  • This paper introduces an active sensing node using radio-frequency (RF) telemetry. This device has brought the traditional impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technique to a new paradigm. The RF active sensing node consists of a miniaturized impedance measuring device (AD5933), a microcontroller (ATmega128L), and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (XBee). A macro-fiber composite (MFC) patch interrogates a host structure by using a self-sensing technique of the miniaturized impedance measuring device. All the process including structural interrogation, data acquisition, signal processing, and damage diagnostic is being performed at the sensor location by the microcontroller. The RF transmitter is used to communicate the current status of the host structure. The feasibility of the proposed SHM strategy is verified through an experimental study inspecting loose bolts in a bolt-jointed aluminum structure.

  • A crack which is axially oriented with small size is hard to detect in conventional system. CMFL(Circumferential Magnetic Flux Leakage) type PIG(Pipelines Inspection Gauge) in the NDT(Nondestructive Testing), is operated to detect this defect called axially oriented cracks in the pipe. It is necessary to decompose the size and shapes of cracks for the maintenance of underground pipelines. This article is mainly focused on the decomposing method of the size and shape of the axially oriented cracks by using inspection signal data for defect.

  • Recently, the construction of road, subway, railroad, and microtunnel for electricity supplement have been increased because of increasement of traffic in urban area, increasement of industrial transportation, and the network between cities in Korea. The deterioration of tunnel structure may occur by various internal and external factors and particularly, tunnel structures tend to contact with either underground water or harmful ions. Therefore, leakage sometimes occurred through the cracks and joints of concrete lining. The leakage in tunnel may affect the durability of concrete lining. In this study, to evaluate the durability and deterioration of concrete lining in tunnel structures, we were performed the various experiments for compressive strength. Compressive strength obtained from nondestructive inspection and compressive strength test varies according to the concrete lining conditions.

  • We have developed a laser ultrasonic system for visualization of elastic waves propagating on a solid surface, in order to visualize ultrasonic waves propagating on opaque media. This system can produce a series of successive images as an animation of wave propagation, because of scanning an optical heterodyne probe to measure surface transient displacements. Using this visualization technique, we observed the scattering and diffraction of ultrasonic waves around various shapes of artificial defects, and examined its application to nondestructive inspection. This imaging system provides various kinds of visualization images such as propagation image, amplitude image, arrival time image and velocity image. We have been confident that this technique is available for nondestructive inspection and materials ...

  • The recognition of such natural wave guides as plates, rods, hollow cylinders, multi-layer structures or simply an interface between two materials combined with an increased understanding of the physics and wave mechanics of guided wave propagation has led to a significant increase in the number of guided wave inspection applications being developed each year. Of primary attention Is the ability to inspect partially hidden structures, hard to access areas, and teated or insulated structures. An introduction to some physical consideration of guided waves followed by some sample problem descriptions in pipe, ice detection, fouling detection in the foods industry, aircraft, tar coated structures and acoustic microscopy is presented in this paper. A sample problem in Boundary Element Modeling is also presented to illustrate the move in guided wave analysis beyond detection and location analysis to quantification.

  • NDE(Nondestructive examination) detects a flaw or discontinuity in materials. Flaws detected by the pre-service or in-service examinations shall be sized for the purpose of analysis and repair. A flaw that is initiated from the surface is difficult to determine its depth by NDE. The depth of the surface flaw can be measured using an ultrasonic diffracted wave. To find the optimum standard for ultrasonic parameter(For example, frequency & size of transducer), a mock-up test and simulation were established and studied. This inspection technology may show the depth sizing possibility of the flaw down to nearly two(2) mm.

  • The non-destructive tests are widely used to predict the strength of existing structures. The purpose of the present study is to propose the prediction equations for strength evaluation of concrete structures. The present study focuses on the rebound method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method for quartzite aggregate concrete. The major test variables include the water-cement ratio and curing methods. The water-cement ratio are 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, respectively and the curing method covers ail-dry condition and standard curing condition. The prediction equations for strength of concrete are proposed from the present test data.

  • KS-code(KS B 0896) for nondestructive ultrasonic testing judge the quality level by ratio of flaw size to plate thickness only. But stress distributions using finite element analysis show that location of the flaws are more important than the flaw size. So, KS-code should take into account of flaw location for judging the quality level of welded steel structures.

  • The 3-dimensional measuring machine by using an ultrasonic sensor is used one of the NDE(Nondestructive Examination). It is applied to the inspection of pipelines, boreholes, pressure vessel and tank, and so on. In particular when a harsh environment prohibits the use of moving mechanical parts. The 3-dimensional measuring machine by using an ultrasonic sensor, which measure 1-dimensional information and 2-dimensional information simultaneously from a target of inspection, and then reembody 3-dimensional information. So we can find the situation in progress and predict remaining life and corrosion without destructive examination. It's a point of excellence that the 3-dimensional measuring machine is portable.
