A nonlinear dynamic response structural optimization process is proposed for the television (TV) packing system that protects the damage from a drop situation using the equivalent static loads (ESLs). Topology optimization using ESLs is carried out for conceptual design, and shape optimization using stress ESLs for a virtual model is performed for detailed design. Stress ESLs are static loads that generate the same displacement as well as the stress fields of linear static analysis as those of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Thus, the response of nonlinear dynamic analysis can be utilized as a constraint in the linear static structural optimization. An actual example is solved to validate the process. The drop test of a television packaging system is analyzed by LS-DYNA, and NASTRAN is used for optimization.
The optimal design of the squeeze film damper (SFD) for rotor system has been studied in previous researches. However, these researches have not been considering jumping or nonlinear phenomena of a rotor system with SFD. This paper represents an optimization technique for linear and nonlinear response of a simple rotor system with SFDs by using a hybrid GA-SA algorithm which combined enhanced genetic algorithm (GA) with simulated annealing algorithm (SA). The damper design parameters are the radius, length and radial clearance of the damper. The objective function is to minimize the transmitted load between SFD and foundation at the operating and critical speeds of the rotor system with SFD which has linear and nonlinear unbalance responses. The numerical results show that the transmitted load of the SFD is greatly reduced in linear and nonlinear responses for the rotor system.
This article presents a computationally efficient framework for multi-objective seismic design optimization of steel moment-resisting frame (MRF) structures based on the nonlinear dynamic analysis procedure. This framework employs the uniform damage distribution philosophy to minimize the weight (initial cost) of the structure at different levels of damage. The preliminary framework was recently proposed by the authors based on the single excitation and the nonlinear static (pushover) analysis procedure, in which the effects of record-to-record variability as well as higher-order vibration modes were neglected. The present study investigates the reliability of the previous framework by extending the proposed algorithm using the nonlinear dynamic design procedure (optimization under multiple ground motions). Three benchmark structures, including 4-, 8-, and 12-story steel MRFs, representing the behavior of low-, mid-, and high-rise buildings, are utilized to evaluate the proposed framework. The total weight of the structure and the maximum inter-story drift ratio (IDRmax) resulting from the average response of the structure to a set of seven ground motion records are considered as two conflicting objectives for the optimization problem and are simultaneously minimized. The results of this study indicate that the optimization under several ground motions leads to almost similar outcomes in terms of optimization objectives to those are obtained from optimization under pushover analysis. However, investigation of optimal designs under a suite of 22 earthquake records reveals that the damage distribution in buildings designed by the nonlinear dynamic-based procedure is closer to the uniform distribution (desired target during the optimization process) compared to those designed according to the pushover procedure.

Optimization of the elastic joint of train is performed according to the minimization of ten responses which represent driving safety and ride comfort of train and analyzed by using the each response se surface model from stochastic design of experiments. After the each response surface model is constructed, the main effect and sensitivity analyses are successfully performed by 2nd order approximated regression model as described in this paper. We can get the optimal solutions using by nonlinear programming method such as simplex or interval optimization algorithms. The response surface models and the optimization algorithms are used together to obtain the optimal design of the elastic joint of train. the ten 2nd order polynomial response surface models of the three translational stiffness of the elastic joint (design factors) are constructed by using CCD(Central Composite Design) and the multi-objective optimization is also performed by applying min-max and distance minimization techniques of relative target deviation.

Optimization of chassis frame is performed according to the minimization of eleven responses representing one total frame weight, three natural frequencies and seven strength limits of chassis frame that are analyzed by using each response surface model from D-optimal design of experiments. After each response surface model is constructed form D-optimal design and random orthogonal array, the main effect and sensitivity analyses are successfully carried out by using this approximated regression model and the optimal solutions are obtained by using a nonlinear programming method. The response surface models and the optimization algorithms are used together to obtain the optimal design of chassis frame. The eleven-polynomial response surface models of the thirteen frame members (design factors) are constructed by using D-optimal Design and the multi-disciplinary design optimization is also performed by applying dual response analysis.

This paper deals with the optimum design solution on reduction of torque ripple for a Synchronous Reluctance Motor with concentrated winding using response surface methodology. The coupled Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) & Preisach model have been used to evaluate the nonlinear solution. Comparisons are given with characteristics of a SynRM according to the stator winding, slot number, open width of slot, slot depth, teeth width variation in concentrated winding SynRM, respectively. This paper presents an optimization procedure using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine design parameters for reducing torque ripple. RSM has been achieved to use the experimental design method in combination with finite Element Method (FEM) and well adapted to make analytical model for a complex problem considering a lot of interaction of design variables. Moreover, Sequential Quadratic Problem (SQP) method is used to solve the resulting of constrained nonlinear optimization problem.

Instead of using signal-to-noise ratio, we attempt to optimize both the mean and variance responses using dual response optimization technique. The alternative experimental strategy analyzes a robust parameter design problem to obtain the best settings that give a target condition on the mean while minimizing its variance. The mean and variance are treated as the two responses of interest to be optimized. Unlike to the crossed array and combined array approaches, our experimental setup requires replicated runs for each control factor's treatment under noise sampling. When the postulated response models are true, they enable the coefficients to be estimated and the desired performance measure to be analyzed more efficiently. The procedure and illustrative example are given for the dual response optimization techniques of nonlinear goal programming.

This study is focused on reliability based design optimization (RBDO) using moving least squares. A response surface is used to derive a limit-state equation for reliability based design optimization. Response surface method (RSM) with least square method (LSM) or Kriging will be used as a response surface. RSM is fast to make the response surface. On the other hand, RSM has disadvantage to make the response surface of nonlinear equation. Kriging can make the response surface in nonlinear equation precisely but needs considerable amount of computations. The moving least square method (MLSM) is made of both methods (RSM with LSM+Kriging). Numerical results by MLSM are compared with those by LMS in Rosenbrock function and six-hump carmel back function. The RBDO of engine duct of smart UAV is pursued in this paper. It is proved that RBDO is useful tool for aerospace structural optimal design problems.

This paper proposes a new concept of optimal governor-response power flow (OGPF) to obtain an optimal set of control parameters when the systems are in mid-term conditions after disturbances, ignoring the system dynamics. The idea of GOPF simply comes from the attempt to find an optimal solution of the governor-response power flow (GPF), which is a pre-exiting tool that is used to get power flow solutions that would exist several seconds after an event is applied. GPF incorporates the simplified model of governors in the systems into the power flow equations. This paper explains the concept of OGPF and depicts the OGPF formulation and application of a nonlinear interior point method as the solution technique. Also, this paper includes an example with New England 39-bus test system to illustrate the effectiveness of GOPF.
