This study has its intention to investigate the water quality of non-point source which is runoff from roads. We have classified and selected twelve sites as city road, industrial road, national road and mountain road by considering their traffic volume and surroundings. Water quality was analyzed based on BOD, COD, SS, T-N and T-P and the concentrations were measured by sampling after rainfall with the interval of 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes. BOD was the highest in city road with 57.6 mg/L and the lowest in mountain road with 45.0 mg/L. For COD, the highest concentration in industrial road was 146.5 mg/L and the lowest was in mountain road with 98.0 mg/L. The run off concentration of SS was up to maximum 630.0 mg/L (average 280.4 mg/L) which was remarkable compared to other types of road. It showed its lowest concentration in national road with 76.0 mg/L. T-N and T-P were the highest in industrial road and the lowest in mountain road. We found out that the runoff concentration was high with large amount of traffic volume and it seemed to be high in city road and industrial road where they were largely affected by their surroundings. Relatively, national road and mountain road seemed to show low concentration as they have less traffic volume and less affected by their surroundings.
This research was conducted to understand the magnitude and nature of the stormwater emissions with the goal of quantifying stormwater pollutant concentrations and mass emission rates of pollutants. Eight highway sites in Southern California area were monitored for three years with collecting of grab and flow-weighted composite samples, rainfall and runoff flow. Generally the EMCs cannot be determined by simple statistical averaging of measured pollutant concentrations because of random characteristics of runoff quality and quantity. Therefore, this manuscripts will show a new EMC determination method. The EMC ranges of 95% confidence intervals are 102.78-216.37mg/L for TSS, 104.53-251.79mg/L for COD, 5.42-10.58mg/L for oil & grease and 2.42-10.18mg/L for TKN. The ranges of washed-off mass loading are determined to $0.06g/m^2-17.27g/m^2$ for TSS and $0.1-3.23g/m^2$for COD.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the load of non-point sources pollutant at a paddy plot located at the valley watershed during irrigation period. Irrigation, runoff and water quality data in the paddy plot were analyzed periodically from June 1 to October 31 in 2005. The observed amount of precipitation, irrigation, runoff for the experimental paddy plot during the irrigation period was 1,297.8, 223.2, and 825.4mm, respectively. Total-N concentrations ranged from 3.73 to 18.10mg/L, which was generally higher than the quality standard of agricultural water (1.0mg/L). Total-P concentrations ranged from 0.111 to 0.243mg/L and the average was 0.139mg/L. The observed runoff pollutants loadings from the paddy plot were measured as 34.4 kg/ha for T-N, 1.0 kg/ha for T-P and 213.8 kg/ha for SS. The non-point sources pollutant load in drainage water depends on rainfall and surface drainage water amount from the paddy plot. We are considering that these results were affected by rainfall as well as hydrological condition, soil management, whether or not fertilizer application, cropping, rice straw and plowing.

We study the characteristic and total flux of non-point pollutants such as total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved nutrients, total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) in the storm water runoff from urban streams and sewer outlets of Banweol Industrial Complex around Shihwa Lake. The concentrations of non-point pollutants were generally increased with increasing of the duration and intensity of rainfall. Mean TSS concentration of Ansan stream was higher than that of sewer outlets but mean concentrations of COD, TP and TN were approximately 2~5 times higher of sewer outlet than of urban stream. TSS showed statistically positive relationships with COD and TP but it had negative correlation with dissolved nutrients. There was a significant correlation between total flux of non-point pollutants in the storm water runoff and total basin area of each sewer outlet, showing that the highest runoff flux was observed at 3rd sewer outlet which represents the largest basin area from Banweol industrial complex. Total runoff fluxes for TSS, COD, TP and TN in this study were 187,536 kg, 17,118 kg, 922 kg, 13,519 kg, respectively. Given the basin area of sewer outlet in Banweol industrial complex which corresponds only 3% from total catchment area around Shihwa Lake, enormous amount of non-point pollutants will be entered into Shihwa Lake without any treatment. It is necessary to manage and reduce of various non-point sources and pollutants because the runoff of nonpoint pollutants during storm events should be deteriorating the water quality of Shihwa Lake. Our results provides useful informations on the development of best managements practices (BMPs) for effective implementation of total pollution loads management system of Shihwa Lake.
During the dry periods, many types of pollutant are accumulating on the paved surface by vehicle activities. Particularly, the highways are stormwater intensive landuses because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions from vehicles. The accumulated pollutants in highways are washed-off during a rainfall event and are highly contributing on water quality of receiving water bodies. The stormwater runoff from the highways are containing various pollutants such as metals, oil & grease and toxic chemicals originated from vehicles. Therefore, this research is performed to find pollutant characteristics in the magnitude of statistical pollutant concentrations during storm periods. During the monitoring periods, the first-flush phenomenon is visibly occurred on most storm events, which is confirmed from hydro- and pollute-graphs. The 95% confidence intervals of washed-off pollutant concentration are ranged to 154.7-257.1 mg/L for 755,138.9-197.6 mg/L for COD, 3.5-6.4 mg/L for oil & grease, 6.3-9.2 mg/L for TN and 2.3-3.31 mg/L for TP. The first flush effect is mostly occurred within initial 30 min of storm duration.

In this study, we computed the unit load of nonpoint source for the forest, agricultural, and urban representative region in Anseongchun watershed. In addition, Flow-weighted mean concentration (FWMC) that well represents runoff characteristics of storm water during rainfall, was calculated, and runoff pollutants loading was also examined. FWMCs of 1st rainfall, which runoff coefficient was high, had a tendency higher than those of 2nd rainfall. Based on landuse results, pollutant concentration of the non-urban such as forest and agricultural regions was higher than that of urban region. In case of BOD, runoff pollutants loading was calculated as 1,395, 1,623, 2,268kg/d in 1st rainfall for forest, agricultural, and urban regions, respectively, while runoff loading of 2nd rainfall was 503kg/d in forest), 512kg/d in agricultural, and 898kg/d in urban. By landuses, unit load of the urban as 72.7kg/ha/yr was 12 times higher than that of the agricultural as 6.5kg/ha/yr, and 8 times higher than that of the forest as 9.5kg/ha/yr.
Pollutant unit load developed by Ministry of Environment (MOE) in 1995 has been a tool commonly used for water quality management and environmental policy decision. In spite of the convenience of the method in application, the shortcoming of the method has been criticized especially for nonpoint source pollution from paddy field. In this paper the estimation procedures of pollutant unit load from paddy field in the major river basins (Han, Nakdong, Geum, and Youngsan river) were investigated, and some suggestions of improvement measures of the unit-load estimation were made. The investigation showed that the distributions of rainfall, run-off, and run-off ratio, which are the most important factors affecting discharge amount of pollutants, were not similar among river basins. Such differences seemed to result in a greater unit loads estimation at Han river and at Nakdong river watersheds compared to the others. Therefore, it is not likely to be rationale to compare unit load among the watersheds without consideration of such differences. We conclude that estimation of unit-load through an intensive monitoring of pollutant discharge is crucial for better estimation of unit-load. When such an intensive monitoring is not easy due to labor and expense restriction, we suggest that unit-load should be estimated based on the storm-events which is a representative rainfall-runoff event of the area.

The urban areas have various landuses such as residential, commercial, industrial and official purposes that are highly concerned with human activities. The other landuses are relating to vehicle activities, which are roads, parking lots, bridges, parks etc. The mainly using landuses by human activities are possessing three different areas that are buildings, parking lots/roads and landscapes. Of these areas, the buildings and landscapes can be classified as non-pollution areas. However, the parking lots or roads are classifying as the main pollution areas because of vehicle activities. Therefore, the landuses arising the nonpoint pollution during a storm in urban areas are roads and parking lots. The vehicles are emitting lots of nonpoint pollutants such as metals and particulate matters and it is impacting on water qualities and aqua-ecosystems nearby the city areas. Therefore, this research was conducted for characterizing the pollutant types and determining the EMCs (Event Mean Concentrations) and unit pollutant loads during a storm. The monitoring was performed on 9 locations such as highways, service area, tollgates, parking lot and bridges. All of the landuses selected for monitoring are concerned with transportation. The results can be effectively used to predict the pollutant loading before urban planning and to select the BMPs (Best Management Practices) for reducing the pollution.
Because of increased nonpoint source runoff potential at highland agricultural fields of Kangwon province, effective agricultural management practices are required to reduce the inflow of sediment and other nonpoint source pollutants into the water bodies. The watershed-scale model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), model has been used worldwide for developing effective watershed management. However, the SWAT model simulated sediment values are significantly affected by the number of subwatershed delineated. This result indicates that the SWAT estimated watershed characteristics from the watershed delineation process affects the soil erosion and sediment behaviors. However, most SWAT users do not spend time and efforts to analyze variations in sediment estimation due to watershed delineation with various threshold value although topography falsification affecting soil erosion process can be caused with watershed delineation processes. The SWAT model estimates the field slope length of Hydrologic Response Unit (HRU) based on average slope of subwatershed within the watershed. Thus the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch, developed by using the regression relationship between average watershed slope and field slope length, was utilized in this study to compare the simulated sediment from various watershed delineation scenarios. Four watershed delineation scenarios were made with various threshold values (700 ha, 300 ha, 100 ha, and 75 ha) and the SWAT estimated flow and sediment values were compared with and without applying the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch. With the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch applied, the simulated flow values are almost same irrespective of the number of subwatershed delineated while the simulated flow values changes to some extent without the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch applied. However when the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch applied, the simulated sediment values vary 9.7% to 29.8% with four watershed delineation scenarios, while the simulated sediment values vary 0.5% to 126.6% without SWAT ArcView GIS applied. As shown, the SWAT estimated flow and sediment values are not affected by the number of watershed delineation significant compared with the estimated flow and sediment value without applying the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch.

This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of pollutant loads on the water quality in the Goseong reservoir from May 2005 to October 2006. Annual total runoff at the Goseong-cheon watershed was 968.0 mm in 2005, 382.6 mm in 2006, respectively. The mean concentration of BOD, COD and SS in the stream were 2.28, 6.03, 46.97 mg/L in rainy seasons and 0.95, 2.14, 6.05 mg/L in dry seasons at SWT C sub-watershed. Total-N concentrations ranged from 2.60 to 3.18 mg/L at SWT C sub-watershed, which was generally higher than the quality standard of agricultural water (1.0 mg/L). Total-P concentrations ranged from 0.044 to 0.130 mg/L at SWT C sub-watershed. Measured pollutant loads in the SWT C sub-watershed were 36.7 kg/day of BOD, 72.3 kg/day of T-N and 2.3 kg/day of T-P in 2005 at SWT C sub-watershed, 63.9 kg/day of BOD, 82.8 kg/day of T-N and 1.1 kg/day of T-P in 2006 at SWT C sub-watershed, respectively. In the analysis of the effluent characteristics for NPS pollutants, it appeared that the loading rates of effluent from SWT C watershed were, respectively, BOD 62.3%, T-N 69.6%, T-P 71.1%, SS 70.1% during the rainy season in 2006. The calculated T-N daily pollutant loadings by the unit loading factor method from each sub-watershed were much greater than observed, but the calculated T-P daily pollutant loadings much lesser than observed.
