  • Nowadays, many robots have evolved to imitate human social skills such that sociable interaction with humans is possible. Socially interactive robots require abilities different from that of conventional robots. For instance, human-robot interactions are accompanied by emotion similar to human-human interactions. Robot emotional expression is thus very important for humans. This is particularly true for facial expressions, which play an important role in communication amongst other non-verbal forms. In this paper, we introduce a method of creating lifelike facial expressions in robots using variation of affect values which consist of the robot's emotions based on emotional boundaries. The proposed method was examined by experiments of two facial robot simulators.

  • Expressive face and human body gestures are among the main non-verbal communication channels in human-human interaction. Understanding human emotions through body gesture is one of the necessary skills both for humans and also for the computers to interact with their human counterparts. Gesture analysis is consisted of several processes such as detecting of hand, extracting feature, and recognizing emotions. Skin color information for tracking hand gesture is obtained from face detection region. We have revealed relationships between paricular body movements and specific emotions by using HMM(Hidden Markov Model) classifier. Performance evaluation of emotional human body recognition has experimented.

  • The Paper aims to survey and analyze the meaning 'Absence of body' from clothes as non-verbal communication medium. Two types of absence of body from clothes are clothes as object because of removing body, and flattened colthes to deny the body form. In results of analysis, 1)the confrontation of male/female was represented by positive/negative, active/passive, present/absent. 2) male/female means social/private, body/clothing, relevant/irrelevant, subjective/additive. 3) one/numbers, simple/various, limited/free present the various way of waering. 4) tradition/contemporary is expressed by materials 5) enlarged clothes expresses the cynical attitude about body 6) inside/outside , one dress/layered dress suggest new concept to wear against traditional way of wearing.

  • Isotype should be carried out together with the function of explaining procedures, processes, usages, etc. accurately. Because it is a semitic semantic-information-intensive object as an representative example of non-verbal communication, it must meet formative conditions for conveying the various meanings of symbolic contents retained in it suggestively. In this way isotype is a common language with visuality, attention and universality, expressing definite contents in specific images. That is, it is necessary to establish a visual perceptive standard, design guidelines and required conditions and to implement systematically by stipulating rules for management. Thus isotype used in FRT, which is designed for easy perception of concepts, procedures, methods, structures, etc., can contain all factors used in the expression of information.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the preference by emoticon types according to the gender of sender, emotion types of message and intimacy with the recipient. Results show that women mostly prefer to use dynamic and imaged emoticon than men. However, the preference of using text messages increases when both men and women express uncomfortable emotion. Especially, when users send family messages, they tend to prefer for text message. And when users send close friends messages, the preference for dynamic and imaged emoticon is high. When users send distant friends messages, the similar tendency is shown regardless of emotion. These results can provide the information to use emoticon in the filed of education and take advantage in digital education and mobile education.

  • Social and psychological experiences in human-agent interactions are becoming more important than the task-oriented efficiency, as the influence of computer agents increases and human-agent interaction develops similarly with interpersonal interaction. Many previous studies aimed to increase social presence in human-agent interaction, in order to derive users' positive psychological experiences, by applying the factors of interpersonal communication to verbal and non-verbal communication of the agents. This study examined the effects of the exchanges of mutual self-disclosure, one of the most important communication acts in interpersonal communication, between users and interface agents. Users' attachment styles towards the perception of social presence, the evaluations toward the agents, user experiences, and the intentions for future interaction were also studied. The mediating role of social presence in dependent variables was, also, examined in this research. The results showed that exchanging self-disclosures with an agent increased the perceptions of social experience, friendly evaluations toward the agent, positive user experience, and the intentions for future interaction. Participants' attachment styles, also, affected the perceptions of the dependent variables. The effects of the exchanges of self-disclosure and participants' attachment styles were mediated by perceived social presence toward the agent. The findings of this study imply that the social and communicational aspects need to be considered in design of the agents seriously. The results also suggest that there may be differences in the psychological effects of agents on users according to the users' personality.

  • Unlike face-to-face communication, text-based communication by digital media has limitations that non-verbal elements are eliminated and social presence decrease. To overcome this problem, people try to find solutions which visualize emotion and situation by using emoticons, icons, computer language and so on. As most SMS users experience the failure of using emotions on the mobile phone, they need to make up for this point. In this study, we conducted research on the recent mobile fonts situations and surveyed users' perception on SMS fonts as to suggest solutions of expressing and visualizing emotions on the mobile phone, a representative media of personal communication. As a solution of reducing the failure, we conducted a survey on users' perception about fonts and the capability of the expressing emotions by fonts. The survey found that mobile fonts can be used as a method to express human emotion. As a finding, the shape of the font can be used as a method to visualize the emotion through text messaging. In future studies, such a method can be applied to variety of different personal media with the communication method based on text. Those studies can propose different usage for fonts in communication.

  • Audible Pedestrian Signal(APS) is an additional equipment to provide information about pedestrian signals in non-visual formats such as audible tones and verbal messages. It can provide information to pedestrians about the location and directions of a crosswalk, and the traffic signal status. In general, a pedestrian who is visually impaired uses a 358.5MHz wireless remote controller to activate the APS and crosses at the crosswalk with the help of the APS. The existing APS can only receive an activation message from the remote controller. Therefore, the APS has an issue, especially at intersections, that all APSs within the communication range of the remote controller are activated simultaneously. It makes to confuse the visual impaired pedestrians. In this paper, we propose a BLE-enabled APS that can enable two-way communication via Bluetooth with a smartphone. The proposed system solves the problem and provides them with additional information, so that visually impaired pedestrians can cross at the crosswalk more conveniently.

  • Purpose: This study aims to find out the relationship between the impact of Korean crew on airline service quality in the global aviation market, which is the representative of the face-to-face sales and can help in the face-to-face market of aviation services. Research design, data: The survey was conducted for about a month from March 1 to April 6, 2020, and a total of 300 copies were used in the analysis of the results. To verify the hypothesis, data was analyzed using the statistical package program SPSS 18.0, and frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results: It is a study on the sales of face-to-face service of crews of global airlines. Non-verbal elements in airline service face-to-face sales have been shown to have a significant impact on service quality. Conclusions: In the face-to-face service sales of global airlines, communication has been shown to affect service quality. A face-to-face sale using mother tongue means important. The better the flight attendant's linguistic face-to-face selling ability, the more positive on the airline's quality of service. It suggests that the communication skills of managers in the aviation service market are important for repurchase.

  • This study is focused on a compositional viewpoint of camera appears in animation feature films through nonverbal communication approach; analyzing the approach would reveal more effective interaction between receivers' and actants' communication. The content of study includes semiological analysis of one of Hayao Miyazaki's master pieces, Howl's Moving Castle, in terms of descriptive structure and interpretation of screen. The semiological analysis methods in this study composes with sequence analysis, actant analysis, disjunction and conjunction analysis, and "shot" in media semiology analysis. Through these analyses, a conclusion has been drawn that a characteristic of interactive symbol connects audience and feature films. This study applies nonverbal communication in compositional viewpoint of camera to bring more effective approach for communication among actants, animation feature films, and receivers.
