of the disease from this region. Aim: The present study evaluated the role of differential expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in the development of gall bladder anomalies. Materials and Methods: Blood and tissue samples were collected from patients undergoing routine surgical resection for clinically proven cases of gallbladder disease {cholelithiasis (CL, n=50), cholecystitis (CS, n=40) and GBC (n=30) along with adjacent histopathologically proved non-neoplastic controls (n=15)} with informed consent. Whole blood was also collected from age and sex matched healthy controls (n=25) for comparative analysis. Differential hTERT mRNA expression was evaluated by semi-quantitative rt-PCR and real-time PCR based analysis using ${\beta}$-actin as an internal control. Evaluation of differential hTERT protein expression was studied by Western blot analysis and immunoflourescence. Statistical analysis for differential expression and co-relation was performed by SPSSv13.0 software. Results: Gallbladder anomalies were mostly prevalent in females. 유라시아 이니셔티브와 환동해권 전략 (Eurasia Initiative and East Sea Rim Maritime Community)

  • In September 2013, President Park Geun-hye announced her controversial "Look North" policy, of which the most salient aspect is the "Eurasia Initiative". This comprises various proposals designed to overcome existing constraints by developing new markets and creating new economic partners in continental areas from which South Korea has been alienated since the end of World War II, and this dovetails nicely with China's One Belt, One Road Initiative. The concepts of the "Silk Road Rail Express (SRX)" and the "East Sea Rim Maritime Community (ESRMC)" have also been discussed. SRX is at present a purely symbolic railroad project intended to encourage individual, cultural, trade and diplomatic exchanges. ESRMC is a model for establishing an ad hoc community to promote regional economic cooperation around the East Sea. President Park's Eurasia Initiative will provide South Korean investment for the Northeast to complement Russian plans, like the "Northern Energy Road" being built by Gazprom, and Chinese plans, like the Chang-Ji-Tu Development Plan for the North Korean port of Rajin. China's trade, as well as its energy and food supplies, pass through the Strait of Malacca and the Indian Ocean, and are thus vulnerable to interdiction by India or the US. China is therefore trying to reduce its exposure geopolitical risk by establishing a network of corridors between the Belt and the Road to provide alternative paths. The "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor" and the "China-Myanmar Economic Corridor" provide such connections, and South Korea hopes that SRX and ESRMC can become part of a "China-South Korea Economic Corridor". This concept could do much to revitalize the underdeveloped northern provinces of China and Russia's Far East, not to mention North Korea. By linking up the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Trans-China Railway, the Trans-Mongolian Railway and the Trans-Korean Railway all these Asian countries will be connected to one another, and ultimately to Europe. An interim connection between China and South Korea using a rail-ferry has also been proposed.

Molecular evolutionary analysis reveals Arctic-like rabies viruses evolved and dispersed independently in North and South Asia

  • Background: Arctic-like (AL) lineages of rabies viruses (RABVs) remains endemic in some Arctic and Asia countries. However, their evolutionary dynamics are largely unappreciated. Objectives: We attempted to estimate the evolutionary history, geographic origin and spread of the Arctic-related RABVs. Methods: Full length or partial sequences of the N and G genes were used to infer the evolutionary aspects of AL RABVs by Bayesian evolutionary analysis. Results: The most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) of the current Arctic and AL RABVs emerged in the 1830s and evolved independently after diversification. Population demographic analysis indicated that the viruses experienced gradual growth followed by a sudden decrease in its population size from the mid-1980s to approximately 2000. Genetic flow patterns among the regions reveal a high geographic correlation in AL RABVs transmission. Discrete phylogeography suggests that the geographic origin of the AL RABVs was in east Russia in approximately the 1830s. The ancestral AL RABV then diversified and immigrated to the countries in Northeast Asia, while the viruses in South Asia were dispersed to the neighboring regions from India. The N and G genes of RABVs in both clades sustained high levels of purifying selection, and the positive selection sites were mainly found on the C-terminus of the G gene. Conclusions: The current AL RABVs circulating in South and North Asia evolved and dispersed independently.

한국 및 일본의 수도권 공항의 현황과 협력 (Current Situation and Cooperation on the Metropolitan Airport between Korea and Japan)

  • 본 논문은 한국의 수도권공항인 김포국제공항, 인천국제공항과 청주국제공항(2012년부터 2014년가지 국무조정실, 재경조정실, 재정경제부, 건설교통부 등 관리 경제부처를 필두로 12부4처2청 등 49개의 중앙행정기관이 2014년까지 순차적으로 이전하게 되는 행정중심복합도시인 세종시의 관문 역할을 하게 됨)과 일본의 수도권공항인 나리다국제공하, 하네다(동경)국제공항의 현황과 문제점, 한 일간 수도권공항간의 협력내용과 상호관계, 본 연구과제에 대한 다각적인 면에서 검토한 개선안 등을 순서대로 제시하였다. 특히 본 연구과제에 대한 개선 방안으로는 (1)한 일간 항공자유화협정의 조속체결, (2) 새로운 항로개설과 저 운임항공회사(LCC)의 운항과 대책, (3) 양국 수도권공항들의 효율적인 이용계획, (4) 동북아시아의 항공시장에 있어 상호협력관계도 설명하였다. 1990년대부터 한 일 수도권공항간의 항공여객과 화물의 수송량은 극적으로 증가하고 있으며 이와 같은 추세는 양국의 경제성장을 촉진시키고 있다. 그러나 항공수송에 있어 양국의 수도권공항이 요구하고 있는 항공수요에 부응하기 위한 항공기의 좌석과 공항의 주기장은 아직도 충분히 확보되지 못하고 있다. 또한 수도권공항의 능력, 안정성확보 및 환경문제도 제기되고있다. 특히 각 나라의 수도권공항은 그 나라 국력의 상징이며 출입국을 하게 되는 관문이기 때문에 여객의 편의성과 신속성을 최대한으로 확보되어야만 한다. 아시아의 항공수송시장은 무제한경쟁시대에 접어들고 있어 아시아각국 들은 계속 허브공항의 확장개발계획에 노력을 집중하고 있으며 이와 같이 계속되고 있는 공항확장 개발계획의 경쟁을 극복하고 성공적으로 수행하기 위하여서는 한국과 일본간에 보다 긴밀한 협력시스템의 구축이 필요하다고 본다. 동북아시아의 항공시장에 있어 여객들의 편의와 빠른 여행을 지원하기 위해 김포공항과 하네다공항간의 정기 셔틀항공편의 증편과 청주국제공항과 하네다공항간의 정기 셔틀항공편의 개설을 위하여 한 일간에 새로운 "오픈 스카이협정" 의 체결이 바람직하다고 본다. 한걸음 더 나가 김포공항과 상해의 홍챠오공항 간에 정기 셔틀항공편의 연내 취항 및 내년 북경 올림픽을 대비하기 위하여 김포공항과 북경공항간의 정기 셔틀항공편의 개설과 일본도 금년 10월8일부터 하내다공항과 상해의 홍챠오공항 간에 정기 셔틀항공편의 의 취향과 하내다공항과 북경공항간의 정기 셔틀항공편의 개설을 추진하기 위하여 한 일 중 3국간에 상호 협력하여 새로운 "오픈 스카이협정" 의 체결을 종합적으로 검토되어야만 할 시기가 왔다고 본다.
