In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink with vortex generator for the thermal stability is performed numerically. The optimum solutions in the heat sink are obtained when the temperature rise and the pressure drop are minimized simultaneously. Thermal performance of heat sink is influenced by the heat sink shape such as the base-part fin width, lower-part fin width, and basement thickness. To acquire the optimal design variables automatically, CFD and mathematical optimization are integrated. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method. The optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used for the constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The results show that the optimal design variables are as follows; B$_1$=2.584 mm, B$_2$=1.741 mm, and t=7.914 mm when the temperature rise is less than 40 K. Comparing with the initial design, the temperature rise is reduced by 4.2 K, while the pressure drop is increased by 9.43 Pa. The relationship between the pressure drop and the temperature rise is also presented to select the heat sink shape for the designers.
This paper presents a methodology for photovoltaic (PV) system allocation in distribution systems using a discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO). The PV allocation problem is in the category of mixed integer nonlinear programming and its formulation may include multi-valued dis-crete variables. Thus, the PSO requires a scheme to deal with multi-valued discrete variables. This paper introduces a novel multi-level quantization scheme using a sigmoid function for discrete particle swarm optimization. The technique is employed to a standard PSO architecture; the same velocity update equation as in continuous versions of PSO is used but the particle's positions are updated in an alternative manner. The set of multi-level quantization is defined as integer multiples of powers-of-two terms to efficiently approximate the sigmoid function in transforming a particle's position into discrete values. A comparison with a genetic algorithm (GA) is performed to verify the quality of the solutions obtained.

Buildings are mostly under part load conditions causing an inefficient system operation in terms of energy consumption. It is critical to operate building air-conditioning system with a scientific or optimal manner which minimizes energy consumption and maintains thermal comfort by matching building sensible and latent loads. Little research has been performed in developing general methodologies for the optimal operation of air-conditioning system. Based on this research motivation, system simulation program was developed by adopting various equipment operating strategies which are energy efficient especially for humidity control in summer. A numerical optimization technique was utilized to search optimal solution for multi-independent variables and then linked to the developed system simulation model within a mam program. The main goal of the study is to provide a systematic framework and guideline for the optimal operation of air-conditioning system focusing on air-side. For given cooling loads and ambient outdoor conditions the optimal operating strategies of a commercial building are determined by minimizing a constrained objective function by a nonlinear programming technique. Desired space setpoint conditions were found through evaluating the trade-offs between comfort and system power consumption. The results show that supply airflow rate and compressor fraction play main roles in the optimization process. It was found that variable setpoint optimization technique could produce lower indoor humidity level demanding less power consumption which will be benefits for building applications of humidity problem.

Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Therefore, many researchers have used a surrogate model that has a regression model performed on a data sampling of the simulation. In general, metamodels(surrogate model) take the form y($\chi$)=f($\chi$)+$\varepsilon$, where y($\chi$) is the true output, f($\chi$) is the metamodel output, and is the error. In this paper, a second order polynomial equation is used as the RSM(response surface model) for high speed train that have twenty-nine design variables and forty-six responses. After the RSM is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using a nonlinear programming method called VMM(variable matric method) This paper shows that the RSM is a very efficient model to solve the complex optimization problem.

When Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO) methods are used, deterministic optimum designs are frequently pushed to the design constraint boundary, leaving little or no room for tolerances (or uncertainties) in design, manufacture, and operating processes. In the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) model for robust system design, the mean values of uncertain system variables are usually used as design variables, and the cost is optimized subject to prescribed probabilistic constraints as defined by a nonlinear mathematical programming problem. Therefore, a RBDO solution that reduces the structural weight in uncritical regions does not only provide an improved design but also a higher level of confidence in the design. In this work, we seek to improve the quality of RBDO processes using efficient optimization techniques with object of improving the resulting objective function and satisfying the required constraints. Our recent RBDO developments show its efficiency and applicability in this context. So we present some recent structural engineering applications demonstrate the efficiency of these developed RBDO methods.

A computer-aided design system of involute cylindrical gears(spur and helical gears) for power transmission is developed, in which the volume of a gear unit is minimized with satisfying various design constraints. As the design constraints, bending strength and pitting resistance of AGMA 218.01, scoring of Dudley's flash temperature, contact ratio, and involute interference of pinion are considered and effective factors for strength calculation(life, reliability, hardness ratio, load distribution, velocity, etc.) are also included. This complicated nonlinear optimization problem is solved by using ALM(Augmented-Lagrange-Multiplier) method with self scaling BFGS(Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) method employed for unconstrained optimization programming. This design method can be easily applied to designing power transmission gear unit in the machines of various kinds. It is expected for the proposed method to be a contribution for an automated design of gear unit towards weight minimization, miniaturization and high strength of gear unit.

This paper proposes an analytical method of evaluating the maximum error by modeling the exact tool path for the tool traverse singular region in five-axis machining. It is known that the NC data from the inverse kinematics transformation of 5-axis machining can generate singular positions where incoherent movements of the rotary axes can appear. These lead to unexpected errors and abrupt operations, resulting in scoring on the machined surface. To resolve this problem, previous methods have calculated several tool positions during a singular operation, using inverse kinematics equations to predict tool trajectory and approximate the maximum error. This type of numerical approach, configuring the tool trajectory, requires much computation time to obtain a sufficient number of tool positions in a region. We have derived an analytical equation for the tool trajectory in a singular area by modeling the tool operation into a linear and a nonlinear part that is a general form of the tool trajectory in the singular area and that is suitable for all types of five-axis machine tools. In addition, we have evaluated the maximum tool-path error exactly, using our analytical model. Our algorithm can be used to modify NC data, making the operation smoother and bringing any errors to within tolerance.
Optimization of a heat exchanger with internally finned circular tubes has been performed for three-dimensional periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. The design variables of fin number N, fin width ($d_1,d_2$) and fin height(H), are numerically optimized for the limiting conditions of $N=22{\sim}37$, $d_1=0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm, $d_2=0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm, $H=0.1{\sim}1.5$. Due to the periodic boundary conditions along main flow direction, the three layers of meshes are considered. The CFD and the mathematical optimization are coupled to optimize the heat exchanger. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem.

This paper presents optimal operational scheduling model and economic assessment of Li-ion battery energy storage systems installed in non-residential customers. The operation schedule of a BESS is determined to minimize electric bill, which is composed of demand and energy charges. Dynamic programming is introduced to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. Based on the optimal operation schedule result, the economics of a BESS are evaluated in the investor and the social perspective respectively. Calculated benefits in the investor or customer perspective are the savings of demand charge, energy charge, and related taxes. The social benefits include fuel cost savings of generating units, construction deferral effects of the generation capacity and T&D infra, and incremental CO2 emission cost impacts, etc. Case studies are applied to an large industrial customer that shows similarly repeated load patterns according to days of the week.

Analyses of flow and heat transfer characteristics and shape optimization of internally finned circular tubes have been performed for three-dimensional periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. CFD and mathematical optimization are coupled in order to optimize the shape of heat exchanger. The design variables such as fin widths $(d_{1},\;d_{2})$ and fin height (h) are numerically optimized by minimizing the pressure loss and maximizing the heat transfer rate for limiting conditions of $d_{1}=0.2\~1.5\;mm,\;d_{2}=0.2\~1.5\;mm,$ and $h=0.2\~1.5mm$. Due to the periodic boundary conditions along main flow direction, the three layers of meshes are considered. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem.
