  • This paper presents the idea of a smart load that can adjust the input power flow based on the intermittent power available from RESs (Renewable Energy Resources) to regulate the line voltage, and draw a constant power from the grid. To this effect, an innovative power flow controller is presented based on a Resistive ES (Electric Spring) in combination with a PEAT (Power Electronics based Adjustable Transformer), which can effectively shape the load power flow at the subnetwork level. With a PEAT incorporated in the step down transformer at the grid side, the proposed controller can supply non-critical loads through local RESs, and the critical loads can draw a relatively constant power from the grid. If there is an abundance of power produced by the RESs, the controller can supply both non-critical loads and critical loads through the RES, which significantly reduces the power demand from the grid. The principle, practicality, stability analysis, and controller design are presented. In addition, simulation results show that the power flow controller performs well in shaping the load power flow at the subnetwork level, which decreases the power demand on the grid. Experimental results are also provided to show that the controller can be realized.

  • The reduction of noise from wind turbines has been studied using various methods. Some examples include controlling wind turbine blades, designing low-noise-emitting wind turbine blades, and using trailing-edge serrations. Among these methods, serration is considered an effective noise reduction method. Various studies have aimed to understand the effects of trailing-edge serration parameters. Most studies, however, have focused on fixed-wing concepts, and few have analyzed noise reduction or developed a prediction method for rotor-type blades. Herein, a noise prediction method, composed of two noise prediction methods for a wind turbine with trailing-edge serrations, is proposed. From the flow information obtained by an in-house program (WINFAS), the noise from non-serrated blades is calculated by turbulent ingestion noise and airfoil self-noise prediction methods. The degree of noise reduction caused by the trailing-edge serrations is predicted in the frequency domain by Lyu's method. The amount of noise reduction is subtracted from the predicted result of the non-serrated blade and the total reduction of the noise from the rotor blades is calculated.

  • A family of non-isolated DC-DC three-port converters (TPCs) that allows for a more flexible power flow among a renewable energy source, an energy storage device and a current-reversible DC bus is introduced. Most of the reported non-isolated topologies in this area consider only a power consuming load. However, for applications such as hybrid-electric vehicle braking systems and DC microgrids, the load power generating capability should also be considered. The proposed three-port family consists of one unidirectional port and two bi-directional ports. Hence, they are well-suited for photovoltaic (PV)-battery-DC bus systems from the power flow viewpoint. Three-port converters are derived by combining different commonly known power converters in an integrated manner while considering the voltage polarity, voltage levels among the ports and the overall voltage conversion ratio. The derived converter topologies are able to allow for seven different modes of operation among the sources and load. A three-port converter which integrates a boost converter with a buck converter is used as a design example. Extensions of these topologies by combining the soft-switching technique with the proposed design example are also presented. Experiment results are given to verify the proposed three-port converter family and its analysis.

  • The input emergy of an advanced treatment plant for reducing the 1 kg of TN and TP was estimated 4.14E+14 sej/kg, 5.02E+15 sej/kg, respectively. In addition, the input emergy of constructed wetland for reduction of the 1 kg of TN and TP reduction was estimated to be 2.48E+14 sej/kg, 3.38E+15 sej/kg, respectively. The cost reducing 1 kg of TN and TP for an advanced treatment plant was estimated 197,466 won and 2,388,739 won respectively and constructed wetland was estimated 117,976 won and 1,609,213 won respectively. As a result, All of the emergy source of constructed wetland for reducing non-point source is renewable resource. If we use the constructed wetland, it results in enhancing economic value by reducing of non-point pollution, controlling a flood and providing the habitat of animals or plants. Improving water quality program in the Nakdong River Basin should be changed into an ecological treatment facilities from expansion of the sewage treatment facilities and advanced treatment plant using high cost and non-renewable energies.

  • In order to study the utilization of seaweeds as an alternative renewable feedstock for bioethanol production, their properties of hydrolysis and fermentation were investigated. The seaweeds were well hydrolyzed with diluted sulfuric acid. The weight loss of seaweeds reached 75-90%, but only 12-51% of them was converted into reducing sugars after the acid-hydrolysis at $130^{\circ}C$ for 4-6h. The yield of reducing sugars increased with increasing the hydrolysis time up to 4h and then decreased thereafter. In contrast, the ethanol yield from the hydrolysates increased with hydrolysis time except for green seaweeds maximizing at 4h. Optimal fermentation time by Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ATCC 24858) varied with seaweeds; 48h for green seaweeds, 96h for brown and red seaweeds. The ethanol yield from the hydrolysate reached 138${\pm}$37mg/g-dry for green seaweeds, 258${\pm}$29mg/g-dry for brown seaweeds, and 343${\pm}$53mg/g-dry for red seaweeds, which correspond to approximately 1.5-4.0 times more than the theoretical yield from total reducing sugars in the hydrolysates. The results obtained indicate clearly that the non-reducing sugars or oligosaccharides dissolved in the hydrolysate played an important role in producing bioethanol. Considering the productivity and production cost of each seaweed, brown seaweeds such as Laminaria japonica and Undaria pinnatifida seem to be a promissing feedstock for bioethanol production.

  • Recently, the fossil energy and its related environmental problems (increase in PPM of $CO_2$) have been increased. Therefore, the interests on new and renewable energy have been increased as the one of the future industrial leading items. Among the renewable energy, the PV (Photo-Volatic) systems has particular merit at the electricity can be directly acquired from the sun. Usually in PV systems, the ambient temperature and air velocity have strongly related on the effect of power generation of PV panel. So the purpose of this study is to clarify relationships between power generation of PV panel and outer environmental factors like temperature and air velocity. And these types of applications using natural energy are strongly affected by the climate conditions. Therefore the data of this study were re-arranged in terms of non-dimensional correlations.

  • The duck-rice forming system is increasingly spread up throughout Korea since 1992. It is discussed the rice field, rice quality, weed and pest management in the duck-rice weeding system compared to conventional farming system. Moreover the optimizing duck population, system management and fertilizer application rate were reported. Energy input and output by duck-rice farming system were carefully compared with those of low input sustainable paddy field and conventional farming paddy field. To find out the environmentally sound function of duck-rice system, the total nitrogen in paddy soil and paddy water, and nitrogen cycle in paddy rice cultivation system were analysed. finally the input and output were calculated, and ecological characteristic were determined in terms of nitrogen balance, labor input, animal input, renewable energy input, turnover of soil organic matter, energy loss, non-renewable indirect and direct energy input. It was concluded duck-rice weeding system could be recommended in terms of net only environmentally sound, but also farmer's income. But there are still some research needs for successful adaption of duck-rice farming to investigate to determine the optimal population of duck in rice paddy field unit, release time of duckling, duck management after release, and strategy for duck marketing and duck processing.

  • In recent years, there has been a tendency towards renewable energy sources considering the damages caused by non-renewable energy resources to nature and humans. One of the renewable energy sources is wind and energy is obtained with the help of wind turbines. To determine the behavior of wind turbines under earthquake loads, dynamic characteristics are required. In this study, the differential transformation method is proposed to determine the free vibration analysis of wind turbines with a variable cross-section. The wind turbine is modeled as an equivalent variable continuous flexural beam and blade weight is considered as a point mass at the top of the structures. The differential equation representing the free vibration of the wind turbine is transformed into an algebraic equation with the help of differential transformation method and the angular frequencies and the mode shapes of the wind turbine are obtained by the help of the differential transformation method. In the study, a sample taken from the literature was solved with the presented method and the suitability of the method was investigated. The same wind turbine example also modeled by finite element modelling software, ABAQUS. Results of the finite element model and differential transformation method are compared with each other and the results are in good agreement.

  • Renewable energy is not a new terminology. One of the fastest growing renewable energies is solar energy. The implementation of solar energy provides several advantages including the reduction of some of the environmental risks of fossil fuel consumption. This research elaborated the importance of the adaption of solar energy by developing a spatial decision support system (SDSS), while the Residential Solar Energy Adoption (RSEA) is an instantiation artifact in the form of an SDSS. As a GIS web-based application, RSEA allows stakeholders (e.g., utility companies, policymakers, service providers homeowners, and researchers) to navigate through locations on a map interactively. The maps highlight locations with high and low solar energy adoption potential that enables decision-makers (e.g., policymakers, solar firms, utility companies, and nonprofit organizations) to make decisions. A combined qualitative and quantitative methodological approach was used to evaluate the application's usability and user experience, and results affirmed the ability of the factors of utility, usefulness, and a positive user experience of the residential solar energy adoption of spatial decision support system (RSEA-SDSS). RSEA-SDSS in improving the decision-making process for potential various stakeholders, in utility, solar installations, policy making, and non-profit renewable energy domains.

  • BIPV or BAPV installation applied to building is increasing through public utility mandates enterprise. Solar PV energy generates only during the day, but if it is operated in convergence with ESS, which stores electrical energy, it can restrain the fossil energy used in buildings throughout the day. A solution is to converge with PV system and ESS. However, PV systems and ESS connected to the power grid in parallel can cause problems of electrical stability. A study was conducted on the case of failure to detect islanding operation under the parallel operation of PV generation and ESS that are connected in parallel to power grid. Experiments conducted various non-islanding detections under the operating conditions. In the experiment results, when one PCS - PV inverter or ESS inverter - was operating under the islanding condition, it stopped working within 0.5 seconds of the Korean grid standard. However, when both of PV inverter and ESS inverter were operating at the same time under the islanding situation, the anti-islanding algorithm did not operate normally and both inverters continuously supplied power to the connected RLC loads. islanding detection Algorithm developed by each inverter manufacturer has caused this phenomenon. Therefore, this paper presented a new test standard for islanding detection.
