  • Dispersion stability of nano-sized rutile TiO$_2$powder with acicular typed primary particle produced by homogeneous precipitation process at low temperatures was studied in aqueous and non-aqueous media in the presence of various electrolytes. The zeta potential measurements have shown that the addition of electrolytes to aqueous and non-aqueous dispersion media leads to charge reversal on TiO$_2$particle surface. The electrostatic repulsive forces acting on between TiO$_2$particles dispersed in non-aqueous media were found to be significantly greater than that in aqueous media, which relate closely to the physical properties of the organic solvents, such as viscosities and dielectric constants. The pH values, the concentration of electrolytes and the valence of the ions have changed greatly the surface potential of TiO$_2$ particles and have governed the dispersion behavior of TiO$_2$particles virtually.

  • The effect of organic processing parameters on the dispersion stability of the BaTiO$_3$-based dielectric particles and borosilicate glass particulate suspensions was investigated in a system where organic solvents, dispersant, binder and modifier were used as processing additives in a low temperature cofired ceramic fabrication processes. Two- and three-component organic solvents were used to disperse ceramic particles and it was found the better stability in the particulate suspension prepared in a bi-solvent, which was consists of toluene and ethanol in a non-azeotropic composition. The addition amount of organic additives had a great impact on dispersion in the present investigation. The flow curves of the suspensions prepared with binder and modifier were fitted according to the power-law equation, which indicates that the internal structure of the suspension could be disturbed under the applied shear stress. Finally, the LTCC green tapes were successfully tape-cast based upon the optimum formulation of LTCC suspension and its microstructure was compared with that of the hard-agglomerates.

  • Optimum synthesis conditions were investigated for the non-aqueous dispersion (NAD) polymerization of environmentally-friendly acrylic resin. The optimum amount of stabilizer was observed to be 20 wt% to prevent flocculation of the synthesized polymer particles. The optimum ratio of aliphatic solvents to aromatic solvents turned out to be 80 to 20 in order to obtain a stabilized NAD resins. The viscosity of NAD resins was affected not only by the reaction time but also by the amount of initiator and the impeller rpm. Also, the particle size and the size distribution were influenced by the amount of stabilizers and initiators. Since the stability of NAD resin was devastated by the increase in particle size when all the monomers were fed at the beginning of polymerization, the monomers need to be put into the reactor step by step throughout the entire polymerization process.

  • Environmentally-friendly acrylic resin particles having the diameter between $0.1\;and\;1\;{\mu}m$ were prepared using non-aqueous dispersion (NAD) polymerization technique. The first step is to prepare the stabilizer and the next step is the NAD polymerization by dropping an acrylic monomer to stabilizer dispersed in organic media. To obtain a NAD resin with proper level of viscosity, it fumed out that stabilizers having sufficient viscosity such as 1000 cP need to be used, for which the stepwise feeding of monomer and initiator was necessary. It was necessary to put proper amount of stabilizer, but no more increase in viscosity was observed when more than that amount of stabilizer was added. Choice of proper monomers considering solubility parameter was essential to avoid the bimodal particle size distribution in the NAD resin product.

  • The dispersion characteristics of AlN-4.5 wt% $Y_2O_3$ powder mixture by various dispersants were investigated in ethanol and methyethly-ketone (MEK) solvents. In general, the cationic polymer dispersants demonstrated superior dispersion of the powder as compared to the non-ionic ester-type dispersants or anionic phosphate-ester-based ones. The dispersion performance of the cationic polymer dispersants was sensitive to the type of solvent. An anhydric maleic-acid-based graft copolymer dispersant, AFB-1521, demonstrated a very good dispersion capability in ethanol but exhibited a much inferior dispersion in MEK. On the other hand, the dispersion of the powder mixture was very good with a phosphate-ester-based block polymer dispersant, BYK-111, in MEK solvent, while dispersionwas much degraded in ethanol.

  • This Study was performed to get the suitable oil dispersion agent by assessment of color strength of organic pigment in non-aqueous systems. Organic pigment is used as a color expression material with other body pigments in the make-up products. But occasionally aggregation or agglomeration occurs for the lack of affinity with medium, This function is the cause of disturbing homogeneous dispersion, and then bring about an instability of products. Our study, research of dispersion mechanism between the pigment and oil phase, has been executed to solve this problem, and find a oil dispersion agent having optimum dispersion condition. Generally dispersion is related to between the solid-liquid mutual properties and electrical phenomena associated with solid-liquid interface. This factor is determined to input energy, milling time, optical properties, particle size, rheological properties, etc. Ideal dispersion state is told that coloring primary solid particle is homogeneously dispersed in medium. Good dispersed colorants are strongly and clearly appeared. We are already known that the particle size of organic pigment, chemical properties and viscosity of medium, refractive index. Consequently We determine the affinity of medium and organic pigment by measuring of color strength in the same mechanical condition. UV-VISIBLE RECORDING SPECTRO PHOTOMETER is used for measuring apparatus. We can decided the dispersion level of oil dispersion agent by measuring absorbance of color strength in the visible range that diluted medium for colloid colorant particles.

  • Eco-friendly acrylic resin/clay nanocomposites containing pristine montmorillonite (PM) or modified clays (30B and 25A) were prepared from acrylic and styrenic monomers using non-aqueous dispersion (NAD) polymerization. Effect of nanoclays on physical properties of polymerization product and resulting nanocomposites was investigated. In view of NAD particle stability, addition of nanoclay at the beginning of polymerization is proved to be good. Results of gel fraction, acid value and viscosity of the NAD product showed that nanocomposites containing clay 25A showed better physical properties than the ones with other clays. GPC results exhibit the increase in molecular weight and decrease in polydispersity index for the 25A nanocomposite. Increase in layer distance confirmed from XRD analysis showed good dispersion of 25A in the nanocomposite. Thermal and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that highest glass transition temperature and storage modulus for 25A nanocomposites. These results indicate that 25A nanoclay gives the best properties in the process of non-aqueous dispersion polymerization of acrylic resin/nanoclay nanocomposites.

  • Aqueous dispersions of pristine and functionalized (COOH- and $NH_2$-) multi-walled, carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by using three types of surf act ants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic), PEO-PPO-PEO (Pluronic P84, non-ionic), and poly(styrene/$\alpha-methyl$ styrene/acrylic acid) random terpolymer, i.e., alkali-soluble resin (ASR). The aggregate size, $\zeta-potential$, and storage stability of the MWNT aqueous dispersions were investigated by using dynamic light scattering and the turbidity method at room temperature. The exfoliation of the MWNT aggregates was determined by a UV-visible spectrophotometer and the morphology of the surfactant-coated MWNTs was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In all cases, ASR showed better dispersion stability with the smallest aggregate size, compared with the other surfactants, because of its unique molecular structure, i.e., randomly incorporated carboxylic acid groups and planar phenyl groups that can be irreversibly and effectively adsorbed on the MWNT surface. A predominantly-exfoliated morphology of MWNTs was observed in the presence of ASR from the strong intensity of the UV-vis spectrum at 263 nm.

  • Poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) homopolymer, poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) homopolymer, and PVK-b-PVP block copolymer were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and the polymers were used to prepare non-aqueous graphene dispersions with four different solvents, ethanol, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dichloromethane (DCM), and tetrahydrofuran (THF). $^1H-$ and $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the polymers. Stability of graphene dispersions was measured by on-line turbidity measurement. Time-dependent Turbiscan Stability Index (TSI) values were interpreted in terms of surface tension (${\sigma}$) and solubility parameter (${\delta}$) among solvents, polymers, and graphene. It was confirmed that the solubilities of polymer and surface tension between solvent and graphene affected the dispersion stability of graphene. PVK-b-PVP block copolymer could effectively maintain the low TSI values of graphene dispersions in ethanol and THF, which have been known as poor solvents for graphene dispersions. It can also be noted that DCM shows good dispersion stability comparable to NMP, which has been known as the best solvent for graphene dispersion.

  • Dispersion behavior of the slurries consisted of Pb or Bi-based glass frits, which are used for the fabrication of green sheet as PDP front panel transparent dielectric, was examined in non-aqueous solvent system. Measurements of sedimentation height and viscosity were conducted to determine proper dispersion condition in the various solvent and dispersant system. Azotropic compound and ethyl acetate were used as the solvent and ammonium-type dispersant was applied to the slurries. All slurries were dispersed well in azotropic solvent system involving 20$\sim$50 vol% ethyl acetate at 2$\sim$3 wt% dispersant content. Especially, dispersion behavior was notably improved in the addition of ethyl acetate in the Bi-based frit slurry.
