A Study on the Model of an HSDI Common-Rail Injector and the Estimation of Needle Lift (HSDI Common-Rail 인젝터 모델링 및 니들 변위 추정에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the process of the needle lift estimation ova common-rail injector fur HSDI(High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engines. A nonlinear mathematical model of dynamic behaviors of common-rail injector is established at first. Based on the mathematical model of the common-rail injector, the methodology of estimating the injector needle lift is introduced. A sliding mode observer is applied to overcome the model uncertainties. The common-rail injector model and the needle lift estimator are verified by simulations and experiments. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the model outputs are in a good agreement with experimental data, and the proposed nonlinear sliding observer can effectively estimate the needle lift.

  • Mutual information is useful for analyzing nonlinear dependence in time series in much the same way as correlation is used to characterize linear dependence. We use multivariate kernel density estimators for the estimation of mutual information at different time lags for single and multiple time series. This approach is tested on a variety of hydrologic data sets, and suggested an appropriate delay time $ au$ at which the mutual information is almost zerothen multi-dimensional phase portraits could be constructed from measurements of a single scalar time series.

  • The nonlinear estimation and the pseudo-linear estimation are used to treat the target localization in sensor network which provides range difference of arrival (RDOA) measurements. It is known that the nonlinear estimation has sensitive problem for the initial estimate and the pseudo-linear estimation has a large estimation error. The QCLS method is the typical estimator of the methods for pseudo-linear estimation. However the estimate by using the QCLS method includes the estimation error because the first stage of two estimation processes of the QCLS method causes the biased estimation error. Therefore we propose a instrumental variables(IV) method for minimizing the estimation error of the first stage. The simulation shows that the performance of the proposed method is superior to the QCLS method.

  • In industrial applications, there are disturbances and uncertainties that bring unfavorable effects to achieving the desired performance of a closed-loop system. Not surprisingly, many researchers have developed various techniques to attenuate influence of the disturbance. One intuitive idea is to design a disturbance estimator, called a disturbance observer, and cancel the effects by feedback action. This paper is a survey of disturbance observers and related methods. We categorize existing methods by design approach, applied system, and characterization of disturbance. Several disturbance observers are explained by simple examples. The readers could use this paper to help understand the configurations of representative disturbance observer methods.

Prediction Equation of Spectral Acceleration Responses in Low-to-Moderate Seismic Regions using Domestic and Overseas Earthquake Records (국내·외 계기지진 정보를 활용한 중·약진 지역의 스펙트럴 가속도 응답 예측식)

  • This study develops an empirical prediction equation of spectral acceleration responses of earthquakes which can induce structural damages. Ground motion records representing hazards of low-to-moderate seismic regions were selected and organized with several influential factors affecting the response spectra. The empirical equation and estimator coefficients for acceleration response spectra were then proposed using a robust nonlinear optimization coupled with a regression analysis. For analytical verification of the prediction equation, response spectra used for low-to-moderate seismic regions were estimated and the predicted results were comparatively evaluated with measured response spectra. As a result, the predicted shapes of response spectra can simulate the graphical shapes of measured data with high accuracy and most of predicted results are distributed inside range of correlation of variation (COV) of 30% from perfectly correlated lines.

  • In a target tracking problem the radar glint noise has non-Gaussian heavy-tailed distribution and will seriously affect the target tracking performance. In most nonlinear situations an Extended Robust Kalman Filter(ERKF) can yield acceptable performance as long as the noises are white Gaussian. However, an Extended Robust $H_{\infty}$ Filter (ERHF) can yield acceptable performance when the noises are Laplacian. In this paper, we use the Interacting Multiple Model(IMM) estimator for the problem of target tracking with glint noise. In the IMM method, two filters(ERKF and ERHF) are used in parallel to estimate the state. Computer simulations of a real target tracking shows that hybrid filter used the IMM algorithm has superior performance than a single type filter.

Air-Data Estimation for Air-Breathing Hypersonic Vehicles

  • An air-data estimator for generic air-breathing hypersonic vehicles (AHSVs) is developed and demonstrated with an example vehicle configuration. The AHSV air-data estimation strategy emphasized improvement of the angle of attack estimate accuracy to a degree necessitated by the stringent operational requirements of the air-breathing propulsion. the resulting estimation problem involves highly nonlinear diffusion process (propagation); consequently, significant distortion of a posteriori conditional density is suspected. A simulation based statistical analysis tool is developed to characterize the nonlinear diffusion process. The statistical analysis results indicate that the diffusion process preserves the symmetry and unimodality of initial probability density shape state variables, and provide the basis for applicability of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). An EKF is designed for the AHSV air-data system and the air data estimation capabilities are demonstrated.

  • In order to classify the underwater vehicles due to propeller propulsion, maximum likelihood classifier was developed. Propeller produces the cavitation and noise during its work. Cavitation-bubble makes the nonlinear medium in the water. The nonlinearity of cavitation leads to the generation of a complete spectrum of combination harmonics of the tonals of noise, and modulation of cavitation noise with propeller shaft-rates and blade-rates. The optimal estimator was derived mathematically and its capabilities were proven by simulation and real test.

Local linear regression analysis for interval-valued data

  • Interval-valued data, a type of symbolic data, is given as an interval in which the observation object is not a single value. It can also occur frequently in the process of aggregating large databases into a form that is easy to manage. Various regression methods for interval-valued data have been proposed relatively recently. In this paper, we introduce a nonparametric regression model using the kernel function and a nonlinear regression model for the interval-valued data. We also propose applying the local linear regression model, one of the nonparametric methods, to the interval-valued data. Simulations based on several distributions of the center point and the range are conducted using each of the methods presented in this paper. Various conditions confirm that the performance of the proposed local linear estimator is better than the others.

Spacecraft Attitude Estimation by Unscented Filtering (고른 필터를 이용한 인공위성의 자세 추정)

  • Spacecraft attitude estimation using the nonlinear unscented filter is addressed to fully utilize capabilities of the unscented transformation. To release significant computational load, an efficient technique is proposed by reasonably removing correlation between random variables. This modification introduces considerable reduction of sigma points and computational burden in matrix square-root calculation for most nonlinear systems. Unscented filter technique makes use of a set of sample points to predict mean and covariance. The general QUEST(QUaternion ESTimator) algorithm preserves explicitly the quaternion normalization, whereas extended Kalman filter(EKF) implicitly obeys the constraint. For spacecraft attitude estimation based on quaternion, an approach to computing quaternion means from sampled quaternions with guarantee of the quaternion norm constraint is introduced applying a constrained optimization technique. Finally, the performance of the new approach is demonstrated using a star tracker and rate-gyro measurements.
