  • This paper deals with delamination analysis of non-linear viscoelastic multilayered beam subjected to bending in the plane of the layers. For this purpose, first, a non-linear viscoelastic model is presented. In order to take into account the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour, a non-linear spring and a non-linear dashpot are assembled in series with a linear spring connected in parallel to a linear dashpot. The behaviours of the non-linear spring and dashpot are described by applying non-linear stress-strain and stress-rate of strain relationships, respectively. The constitutive law of the model is derived. Due to the non-linear spring and dashpot, the constitutive law is non-linear. This law is used for describing the time-dependent mechanical behaviour of the beam under consideration. The material properties involved in the constitutive law vary along the beam length due to the continuous material inhomogeneity of the layers. Solution of the strain energy release rate for the delamination is obtained by analyzing the balance of the energy with considering of the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour. The strain energy release rate is found also by using the complementary strain energy for verification. A parametric study is carried-out by using the solution obtained. The solutions derived and the results obtained help to understand the time-dependent delamination of non-linear viscoelastic beams under loading in the plane of layers.

  • Rubber compounds have high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate. In this study, die swell of rubber compounds at the capillary die have been investigated through an experiment and computer simulation. They have been performed using fluidity tester in experiment and commercial CFD code, Polyflow in computer simulation. Die swell of rubber compounds for relaxation time at several modes under same conditions with the experiment were predicted using non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) model. The simulation was analyzed compared with the experiment. Viscoelastic behaviors for pressure, velocity and shear rate distribution were analyzed at the capillary die. It is concluded that the PTT model successfully represented the amount of the optimal die swell of rubber compounds for relaxation time at different modes.

  • Three kinds of viscoelastic damper model, which has a non-linear spring as an element is studied analytically and numerically. The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. The motion is governed by a non-linear constitutive equation and an additional equation of motion. Harmonic balance method is applied to get analytic solutions of the system. The frequency-response curves show that multiple solutions co-exist and that the jump phenomena can occur. In addition, it is shown that separate solution branch exists and that it can merge with the primary response curve. Saddle-node bifurcation sets explain the occurrences of such non-linear phenomena.

  • A five parameter viscoelastic model is developed to study harmonic waves propagating in the non-homogeneous viscoelastic filaments of varying density. The constitutive relation for five parameter model is first developed and then it is applied for harmonic waves in the specimen. In this study, it is assumed that density, rigidity and viscosity of the specimen i.e., rod are space dependent. The specimen is non-homogeneous, initially unstressed and at rest. The method of non-linear partial differential equation has been used for finding the dispersion equation of harmonic waves in the rods. A simple method is presented for reflections at the free end of the finite non-homogeneous viscoelastic rods. The harmonic wave propagation in viscoelastic rod is also presented numerically with MATLAB.

The behavior of the damper model shows non-linear hysteresis curves which is qualitatively similar to those of real viscoelastic materials. • In this study, the vibration of an electrostatically actuated micro cantilever beam is analyzed in which a viscoelastic layer covers a portion of the micro beam length. This proposed model is considered as the main element of mass and pollutant micro sensors. The nonlinear motion equation is extracted by means of Hamilton principle, considering nonlinear shortening effect for Euler-Bernoulli beam. The non-linear effects of electrostatic excitation, geometry and inertia have been taken into account. The viscoelastic model is assumed as Kelvin-Voigt model. The motion equation is discretized by Galerkin approach. The linear free vibration mode shapes of non-uniform micro beam i.e. the linear mode shape of the system by considering the geometric and inertia effects of viscoelastic layer, have been employed as comparison function in the process of the motion equation discretization. The discretized equation of motion is solved by the use of multiple scale method of perturbation theory and the results are compared with the results of numerical Runge-Kutta approach. The frequency response variations for different lengths and thicknesses of the viscoelastic layer have been founded. The results indicate that if a constant volume of viscoelastic layer is to be deposited on the micro beam for mass or gas sensor applications, then a modified configuration may be found by using the analysis of this paper.

  • The surface rheological properties of polymer monolayer show complicated non-linear viscoelastic flow phenomena when they are subjected to spreading flow. These spreading flow properties are controlled by the characteristics of flow units. The kinetics of the formation of an interfacial film obtained after spreading poly(diisobutylene maleic acid) at air-water interface were studied by measuring of the surface pressure with time. The experimental data were analyzed theoretically according to a nonlinear surface viscoelastic model. The values of dynamic modulus, static modulus, surface viscosities and rheological parameters in various area/ monomer were obtained by appling experimental data to the equation of nonlinear surface viscoelastic model.
