In scanning tunneling microscopy, the piezoelectric actuator is popuilarly used in stacked type as it can provide remarkable positioning resolution and stiffness. The actuator, however, exhibits a considerable amount of hystereic nonlinearity, resulting in losses of overall measuring accuracy when a linear model is used for its control and calibration, In this study, a nonlinear model is proposed for predicting the precise relationship between the input connand voltage and the output displacement of the actuator itself, cross-coupled electrical behaviours of the driving circuit with the actuator, and mechanical characteristics of the driven components of the actuator. Finally experimental results prove that the nonlinear model enhances the measuring of scanning tunneling microscopy by an order ten in comparison with a conventional linear model.
It has been resulted that Lagrange multiplier method with statistical approach was superior to traditional harmonic balance method in identifying the nonlinear loudspeaker parameters when output signals were contaminated with Gaussian random noise. We have known that the displacement-dependent characteristic values of nonlinear parameters identified by traditional harmonic balance method were estimated less than original values by the increase of output noise and the stiffness coefficients were very sensitive to output noise. Also, by the sensitivity analysis we have verified that the harmonic distortions in acoustic radiation was mainly due to nonlinearity of force factor caused by uneven magnetic fields and that reducing the nonlinearity of damping coefficients were very effective for improving second harmonic distrotion of acoustic radiation.
This paper presents a spatial catenary cable element for the nonlinear analysis of cable-supported structures. An incremental-iterative solution based on the Newton-Raphson method is adopted for solving the equilibrium equation. As a result, the element stiffness matrix and nodal forces are determined, wherein the effect of self-weight and pretension are taken into account. In the case of the initial cable tension is given, an algorithm for form-finding of cable-supported structures is proposed to determine precisely the unstressed length of the cables. Several classical numerical examples are solved and compared with the other available numerical methods or experiment tests showing the accuracy and efficiency of the present elements.
Nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of a structure with energy dissipation devices is complicated and time consuming. In this regard the nonlinear static analysis is a practical alternative for evaluating the earthquake resisting capacity of a structure. In this study the nonlinear static response of a structure was obtained first, and the equivalent viscous modal damping ratio required to satisfy the performance objective was computed in the capacity spectrum format. Then proper amount of viscous dampers were installed to provide the required damping. Parametric study has been performed for the period of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with viscous dampers designed in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the target displacements that was used in the beginning of the design process.
A mathematical model for the nonlinear dynamics of a rotating beam with flexible root attached to a rotating hub with elastic foundation is developed. The model is developed based on the large planar and flexural deformation theory and the potential energy method to account for axial shortening due to bending deformation. In addition the exact nonlinear curvature is used in the system potential energy. The Lagrangian dynamics and the assumed mode method is used to derive the nonlinear coupled equations of motion hub rotation, beam tip deflection and hub horizontal and vertical displacements. The derived nonlinear model is simulated numerically and the results are presented and discussed for the effect of root flexibility, hub stiffness, torque type, torque period and excitation frequency and amplitude on the dynamic behavior of the rotating beam-hub and on its stability.
Imperfectly jointed interface serves as mechanical waveguide for elastic waves and gives rise to two distinct kinds of guided wave propagating along the interface. Contact acoustic nonlinearity (CAN) is known to plays major role in the generation of these interface waves called generalized Rayleigh waves in non-welded interface. Closed crack is modeled as non-welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Mathematical analysis of boundary conditions and wave equation is conducted to investigate the dispersive characteristics of the interface waves. Existence of the generalized Rayleigh wave(interface wave) in nonlinear contact interface is verified in theory where the dispersion equation for the interface wave is formulated and analyzed. It reveals that the interface waves have two distinct modes and that the phase velocity of anti-symmetric wave mode is highly dependent on contact conditions represented by linear and nonlinear dimensionless specific stiffness.
Structures of domestic nuclear power plants are designed to perform elastic behavior against beyond design earthquakes, but studies on the nonlinear behavior of structures have been insufficient since the beyond design earthquake. Accordingly, it is judged that it will be necessary to develop an evaluation method that considers the nonlinear behavioral characteristics to check the safety margin for a standard nuclear power plant structure. It is confirmed that the restoring force characteristics for each member level can be identified through the calculation formula, and the lateral stiffness for each story can also be easily calculated by JEAC 4601. In addition, as a result of applying the evaluation method of JEAC 4601 as a nonlinear restoring force model of the nuclear power plant, a certain degree of safety margin can be identified.

In the present paper, the element free Galerkin (EFG) method is developed for geometrically nonlinear analysis of deep beams considering small scale effect. To interpret the behavior of structure at the nano scale, the higher-order gradient elasticity nonlocal theory is taken into account. The radial point interpolation method with high order of continuity is used to construct the shape functions. The nonlinear equation of motion is derived using the principle of the minimization of total potential energy based on total Lagrangian approach. The Newmark method with the small time steps is used to solve the time dependent equations. At each time step, the iterative Newton-Raphson technique is applied to minimize the residential forces caused by the nonlinearity of the equations. The effects of nonlocal parameter and aspect ratio on stiffness and dynamic parameters are discussed by numerical examples. This paper furnishes a ground to develop the EFG method for large deformation analysis of structures considering small scale effects.
The electromagnetic field can cause an essential change of the dynamic behavior of the railgun. The evaluation of the dynamics performance of railgun is a mandatory task. Here, a nonlinear electromagnetic force equation of the railgun is given in which the clearance, the thickness and the width of the rail are considered. Based on it, the nonlinear electromechanical coupled dynamics equations of Euler beam rails for the railgun are proposed. Using the equations, the nonlinear free vibration frequency of the railgun is investigated and the effects of the system parameters on the frequency are analyzed. The nonlinear forced responses of the rail to the electromagnetic excitation are investigated as well. The results show that as the nonlinearity of the railgun system is considered, the vibration frequencies of the railgun system increase; as the current in the rail increases, the difference between the natural frequencies and the nonlinear vibration frequencies increases significantly; the nonlinearity of the railgun system is more obvious for smaller distance between the two rails, smaller rail thickness, and smaller stiffness of the elastic foundation; the unstable dynamics state of the rail system occurs when the armature runs to the exit of the railgun. The results are useful for design and application of the railgun system.
The purpose of this research is to study the nonlinear free vibration and post-buckling analysis of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beams resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation. Uniformly and functionally graded distributions of single walled carbon nanotubes as reinforcing phase are considered in the polymeric matrix. The modified form of rule of mixture is used to estimate the material properties of CNTRC beams. The governing equations are derived employing Euler-Bernoulli beam theory along with energy method and Hamilton's principle. Applying von $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n's$ strain-displacement assumptions, the geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration. The developed governing equations with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities are solved using variational iteration method (VIM) and the analytical expressions and numerical results are obtained for vibration and stability analysis of nanocomposite beams. The presented comparative results are indicative for the reliability, accuracy and fast convergence rate of the solution. Eventually, the effects of different parameters, such as foundation stiffness, volume fraction and distributions of carbon nanotubes, slenderness ratio, vibration amplitude, coefficients of elastic foundation and boundary conditions on the nonlinear frequencies, vibration response and post-buckling loads of FG-CNTRC beams are examined. The developed analytical solution provides direct insight into parametric studies of particular parameters of the problem.
