  • This paper presents the optimal permanent magnet shape on the rotor of an interior permanent magnet motor to reduce the core losses and improve the performance. As permanent magnet has conductivity inherently, it causes huge amount of eddy current losses by the slot harmonics with concentrated winding. This loss is roughly 100 times larger than that of distributed winding in high speed operation and it cannot be ignored, especially on traction motors. Each eddy current loss on permanent magnet has been investigated in detail by using FEM(Finite Element Method) instead of EMCNM(Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method) in order to consider saturation and non-linear magnetic property. Simulation-based DOE(Design Of Experiment) is also applied to avoid large number of analyses according to each design parameter and consider expected interactions among parameters. Consequently, the optimal design to reduce the core loss on the permanent magnet while maintaining or improving motor performance is proposed by an optimization algorithm using regression equation derived and lastly, the core loss reduction on the proposed shape of the permanent magnet is verified by FEM.

  • Porphyrins generally bind DNA in two different ways with respect to the mixing ratio; monomeric binding at a low mixing ratio and outside stacking at a high mixing ratio. In the present study, CTDNA binding property of a planar structured porphyrin, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-methyl-4-pyridin-4-yl-phenyl)porphyrin (referred to as B-TMPyP) was investigated using absorption, CD, LD, and $LD^r$ spectroscopies. B-TMPyP produced a bisignate CD band, even at the lowest mixing ratio, indicating that B-TMPyP may not have a monomeric binding mode. From the observations of the spectral changes to the absorption, CD, and LD spectra in mixing ratio dependent titrations, B-TMPyP seems to have a quite different stacking type compared to that for the binding of $H_2$TMPyP. Moreover, B-TMPyP produced a CD band of opposite shape in the Soret band region. A qualitative explanation for the observed optical differences is also given.

  • This paper presents free vibration analysis method using the characteristics of the rotationally periodic structures and includes the analysis results of a tire as an example. The normal modes of the rotationally periodic structures are the kind of standing waves, so all sectors have the same deflection shapes, and only different phases. This property makes it possible to derive the analysis method called sector method. The sector method can give the accurate natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the rotationally periodic structure with information of only one sector. When the free vibration analysis is performed to find the dynamic characteristics of the rotationally periodic structure by using the sector method, the computer memory spaces and the CPU times can be saved. We obtained much economic benefits by using the sector method in the analysis of dynamic characteristics of a tire made of non-linear materials.

  • In this paper, a WLED communication system with SC-FDMA technique is proposed. OFDM is a promising technique to realize high-speed WLED communication system. However, because of the PAPR, the system performance can be significantly compromised by non-linear distortions in the transmission chain. Furthermore, the overload current due to peak signal power lead the WLED equipment over bright which is harmful to equipment life and human‘s eye. The novel WLED communication system proposed in this paper solved these problems by using SC-FDMA technique which has an inherent low PAPR property. The severity of PAPR performances expressed by CCDF curve and the BER performances under different modulation schemes are analyzed in this paper.

  • In MRI, an image contrast can be developed as a result of the susceptibility effect if an object has paramagnetic substances. This is mainly due to the non-uniform phase distribution or linear gradient developed by the magnetic susceptibility within a voxel, which in turn reduces the signal intensity; e.g., spin phases are dephased and thereby cancel each other resulting in a reduced signal. In this paper, a new concept for manipulating the susceptibility effect through the use of tailored RF pulses is proposed. As potential applications of the method, two different types of tailored RF pulses are introduced: one for susceptibility artifact correction and the other for contrast enhancement. The latter, for example, can be applied to angiography utilizing the paramagnetic property of deoxygenated blood. Both a theoretical study of the method and experimental results are reported.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic effect of pipeline installation and embedment for the on-bottom stability design of offshore pipelines on soft clay. On-bottom stability analysis of offshore pipelines on soft clay by DNV-RP-F109 (DNV, 2010) results in very unreasonable pipe embedment and concrete coating thickness. Thus, a new procedure of the on-bottom stability analysis was established considering dynamic effects of pipeline installation and pipe-soil interaction at touchdown point (TDP). This analysis procedure is composed of three steps: global pipeline installation analysis, local analysis at TDP, modified on-bottom stability analysis using DNV-RP-F109. Data obtained from the dynamic pipeline installation analysis were utilized for the finite element analysis (FEA) of the pipeline embedment using the non-linear soil property. From the analysis results of the proposed procedure, an optimum design of on-bottom stability of offshore pipeline on soft clay can be achieved. This procedure and result will be useful to assess the on-bottom stability analysis of offshore pipelines on soft clay. The analysis results were justified by an offshore field inspection.

  • In this paper, a distance measuring system using a PSD sensor in proposed, which in suitable for low-cost localization sensor of a mobile robot. Because the distance-voltage output of PSD sensor has a non-linear property, the linearizing function is proposed through the experimental characteristics of the sensor. And the characteristics are tested and the distance-voltage data are measured in various colors and materials of object. The parameters of the proposed function are extracted by using the measured data. Finally, the performance and the accuracy of the developed system are verified according to the comparison of the distance by the proposed function with the real distance.

  • Novel characterization of thermal properties of a battery has been introduced by defining its frequency-dependent thermal impedance function. Thermal impedance function can be approximated as a thermal impedance spectrum by analyzing experimental temperature transient which is related to the thermal impedance function through Laplace transformation. In order to obtain temperature transient, a process has been devised to generate external heat pulse with heating wire and to measure the response of battery. This process is used to study several commercial Li-ion batteries of cylindrical type. The thermal impedance measurements have been performed using potentionstat/galvanostate controlled digital signal processor, which is more commonly available than flow-meter usually applied for thermal property measurements. Thermal impedance spectra obtained for batteries produced by different manufactures are found to differ considerably. Comparison of spectra at different states of charge indicates independence of thermal impedance on charging state of battery. It is shown that thermal impedance spectrum can be used to obtain simultaneously thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of battery by non-linear complex least-square fit of the spectrum to thermal impedance model. Obtained data is used to simulate a response of the battery to internal heating during discharge. It is found that temperature inside the battery is by one-third larger that on its surface. This observation has to be considered to prevent damage by overheating.

  • Semiconductive property of the passivating $TiO_2$ film was investigated by measuring the impedance of passivated titanium electrode in a 0.1 N NaOH solution. The passive film was prepared galvanostatically with $10mA/cm^2$ at formation potential of 50 V in a 1 N $H_2SO_4$ solution. The impedance measurement was conducted by superimposing an ac voltage of 5 m V amplitude with the frequency ranging from 5 to 10000 Hz on a dc bias (applied potential). The donor distribution in the film was depicted from the analysis of the non-linear slope of Mott-Schottky plot. The region with nearly constant concentration of donors near the electrolyte/film interface amounts at about 60 percent of the total film thickness and donor concentration increases largely with distance from the surface in an inner region near the film/metal interface. In a region of the film/metal interface the donor concentration showed a frequency dependence greater than in a region of the electrolyte/film interface. The result of donor concentration against frequency suggests a transition from crystalline to amorphous state with distance from the electrolyte/film interface in the passivating $TiO_2$ films. This is also confirmed by the ac conductivity measurement.

  • The differential settlements and rotations among footings cannot be avoided when the frame-footing-soil system is subjected to seismic/dynamic loading. Also, there may be a situation where column(s) of a building are located near adjoining property line causes eccentric loading on foundation system. The strap beams may be provided to control the rotation of the footings within permissible limits caused due to such eccentric loading. In the present work, the seismic interaction analysis of a three-bay three-storey, space frame-footing-strap beam-soil system is carried out to investigate the interaction behavior using finite element software (ANSYS). The RCC structure and their foundation are assumed to behave in linear manner while the supporting soil mass is treated as nonlinear elastic material. The seismic interaction analyses of space frame-isolated footing-soil and space frame-strap footing-soil systems are carried out to evaluate the forces in the columns. The results indicate that the bending moments of very high magnitude are induced at column bases resting on eccentric footing of frame-isolated footing-soil interaction system. However, use of strap beams controls these moments quite effectively. The soil-structure interaction effect causes significant redistribution of column forces compared to non-interaction analysis. The axial forces in the columns are distributed more uniformly when the interaction effects are considered in the analysis.
