Objectives: The objective of the study was to investigate the factors related to non-use of interdental care products (ICP) in adolescents. Methods: The 2019 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey was used, examining 57,303 subjects. Complex-sample chi-square test and logistic regression analyses were performed to identify differences in ICP according to sociodemographic characteristics and oral health behavior and to determine the factors related to non-use. Results: The ICP non-use rate was 70.9%. Factors related to the non-use of ICP were middle or low economic status (OR=1.367 and 1.677). The other significant variables were less than one tooth brushing per day (OR=1.542), no scaling within 12 months (OR=1.631), and receiving dental treatment either once or two times or more (OR=1.757 and 2.195). Conclusions: To increase the ICP usage rate, continuous attention is needed from schools and families in addition to interventions at the national level.
Background: This study was conducted to identify the level of gender sensitivity and gender equality consciousness among dental hygiene students and to confirm the necessity of gender equality programs in the curriculum. Methods: A self-report questionnaire was conducted with some dental hygiene students using the Gender Sensitivity tool and Korean Gender Egalitarianism Scale for Adolescents (KGES-A). Results: First, the gender equality consciousness of the students who took women's studies was high in the areas of educational life and socio-cultural life, and that of the subjects of grandparent families and Catholic was found to be high in the domestic life area. Second, the gender sensitivity of the subjects who took women's studies was found to be high in all sub-areas. In addition, the gender sensitivity of females was higher in the areas of sexual identity, non-violence, and self-reflection than that of males. That of 4-year college students was higher in the areas of sexual identity, openness to gender roles, and non-violence than that of 3-year college students. In addition, the gender sensitivity of Catholic students was high in the areas of sexual identity and openness to gender roles. Third, gender equality consciousness was found to have an effect depending on whether subjects took women's studies, family type, family type, and religion, and gender sensitivity was found to have an effect depending on whether subjects took women's studies or gender. Conclusion: Since dental hygienist is a profession that targets humans, education that can instill equal awareness and values of humans is important. To inspire gender sensitivity and gender equality consciousness in a prospective professional, it is necessary to conduct programs and education related to gender intelligence within dental hygiene curriculum.
Objectives : This study is aimed to seek how to promote oral health care by leading the clients with dental fears to change their behaviors in oral hygiene care based on the analysis of the relationships between the dental fears and oral health care behaviors of the clients who visit the Dental Hygiene Education Room. Methods : This study analyzed the 361 dental hygiene records of the subjects with finished treatment and accurate records among a total of 370 clients who had received dental hygiene care at the Dental Hygiene clinic in Y University from March 2007 till June 2009. According to their general features, the study analyzed whether they had any dental fears and why such fears occurred and conducted Chi-square test to compare their oral hygiene care experiences and behaviors with dental fears. Data analysis was made using the SPSS 12.0K for Window, with level of significance set at 0.05. Results : 1. In terms of dental fear or non-fear, the comparison by gender showed that women had a higher level than men, with 76 women(47.2%) answering yes; the comparison by age showed that the age group of 30 years old or older had a higher level than other groups. 2. In terms of dental fear reasons, "the past pain experiences" recorded 34.2%, showing the highest rate. 3. In addition, dental fears had influences on regular dental examination, scaling and dental hygiene education and the subjects without dental fear showed higher levels in terms of tooth-brushing frequency and time. Conclusions : To control "the past pain experiences", future dental treatment should place priority on preventive treatment and get clients to cope with pains through the preliminary education with pains. Besides, to make an effective oral health care of the clients with dental fears, dental hygienists should control the fears of the clients and perform an appropriate oral health care for them using the communication techniques to make friendly and trustworthy impressions.
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the caries resistant effect of fluoride by dental polishing prior to fluoride application in vitro. Methods : Artificial caries lesion was made on the surface of specimen enamel taken from cow's permanent cuspid on the part of labial surface after resin embedding and polishing. Artificial dental plaque was formed on the 72 dental specimen 25~45 VHN(Vickers Hardness Number) which were divided into three groups(fluoride varnish, APF gel, control) with dental polishing and without polishing respectively. Fluoride varnish and APF gel group with 20 second polishing or without polishing were immersed in the artificial saliva respectively. Control group with or without polishing were immersed in the artificial saliva. Results : 1. Significant difference was not found by fluoride varnish between polishing group and non polishing group (p>0.01). 1) polishing group. The changes of Vickers Hardness Number(VHN) were $14.49{\pm}13.73$. 2) non-polishing group. The changes of VHN were $11.67{\pm}5.39$. 2. Significant difference was not found by APF gel between polishing group and non polishing group (p>0.01). 1) polishing group. The changes of VHN were $8.48{\pm}8.37$. 2) non-polishing group. The changes of VHN were $5.32{\pm}2.59$. Conclusions : Showed no significant difference between polishing group and non-polishing group regardless of fluoride materials (fluoride varnish, APF gel).
This study investigates the relationship between smoking and periodontal disease through quantitative analysis of intra-buccal oral pathogenic bacteria detected in smokers and aims to yield objective baseline data for applications in anti-smoking and dental health education programs. From April to May 2016, participants in an oral health management program within an intensive dental hygiene training course at Choonhae College of Health Sciences received an explanation of the study purposes and methods, after which male smokers aged 18~30 years agreed to participate voluntarily. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of oral pathogenic bacteria was performed after collecting gingival sulcus fluid samples from 67 smokers. The intra-buccal oral pathogenic bacteria distributions were analyzed based on the subjects' general characteristics, smoking behaviors, and oral care behaviors. The distribution results show that pathogens in the anterior teeth are affected (in this order) by age, toothbrush size, and smoking status; older people had fewer pathogens, those who used larger toothbrushes had more pathogens, and smokers had more pathogens, compared to non-smokers ($_{adj}R^2=19.1$). In the posterior teeth, pathogens were influenced (in this order) by smoking status, smoking duration, and the number of tooth brushings per day; smokers had more pathogens than non-smokers, and those who brushed their teeth more often had fewer pathogens ($_{adj}R^2=25.1$). The overall pathogen distribution was affected only by smoking status: smokers generally had more pathogens, compared to non-smokers. Therefore, it is necessary to provide information about the risk of periodontal disease due to smoking during anti-smoking or dental health education sessions; particularly, the use of smaller toothbrushes for anterior teeth and the need for smokers in their early twenties to quit smoking for dental health should be highly emphasized.
Objetives : It tries to grasp whether the knowledge and attitude about the oral health of the school dental clinic operation school and non-operation school with 6 grade children in Daejeon Metropolitan City and the school dental clinic operation reaches any influence to the oral health of the child or not. Methods : The self-administered survey was performed for the school dental clinic operation group (201 people) and non-operation group (207 people) child 408 people from October 5th in 2009 until October 31st. By using the spss statistical program(VER 15.0), the statistical analysis performed the chi-square verification and t-test. Results : 1. The knowledge degree about the oral health according to the oral health education is the health education experienced group $22.34{\pm}3.36$ and non-experienced group $20.32{\pm}3.49$ (p=0.000), and the attitude showed the health education experienced group $15.06{\pm}2.99$ and non-experienced group $13.30{\pm}3.20$, oral health education experienced group significantly higher in the knowledge and the attitude, there was statistically significant difference(p=0.000). 2. The knowledge degree about the oral health according to the school dental clinic operation is school dental clinic group $22.84{\pm}2.92$ and non-school dental clinic group $20.83{\pm}3.73$ (p=0.000), and attitude showed high the school dental clinic group as the school dental clinic group $15.48{\pm}2.75$ and non-school dental clinic group $13.76{\pm}3.26$, there was statistically significant difference (p=0.000). Conclusions : The knowledge degree and attitude about the oral health showed high in oral health education experience group and the school dental clinic group when looking at the result described in the above. It thinks that the school dental clinic group has to be expanded for the oral health promotion of the children.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to help form treatment relationship with patient through more effective communication by defining the relationship between dental hygienist's medical communication and outpatient's reliance satisfaction. Methods : The study researched 273 male and female patients who visited dental clinics and hospitals of Busan from March 12 to March 26, 2012 and its results are as follows. Results : 1. The linguistic communication of dental hygienist was $3.72{\pm}0.63$ and non-linguistic communication was $3.48{\pm}0.58$. 2. For the dental hygienist's reliance satisfaction, the reliance was $3.62{\pm}0.65$ and the satisfaction was $3.74{\pm}0.65$. 3. The dental hygienist's communication degree depending on general characteristic was statistically significant when the job of patient was housewife(p<0.001) and the number of dental clinic visits was more than 10 times (p<0.000). The dental hygienist's non-linguistic communication was statistically significant depending on patient's gender(p<0.000), age(p<0.002), job(p<0.001) and number of dental clinic visits (p<0.000). 4. The dental hygienist's reliance and satisfaction showed statistically significant difference depending on patient's gender(p<0.000), age(p<0.002), job(p<0.001) and number of dental clinic visits (p<0.000). 5. The dental hygienist's non-linguistic communication showed a positive correlation with reliance and satisfaction(p=0.000). Conclusions : When considering the result above, it is necessary to develop the teaching method and material to educate the communication ability of dental manpower. It is necessary to reinforce the curriculum of dental hygienics and the education of dental hygienist to perform effective, smooth communication between dental hygienists.

Fluoride use is the best and widespread method for dental caries prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate experience and recognition of fluoride for caries prevention focusing on majors in one university. Four hundred twenty-four university students were selected by convenience sampling with informed consent and answered the questionnaire by self recording type. The subjects except dental hygiene students knew about purpose of fluoride use (84.6%), over the count fluoride rinse (63.2%), fluoride toothpaste (61.5%), professional fluoride application (56.4%) and water fluoridation (43.6%). They experienced over the count fluoride rinse (67.5%), school fluoride rinse (45.3%), professional fluoride application (30.8%), fluoride toothpaste (28.2%) and water fluoridation (12.0%). The main information paths about fluoride were university lectures among dental hygiene students and internet and mass media, followed by nurse-teachers among non dental hygiene students. The ratios of intention to use fluoride were: 67.8% in dental hygiene, 34.9% in health, 51.4% in non-health in case of professional fluoride application for oneself, 93.1% in dental hygiene, 48.0% in health, 50.4% in non-health in case of professional fluoride application for their children, 79.0% in dental hygiene, 51.3% in health, 55.8% in non-health in case of water fluoridation. The subjects to experience and recognize fluoride for caries prevention had more positive intention to use fluoride. The answers of students majoring in health or medical care were not different from non-health, except dental hygiene. Dental professionals should try to let the public know about fluoride use for caries prevention through mass media and internet as well as individual education in dental clinics.
Objectives: This study surveyed the application of Comprehensive Dental Hygiene Care (CDHC), based on non-surgical periodontal therapy within the educational curricula of Korean universities and examined whether they recognized the need for CDHC. Methods: This study analyzed data from professors of dental hygiene practicum related subjects in 75 Korean universities. The collected data were analyzed using a Chi-square test, a Mann-Whitney U-test, and a Kruskal Wallis test via SPSS (Ver. 21.0). Results: First, the application scope of CDHC was higher in four-year universities than three-year ones with the scope of several characteristics increasing along with enrollment quota. The application scope of dental hygiene plans and actions increased with the number of patient practices in terms of periodontal evaluations. Second, the needs of the dental hygiene courses were more than 4 points in all characteristics. Although four-year universities exhibited higher points than three-year ones, there was no significant difference found except other test. Finally, all universities based their dental hygiene courses on case histories, oral and maxillofacial information, hard tissue modules, periodontal issues, and other tests, with needs also being high. Meanwhile, the application scope of the dental hygiene course evaluations was lowest in all characteristics. Conclusions: There were no significant differences in dental hygiene curricula among the universities. However, highly qualified and standardized educational courses and lectures should be developed by the Korean evaluation center for dental hygiene curricula using various studies as the basis of theory and practical classes, the total number of terms, number of case studies used, number of students per class, ratio of students to professor, and so on.
The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of the oral health practice between dental hygiene students and Non-Dental Hygiene students in an effort to shed light on the importance of oral health education and its implications for personnels responsible for oral health practice. Their oral health awareness was investigated, and what factors might affect their actual oral health practice was observed. An then a comparative analysis was conducted. Followings are the main results of this study. First, when the characteristics of the self-rated oral health of the college students were analyzed, the dental hygiene students were ahead of the other students who didn't major in dental hygiene in every factor including oral health concern(p<0.001), awareness of oral health importance(p<0.01) and self-perceived oral health status(p<0.01). Second, the dental hygiene students significantly excelled the other students in both the level of oral health awareness(p<0.001) and the level of oral health practice(p<0.001). The findings of the study showed that more oral health education experiences led to better oral health awareness and better oral health practice, and that better oral health awareness led to better oral health practice.
