This paper presents the normal force minimization design and the analysis of normal force effect which acts on the characteristics of the Synchronous Permanent Magnet Planar Motor (SPMPM) with new array. The experiments are applied to verify the analytical analysis. There is no doubt that the significant reduction of normal force and the experimental values dovetail nicely with the simulation.
Nano adhesion and friction between a Sj$_3$N$_4$ AFM tip and thin silver films were experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in various ranges of normal load. Thin silver films deposited by IBAD (ion beam assisted deposition) on Si-wafer (100) and Si-wafer of different surface roughness were used. Results showed that nano adhesion and friction decreased as the surface roughness increased. When the Si surfaces were coated by pure silver, the adhesion and friction decreased. But the adhesion and friction were not affected by the thickness of IBAD silver coating. As the normal force increased, the adhesion forces of bare Si-wafer and IBAD silver coating film remained constant, but the friction forces increased linearly. Test results suggested that the friction was mainly governed by the adhesion as long as the normal load was low.
Sole in the footwear usually modified with foaming agent on the polymer resin to improve the lightweightness and crush-cushion effect. In this study, we investigated rheological properties for polymer resin filled with the different type and concentration of foaming agent, capsule type foaming agent and organo-chemical foaming agent, under the time sweep test. Curing times of each polymer resin with different kind of foaming agent are delayed than reference material (epoxy resin with curing agent). In case of adding capsule type foaming agent, however, there is appropriate concentration to reduce the curing time, relatively. When foaming agent is activated, foaming force inflates the sample in contrast to condensation force of curing and then axial normal force develop to the (+) direction. Interestingly, by increase concentration of foaming agent, there is a specific point to break down the axial normal force development. The reason for this phenomenon is that coalescence of foams induce the blocking of axial normal force development.
This paper presents a molecular dynamics simulation-based numerical investigation of the influence of surface energy on water lubrication. Models composed of a crystalline substrate, half cylindrical tip, and cluster of water molecules are prepared for a tribological-characteristic evaluation. To determine the effect of surface energy on lubrication, the surface energy between the substrate and water molecules as well as that between the tip and water molecules are controlled by changing the interatomic potential parameters. Simulations are conducted to investigate the indentation and sliding processes. Three different normal forces are applied to the system by controlling the indentation depth to examine the influence of normal force on the lubrication of the system. The simulation results reveal that the solid surface's surface energy and normal force significantly affect the behavior of the water molecules and lubrication characteristics. The lubrication characteristics of the water molecules deteriorate with the increasing magnitude of the normal force. At a low surface energy, the water molecules are readily squeezed out of the interface under a load, thus increasing the frictional force. Contrarily, a moderate surface energy prevents expulsion of the water molecules due to squeezing, resulting in a low frictional force. At a high surface energy, although squeezing of the water molecules is restricted, similar to the case of moderate surface energy, dragging occurs at the soil surface-water molecule interface, and the frictional force increases.
Normal modes of solids HF, HCl and polyethylene having the exciting spectrometric phenomena have been evaluated by taking the lowest temperature phase of these species in the solid. The solids HF and HCl have the same space group as C$_{2}{\nu}$, and polyethylene has a space group with D$_{2h}$. The normal modes were obtained by the valence force field with modified force constants and a quantitative description of the normal mode is adjusted by the potential energy distribution (PED). From the PED, the most fittable force constants are also obtained. We have intended to calculate the normal modes by using the smallest size of the model and the simple computational process. To remove the edge effects being occurred in constructing the single cluster model, different from the boundary condition being generally used up to now, the idea of pseudolattice method being successfully applied to MO calculations of solid was extended to normal mode analysis in order to give the same environment for all moecules in a chosen cluster. By using the above valence force field and boundary condition, we obtain the assigned frequencies and compare those results with the results obtained by others.
With comparison of maximum vertical reaction force and lower limb on drop landing between normal and flat foot group, this study is to provide fundamental data of the prevention of injury and the treatment of exercise which are frequently occurred on flat foot group's drop landing. The surface electrodes were sticked on lateral gastrocnemius muscle, medial gastrocnemius muscle, tibialis anterior and the drop landing on a force plate of 40cm was performed with a normal group who had no musculoskeletal disease and a flat foot group of 9 people who had feet examinations. Vertical reaction force were significantly statistically different between two groups(p<.001). Muscle activity of lower limbs in all three parts were not statistically different but showed high tendency on average in the flat foot group. The flat foot group had difficulties in diversification of impact burden and high muscle activity. Therefore, it was suggested that muscular strengthening of knee joints and plantar flexions of foot joints which were highly affected in impact absorption will be required.
Generally, thrust force of double-sided LPM is more powerful than that of single-sided LPM. Also, double-sided LMP can be effectively applied to the high-precision position system with its simple control scheme. However, An equality between two airgap lengths Is a necessary condition for its high performance. If a little difference between two airgaps is existed, unbalanced normal force and undesirable vibration will be generated. Additionally, even though two airgap lengths are absolutely same, undesirable vibration can be generated because the direction of instantaneous normal force on mover is changed according to excitation methods. An effect of inequality of two airgap lengths is presented in this paper. Distribution of airgap permeance vs. relative displacement is analyzed by two dimensional finite element method. Excitation From this results, current waveforms to reduce the undesirable vibration is proposed.
This paper deals with skew and overhang effects of permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM). The detent force and thrust characteristics considering skew and overhang effects of permanent magnet are analyzed by 3D finite element method and the results are compared to experimental values. As skew and overhang are applied to permanent magnet, the thrust is almost the same value but the detent force is reduced remarkably. By harmonic analysis, the distortion ratio of thrust is remarkably reduced from 4.29[%] to 2.3[%]. and, the ripple ratio of thrust is decreased from 8.2[%] to 3.56[%] at the same time. But, the lateral force which operate as the perpendicular direction of skew direction is generated. The lateral force and normal force acts by braking force between mover and LM-guide.

Nano-scale studies on adhesion and friction were conducted in Si-wafer (100) using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Glass (Borosilicate) balls of radii 0.32$\mu\textrm{m}$, 1.25$\mu\textrm{m}$, and 2.5$\mu\textrm{m}$, mounted on cantilever (Contact Mode type NPS) were used as tips. Adhesion and friction between Si-wafer and glass tips were measured at ambient temperature (24${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$) and humidity (45${\pm}$5%). Friction was measured as a function of applied normal load in the range of 0-160 nN. Results showed that, both adhesion and friction increased with the tip radii. Also, friction increased linearly as a function of applied normal load. The effect of tip size on adhesion and friction was explained as the influence of the capillary force exerted by meniscus and that of the contact area on these parameters respectively. The coefficient of friction was estimated in two different ways, as the slope from the plot of friction force against the applied normal load and as the ratio between the friction force and the applied normal load. Both these estimates showed that the coefficient of friction increased with the tip size. Further, the influence of the adhesion force on the coefficient of friction was also discussed.
Piezoelectric ceramics is an active element that makes stator to vibrate to generate rotational force in ultrasonic motors. In drive of ultrasonic motors, many factors that affect to the resonance characteristics of piezoelectric ceramics exist. For example, those factors are bonding condition with elastic body, the magnitude of electric field, the normal force for frictional drive and the emission of heat due to vibration and friction and so on. Therefore, it is important to research the inclination of property variation of piezoelectric ceramics in circumstance that has complex elements. In this paper, we focused and analyzed the resonance characteristics of ultrasonic motor due to the magnitude of the driving voltage and normal force.
