  • Boiler efficiency has a direct impact on energy consumptions, which results in lower cost of operations and services. Usually high efficiency boilers are regarded as boilers with an efficiency of greater than 90%. However, it is likely that normal boilers are running at significantly lower efficiencies than this. This paper presents a process of developing a highly efficient energy consumption boiler. We adopt direct heat method while normal boilers are designed as indirect heat method. The submerged combustion method is considered to design for very high efficient boiler.

  • The usual method of classification for metal poor stars is based on the normal standard stars. In this study, we show that among the sample of stars classified by this method, a systematic bias in the observed classes of metal weakness is found and, also that this method is not appropriate for classification of metal poor stars, by showing that the spectral line dependences on the temperature and pressure in the extreme metal poor stars are different from those in the normal standard stars. Therefore, we suggest that the 3-dimensional classification system, like 2-dimensional MK system, is necessary for an accurate classification of metal poor stars.

  • Acetabular dysplasia is a condition defined by inadequate development of an individual's acetabulum. Individual diversity of the symptoms in this disease needs safe and accurate preoperative planning. Technologies that utilize multidimensional image information are thus important. The assessment method by Janzen et al. was suggested a coefficient method in evaluation of acetabular dysplasia. In this study, we applied it, using a three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) on the koreans. 19 cases of the normal hips and 4 cases of the acetabular dysplasia were investigated to evaluate the proved method; 3D CT was used to define the geometric center of the femoral head and to measure center edge angles at $10^{\circ}$ rotational increments around the acetabular rim. Mean and standard deviation in CEAs (Center Edge Angle) of normal 19 hips at $10^{\circ}$ rotational increments from anterior to posterior rim were determined, and termed as a 'normal curve'. Then this normal values were compared with the CEA data measured from 4 cases of acetabular dysplasia patiens. Quantative comparison of the CEA values between the normal cases and dysplasia cases was successfully demonstrated, and thus, we claim that this simple CT method of assessing acetabular dysplasia can be well applicable to diagnosis, quantification and surgical planning for adult acetabular dysplasia patients.

  • In urban tunnels, namely, in case there are residents in the near distance, we normally use non-vibration and ambient vibration which are not blasting methods because it’ impossible to meet the blasting vibration regulation with only normal explosives. However, non-vibration methods not only cause increase of excavating cost, but need much time than explosives. Generally, the lower velocity explosives with 2,000 m/s VOD have been applied to ambient vibration blasting in open cut area, but difficult in tunneling in its use. However, by charging the hole together with lower velocity explosives and normal explosives, we have got the result which shows 20~30% vibration decrease compared with using only normal explosives. Therefore, I’ like to suggest the blasting method which is able to do as ambient vibration using lower velocity explosives mixed with normal explosives in urban tunnel and the area which is adjacent to security facilities within the vibration regulation.

  • Numerous studies have shown that normal inverse Gaussian (NIG) distribution adequately fits the empirical return distribution of financial securities. The estimation of parameters can also be done relatively easily, which makes the NIG distribution more useful in financial markets. The maximum likelihood estimation and the method of moments estimation are easy to implement; however, we may encounter a problem in practice when a relationship among the moments is violated. In this paper, we investigate this problem in the parameter estimation and try to find a simple solution through simulations. We examine the effect of our adjusted estimation method with real data: daily log returns of KOSPI, S&P500, FTSE and HANG SENG. We also checked the performance of our method by computing the value at risk of daily log return data. The results show that our method improves the stability of parameter estimation, while it retains a comparable performance in goodness-of-fit.

  • Although the human genome has been nearly completely sequenced, the functions and the roles of the vast majority of the genes, and the influences of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these genes are not entirely known. A modified mutation detection method was developed for large-scale cloning of the possible SNPs between tumor and normal cells for facilitating the identification of genetic factors that associated with cancer formation and progression. The method involves hybridization of restriction enzyme-cut chromosomal DNA, cleavage and modification of the sites of differences by enzymes, and differential cloning of sequence variations with a designed vector. Experimental validations of the presence and location of sequence variations in the isolated clones by PCR and DNA sequencing support the capability of this method in identifying sequence differences between tumor cells and normal cells.

  • Because of the robust nonlinear characteristics appearing in today's modern power system, a strong interaction exists between the angle stability and the voltage stability, which were conventionally studied insularly. However, as the power system is a complex unified system, angle instability always happens in conjunction with voltage instability. The authors propose a novel method to analyze this type of stability problem. In the proposed method, the theory of normal forms of vector fields is utilized to treat the auxiliary dynamic system. By use of this method, the interaction between response modes caused by the nonlinearity of the power system can be analyzed. Consequently, the eigenvalue analysis method is extended to cope with performance analysis of the power system with heavy nonlinearity. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified on a 3-bus power system.

  • In two dimensional mechanical design analysis, quadrilateral element mesh is preferred because it provides more accurate result than triangular element mesh. However, automation of quadrilateral element mesh generation is much more complex because of its geometrical complexities. In this study, an automatic quadrilateral element mesh generation algorithm based on the boundary normal offsetting method and the boundary decomposition method is developed. In so doing, nodes are automatically placed using the boundary normal offsetting method and the decomposition method is applied to decompose the designed domain into a set of convex subdomains. The generated elements are improved by relocation of the existing nodes based on the four criteria - uniformity, aspect ratio, skewness and taper degree. The developed algorithm requires minimal user inputs such as boundary data and the distance between nodes.

  • In this paper, We consider some generalization of these five basic indices to cover non-normal distribution. The proposed generalizations are compared with the five basic indices. The results show that the proposed generalizations are more accurate than those basic indices and other generalization in measuring process capability. We compared an estimation methods by Clements with based on sample percentiles WVM to calculate the proposed generalization as an example The results indicated that Clements method is more accurate than percentile method, WVM in measuring process capability But the calculations of percentile method are easy to understand, straightforward to apply, and show be valuable used for applications.

  • A new method of digital image analysis technique for medical images of cancer cell is presented. This paper deals with the cancer cell discrimination. The object images were the Thyroid Gland cell images that were diagnosed as normal and abnormal. This paper proposes a new discrimination method based on fuzzy logic algorithm. The focus of this paper is an automatic discrimination of cells into normal and abnormal of medical images by dominant feature parameters method with fuzzy algorithm. As a consequence of using fuzzy logic algorithm, the nucleus were successfully diagnosed as normal and abnormal. As for the experimental result, average recognition rate of 64.66% was obtained by applying single parameter of 16 feature parameters at a time. The discrimination rate of 93.08% was obtained by proposed method.
