  • A new algorithm for determining noise level is proposed for more reliability in interpreting spectral data for complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectra of petroleum. In the new algorithm, a moving window with a fixed number of data points was adopted, instead of a fixed m/z width. In the analysis of petroleum, it was found that a moving window of 50,000 or more data points was optimal. This optimized automated peak picking performed well even with frequency-dependant noise in the mass spectrum. Additionally, this fast, automated peak picking algorithm was suitable for the analysis of a large set of samples.

  • Axial fans are widely used for automotive engine cooling device due to their ability to produce high flow rate to keep engine cool. At the same time, the noise generated by these fans causes one of the most serious problems. Especially, engine cooling fan noise in idle condition of a car is noticeable. Therefore. the high efficient and low-noise fan is seriously needed. When a new fan system is designed, system resistance and non-uniform inflow are the key factors to get the high performance and low noise fan system. In this study, aerodynamic and acoustic calculations are carried out on the automotive cooling fan and system. Effects of various design parameters are studied through the free wake analysis and experiments. Better performance and noise characteristic are obtained for the new design fan using the methodology. Furthermore through the modification of the fan system geometry parameters, the fan system produce more flow rate and become less noisy.

  • For efficient noise reduction in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrum, a new algorithm was proposed. The suggested algorithm reduces white and electrical noise, and it improves signal-to-noise ratio. This algorithm has been optimized to reduce the noise more efficiently using the traces of signal level. The algorithm has been efficiently combined with derivative window to improve the resolution as well S/N. Time domain data was corrected for DC voltage interference. $t^n$ window was applied in time domain data to improved the resolution. However, $t^n$ window can improve the signal resolution, it will also increase the noise level in frequency domain. Therefore, newly developed noise reduction algorithm will be applied to make a balance between resolving power and S/N ratio for magnitude mode. The trace algorithm can determine the current data point with several data points (mean, past data, calculated past data). In the current calculations, we assumed data points with S/N ratio more than 3 were considered as signal data points. After the windowing and noise reduction, both resolution and signal-to-noise ratio were improved. This algorithm is applicable more efficiently to frequency dependent noise and large size data.

  • The Helmholtz resonator is one of noise control elements widely used in many practical applications. However the resonator array system, which is sometimes used to reflect or absorb low frequency noise, has not been well studied. We have investigated the difference in sound absorption of the Helmholtz resonator array panel caused by change in the resonator arrangement. Experiments and numerical calculations for various Helmholtz resonator array panels are carried out and the results are compared each other. The comparisons show that the acoustic coupling between closely located resonators affects the performance of the sound absorbing system. Particularly, the distance between resonators has a significant effect on the broadness of the sound absorption coefficient.

  • Fluid-borne noise produced by seawater circulating pumps propagates through the seawater connected pipes and radiates from the hull opening of a ship. This noise causes the increases of underwater radiated noise and self noise of ship. To reduce the noise propagation through the seawater connected pipes, absorptive silencer must be needed. In this paper, theoretical model to analyze the transmission loss of absorptive silencer was presented and the design parameters of absorptive silencer were verified. Theoretical calculations were performed according to a thickness, a length, an internal pressure and mechanical properties of its absorptive material in order to analyze the characteristics of absorptive silencer. From the theoretical calculation results, the absorptive silencer was manufactured and transmission loss was measured in the test facilities. The results of theory and measurement are compared and discussed.

  • Flexible media such as the paper, the film, etc. are thin, light and very flexible. They behave in geometrically nonlinear. Any of small force makes large deformation. So we must including aerodynamic effect when its behavior is predicted. Thus, it becomes fully coupled fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem. In FSI problems, where the fluid mesh near the structure undergoes large deformations and becomes unacceptably distorted, which drive the time step to a very small value for explicit calculations, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) methods or rezoning are used to create a new undistorted mesh for the fluid domain, which allows the calculations to continue. In this paper, FE sheet model considering geometric nonlinearity is formulated to simulate the behavior of the flexible media. Aerodynamic force to the media by surrounding air is calculated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Q2Q1(Taylor-Hood) element which means biquadratic for velocity and bilinear for pressure is used for fluid domain. Q2Q1 element satisfies LBB condition and any stabilization technique is not needed. In this paper, cantilevered sheet in the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes flow is simulated to check the mesh motion and numerical integration scheme, and then falling paper in the air is simulated and the effects of some representative parameters are investigated.

  • The purpose of study is to confirm a acceptable range of data errors in data collecting. To examine a acceptable range of data errors, emission level is calculated for a vehicle flow and heavy vehicle percentage as a function of small-sized velocity. According to road selected, noise level of detail influence road noise calculations. It can be concluded that a vehicle flow raised an error less than 5000(veh/h) for a maximum error in emission level of 3.01dB, and the more a heavy vehicle percentage have a low value, the more emission level is a slight difference. This analysis gives insight regarding the accuracy of traffic flow data that is needed to reach a certain level of accuracy for the resulting noise level.

  • In this crankshaft of marine diesel engines the exciting torques are produced by gas pressure and reciprocating masses. These torques are periodically changing and are extremely out of balance. To calculate the torsional vibrations of propulsion shafting caused by unbalanced torque the torque harmonics are utilized. Until now to calculate the torsional vibrations of propulsion shafting. the torque harmonics have been supplied by the engine maker. When the torque harmonics of an engine are not available the torque harmonics of a similar engine type had to be used. However such data is not suitable for the reliable calculations of torsional vibrations. In this paper the combustion characteristics of marine diesel engines including $\rho{-}\upsilon$ diagram are investigated and the torque harmonics based on these are theoretically calculated. reliability of the calculations is confirmed by comparing them with those of an engine maker. This study should prove useful for the calculations of torsional vibrations for diesel engine propulsion shafting. particularly for 4-stroke engines whose torque harmonics are difficult to obtain directly from the engine and not ordinarily supplied by the engine maker.

  • In this study, the effects of inclined shaft angle on the hydro-acoustic performance of cavitating marine propellers are investigated by a numerical method developed before and Brown's empirical formula. The cavitating blades are represented by source and vortex elements. The cavity characteristics of the blades such as cavitation form, cavity volume, cavity length etc., are computed at a given cavitation number and at a set advance coefficient. A lifting surface method is applied for these calculations. The numerical lifting surface method is validated with experimental results of DTMB 4119 model benchmark propeller. After calculation of hydrodynamic characteristics of the cavitating propeller, noise spectrum and overall sound pressure level (OASPL) are computed by Brown's equation. This empirical equation is also validated with another numerical results found in the literature. The effects of inclined shaft angle on thrust coefficient, torque coefficient, efficiency and OASPL values are examined by a parametric study. By modifying the inclination angles of propeller, the thrust, torque, efficiency and OASPL are computed and compared with each other. The influence of the inclined shaft angle on cavity patterns on the blades are also discussed.
