As most of today's automatic transmissions in passenger car adopt a electro-hydraulic control system, the role of electronically controlled solenoid valves occupies an important position and it is essential to predict solenoid transient characteristics in order to design and evaluate the performance of the hydraulic control system. However, in general, both the magnetic and electrical parameters f the solenoid system are hardly known and it is not easy to model this section with moderate complexity although mechanical system could be developed using the classical second order system. This paper presents a dynamic modelling technique of a solenoid valve, that is controlled by pulse width modulation for an automatic transmission, in terms of system identification theory. In nonlinear computer simulation, it is shown that the identified systems which produce magnetic force to input duty cycle for various excitation signals predict the static and dynamic performance very well near the operating point and in experiment conducted to confirm the validity of identification theory for PWM solenoid valve, we find that there is a good agreement between the experimental data and simulation result. Hence, this model can be utilized in the development of pressure control system with PWM solenoid valve.

The rotational behaviour of bolted extended end plate beam-to-column connections is evaluated in the context of the component method. The full moment-rotation response is characterized from the force-deformation curve of the individual joint components. The deformability of end plate connections is mostly governed by the bending of the column flange and/or end plate and tension elongation of the bolts. These components form the tension zone of the joint that can be modelled by means of "equivalent T-stubs". A systematic analytical procedure for characterization of the monotonic force-deformation behaviour of individual T-stub connections is proposed. In the framework of the component method, the T-stub is then inserted in the joint spring model to generate the moment-rotation response of the joint. The procedures are validated with the results from an experimental investigation of eight statically loaded extended end plate bolted moment connections carried out at the Delft University of Technology. Because ductility is such an important property in terms of joint performance, particularly in the partial strength joint scenario, special attention is given to this issue.
Electricity is transmitted by transmission lines from the source of production to the distribution system and then to the end users. Failure of a transmission line can lead to devastating economic losses and to negative social consequences resulting from the interruption of electricity. A comprehensive in-house numerical model that combines the data of computational fluid dynamic simulations of tornado wind fields with three dimensional nonlinear structural analysis modelling of the transmission lines (conductors and ground-wire) is used in the current study. Many codes of practice recommend neglecting the tornado forces acting on the conductors and ground-wires because of the complexity in predicting the conductors' response to such loads. As such, real transmission line systems are numerically simulated and then analyzed with and without the inclusion of the lines to assess the effect of tornado loads acting on conductors on the overall response of transmission towers. In addition, the behaviour of the conductors under the most critical tornado configuration is described. The sensitivity of the lines' behaviour to the magnitude of tornado loading, the level of initial sag, the insulator's length, and lines self-weight is investigated. Based on the current study results, a recommendation is made to consider conductors and ground-wires in the analysis and design of transmission towers under the effect of tornado wind loads.
Among the various problems involved in the structural analysis of the Korean traditional wooden structure, the analytical model for the Kong-Po is controversial subject as usual. While some experiments are tried for establishing the basis of analytical models, most of these experiments are performed using scale down specimens. So, it is not possible to apply these experimental results to structural analysis of Korean traditional wooden structure directly. A numerical study for analogizing the stiffness of full scale Kong-Po structure is performed on the basis of experimental specimen. Some parameter studies using finite element method are made in this study. The finite element analysis used in this study is geometric material nonlinear analysis. The stiffness of Kong-Po structure found out in this study can be used for modelling the joints of the Korean traditional wood structure in frame analysis.
In this paper, we introduce a new iterative method for finding a common element of the set of solutions for mixed equilibrium problem, the set of solutions of the variational inequality for a ${\beta}$inverse-strongly monotone mapping and the set of fixed points of a family of finitely nonexpansive mappings in a real Hilbert space by using the viscosity and Ces$\`{a}$ro mean approximation method. We prove that the sequence converges strongly to a common element of the above three sets under some mind conditions. Our results improve and extend the corresponding results of Kumam and Katchang [A viscosity of extragradient approximation method for finding equilibrium problems, variational inequalities and fixed point problems for nonexpansive mapping, Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, 3(2009), 475-86], Peng and Yao [Strong convergence theorems of iterative scheme based on the extragradient method for mixed equilibrium problems and fixed point problems, Mathematical and Computer Modelling, 49(2009), 1816-828], Shimizu and Takahashi [Strong convergence to common fixed points of families of nonexpansive mappings, Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 211(1) (1997), 71-83] and some authors.
This paper measures the mechanical response of precast pavement joints under moving axle loads using the finite-element method, and the models were validated with results of field tests. In order to increase the ability to use the non-linear FE analysis for design and assessment of precast pavement subjected to moving axle load, this paper investigated the effects of different load transfer between the slabs using the ABAQUS finite-element package to solve the nonlinear explicit model equations. The assembly of the panels using dowels and groove-tongue keys has been studied to assess the efficiency of keyway joint system. Concrete damage plasticity model was used to calculate the effects of permanent damages related to the failure mechanisms. With aggregate interlock as the only load transferring system, Load transfer efficiency (LTE) is not acceptable when the axle load reaches to slab joints. The Finite-element modelling (FEM) results showed that keyway joints significantly reduced tensile stresses developed at the mid-slab. Increasing the thickness of the tongue the LTE was improved but with increasing the height of the tongue the LTE was decreased. Stresses are transferred to the adjacent slab efficiently when dowels are embedded within the model. When the axle load approaches joints, tensile damage occurs sooner than compressive damage, but the damage rate remains constant, then compressive damage increases significantly and become the major form of distress under the dowels.
This paper is concerned with the design of LMI based H$_{\infty}$ controller for a line of sight(LOS) stabilization system. This system which is even linearized to analyse nonlinear characteristic has also a lot of uncertainties. In addition, the angular velocity disturbance from the vehicle's driving deteriorates the stabilized LOS, main purpose of this system. In case of fast driving, particularly, all components which are ignored and skipped to make mathematical modelling act as the uncertainties against this system. The robustness against these uncertainties has been also continuously demanded including the well tracking performance for the target. Therefore, this paper employed H$_{\infty}$ control theory to satisfy these problems and LMI method to make suitable controller with few constraints for this system. Although this system matrix doesn't have full rank, this method make it possible to design H$_{\infty}$ controller and deal with R and S matrices for reducing its order. Consequently, this paper shows that the re-analyses on the real disturbances are achieved and the proposed robust controller for them has better disturbance attenuation and tracking performance. This paper contributes the applicability of reduced order H$_{\infty}$ controller to real system by handling LMI..
We combine the physics of the ellipsoidal collapse model with the excursion set theory to study the shapes of dark matter halos. In particular, we develop an analytic approximation to the nonlinear evolution that is more accurate than the Zeldovich approximation; we introduce a planar representation of halo axis ratios, which allows a concise and intuitive description of the dynamics of collapsing regions and allows one to relate the final shape of a halo to its initial shape; we provide simple physical explanations for some empirical fitting formulae obtained from numerical studies. Comparison with simulations is challenging, as there is no agreement about how to define a non-spherical gravitationally bound object. Nevertheless, we find that our model matches the conditional minor-to-intermediate axis ratio distribution rather well, although it disagrees with the numerical results in reproducing the minor-to-major axis ratio distribution. In particular, the mass dependence of the minor-to-major axis distribution appears to be the opposite to what is found in many previous numerical studies, where low-mass halos are preferentially more spherical than high-mass halos. In our model, the high-mass halos are predicted to be more spherical, consistent with results based on a more recent and elaborate halo finding algorithm, and with observations of the mass dependence of the shapes of early-type galaxies. We suggest that some of the disagreement with some previous numerical studies may be alleviated if we consider only isolated halos.
Previous research on pounding between seismically isolated buildings during earthquakes has been focused on impacts at the bases of structures and the effect of simultaneous interactions at the bases and at the superstructures has not been studied in details. In this paper, the seismic responses of adjacent buildings supported on different or similar base systems considering impacts between bases and superstructures are numerically investigated. The study is carried out in three parts for the two types of adjacent buildings: (i) both structures have fixed bases; (ii) one structure has fixed base and the other is seismically isolated and (iii) both structures have base isolation systems. The results of the study indicate that the pounding-involved responses of the buildings depend mainly on the type of structural base systems and on the structural parameters of both buildings. For the base-isolated building, the variation of the peak accelerations and displacements of the storeys have been found to be relatively low. On the other hand, significant differences have been observed for the fixed base building. The results of the parametric study conducted for different values of the gap size between colliding structures show the reduction in the peak base displacements as the gap distance decreases.
As a brittle and heterogeneous material, concrete behaves differently under different stress conditions and its bulk strength is loading rate dependent. To a large extent, the varying behavioural properties of concrete can be explained by the mechanical failure processes at a mesoscopic level. The development of a computational mesoscale model in a general finite element environment, as presented in the preceding companion paper (Part 1), makes it possible to investigate into the underlying mechanisms governing the bulk-scale behaviour of concrete under a variety of loading conditions and to characterise the variation in quantitative terms. In this paper, we first present a series of parametric studies on the behaviour of concrete material under quasi-static compression and tension conditions. The loading-face friction effect, the possible influences of the non-homogeneity within the mortar and ITZ phases, and the effect of randomness of coarse aggregates are examined. The mesoscale model is then applied to analyze the dynamic behaviour of concrete under high rate loading conditions. The potential contribution of the mesoscopic heterogeneity towards the generally recognized rate enhancement of the material compressive strength is discussed.
