  • Third-order shear deformation theory is reformulated using the nonlocal elasticity of Eringen. The equation of equilibrium of the nonlocal elasticity are derived. This theory has ability to capture the both small scale effects and quadratic variation of shear strain through the plate thickness. Navier's method has been used to solve the governing equations for all edges simply supported boundary conditions. Analytical solutions of buckling of nano-scale plates are presented using this theory to illustrate the effect of nonlocal theory on buckling load of the nano-scale plates. The relations between nonlocal third-order and local theories are discussed by numerical results. Further, effects of (i) length (ii) nonlocal parameter, (iii) aspect ratio and (iv) mode number on nondimensional buckling load are studied. In order to validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are used and discussed. The present results of nano-scale plates using the nonlocal theory can provide a useful benchmark to check the accuracy of related numerical solutions.

  • Zero plane displacement (d) is the elevated height of the apparent momentum sink exerted by the vegetation on the air. For a vegetative canopy, d depends on the roughness structure of a plant canopy such as leaf area index, canopy height and canopy density, and thus is critical for the analysis of canopy turbulence and the calculation of surface scalar fluxes. In this research note, we estimated d at the Gwangneung coniferous forest by employing two independent methods of Rotach (1994) and Martano (2000), which require only a single-level eddy-covariance measurement. In general, these two methods provided comparable estimates of $d/h_c$ (where $h_c$ is the canopy height, i.e., ~23m), which ranged from 0.51 to 0.97 depending on wind directions. These estimates of $d/h_c$ were within the ranges (i.e., 0.64~0.94) reported from other forests in the literature but were sensitive to the forms of the nondimensional functions for atmospheric stability. Our finding indicates that one should be careful in interepreation of zero plane displacement estimated from a single-level eddy covariance measurement that is conductaed within the roughness sublayer.

  • The natural frequencies of Al square plates with a brass inclusion were analyzed by the rule of mixtures. The rule of mixtures is the method to derive natural frequency mutiplying effective inplane wane speed and nondimensional frequency parameters. Numerical models were Al square plates with an inclusion with cantilever type, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type, 3 clamped edge-1 free edge type and fully clamped edge type. In cantilever type plates, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type plates and 3 clamped edge-1 free edge plates with an inclusion, good agreement within 10% obtained from rule of mixtures' results and numerical analysis results within inclusion area ratio 1/9. It was found that the natural frequencies of the cantilever type, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type and 3 clamped edge-1 free edge type plates with an inclusion decrease as the size of inclusion increases when inclusion is located center of plates. And when the density of inclusion is less than the plates, natural frequency of plates with an inclusion increases as the size of inclusion increases.

  • For the design of composite breakwater as representative one of the coastal and harbor structures, it has been widely discussed by the researchers about the relation between the behavior of excess-pore-water pressure inside the rubble mound and seabed caused by the wave load and its structural failure. Recently, the researchers have tried to verify its relation through the numerical simulation technique. The above researches through numerical simulation have been mostly applied by the linear and nonlinear analytic methods, but there have been no researches through the numerical simulation by the strongly nonlinear mutiphase flow analytical method considering wave-breaking phenomena by VOF method and turbulence model by LES method yet. In the preceding research of this study, olaFlow model based on the mutiphase flow analytical method was applied to the nonlinear interaction analysis of regular wave-composite breakwater-seabed. Also, the same numerical techniques as preceding research are utilized for the analysis of irregular wave-composite breakwater-seabed in this study. Through this paper, it is investigated about the horizontal wave pressures, the time variations of excess-pore-water pressure and their frequency spectra, mean flow velocities, mean vorticities, mean turbulent kinetic energies and etc. around the caisson, rubble mound of the composite breakwater and seabed according to the changes of significant wave height and period. From these results, it was found that maximum nondimensional excess-pore water pressure, mean turbulent kinetic energy and mean vorticity come to be large equally on the horizontal plane in front of rubble mound, circulation of inflow around still water level and outflow around seabed is formed in front of rubble caisson.
