Owing to the growing size of the eigenvalue problem and the growing number of eigenvalues desired, solution methods of iterative nature are becoming more popular than ever, which however suffer from low efficiency and lack of proper convergence criteria. In this paper, three efficient iterative eigenvalue algorithms are considered, i.e., subspace iteration method, iterative Ritz vector method and iterative Lanczos method based on the cell sparse fast solver and loop-unrolling. They are examined under the mode error criterion, i.e., the ratio of the out-of-balance nodal forces and the maximum elastic nodal point forces. Averagely speaking, the iterative Ritz vector method is the most efficient one among the three. Based on the mode error convergence criteria, the eigenvalue solvers are shown to be more stable than those based on eigenvalues only. Compared with ANSYS's subspace iteration and block Lanczos approaches, the subspace iteration presented here appears to be more efficient, while the Lanczos approach has roughly equal efficiency. The methods proposed are robust and efficient. Large size tests show that the improvement in terms of CPU time and storage is tremendous. Also reported is an aggressive shifting technique for the subspace iteration method, based on the mode error convergence criteria. A backward technique is introduced when the shift is not located in the right region. The efficiency of such a technique was demonstrated in the numerical tests.
The objective of this study is to formulate a general 3D material-structural analysis framework for the thermomechanical behavior of steel-concrete structures in a fire environment. The proposed analysis framework consists of three sequential modeling parts: fire dynamics simulation, heat transfer analysis, and a thermomechanical stress analysis of the structure. The first modeling part consists of applying the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) where coupled CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with thermodynamics are combined to realistically model the fire progression within the steel-concrete structure. The goal is to generate the spatial-temporal (ST) solution variables (temperature, heat flux) on the surfaces of the structure. The FDS-ST solutions are generated in a discrete form. Continuous FDS-ST approximations are then developed to represent the temperature or heat-flux at any given time or point within the structure. An extensive numerical study is carried out to examine the best ST approximation functions that strike a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The second modeling part consists of a finite-element (FE) transient heat analysis of the structure using the continuous FDS-ST surface variables as prescribed thermal boundary conditions. The third modeling part is a thermomechanical FE structural analysis using both nonlinear material and geometry. The temperature history from the second modeling part is used at all nodal points. The ABAQUS (2003) FE code is used with external user subroutines for the second and third simulation parts in order to describe the specific heat temperature nonlinear dependency that drastically affects the transient thermal solution especially for concrete materials. User subroutines are also developed to apply the continuous FDS-ST surface nodal boundary conditions in the transient heat FE analysis. The proposed modeling framework is applied to predict the temperature and deflection of the well-documented third Cardington fire test.
The aim of this contribution is to present a new link/beam finite element suitable for electrothermo-structural analysis of uni-axially graded materials. Continuous polynomial variation of geometry and material properties will be considered. The element matrix and relations for solution of Joule's heat (and its distribution to the element nodes) have been established in the sense of a sequence method of a coupled problem solution. The expression for the solution of nodal forces caused by a continuously distributed temperature field has also been derived. The theoretical part of this contribution is completed by numerical validation, which proves the high accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed element. The results of the performed experiments are compared with those obtained using the more expensive multiphysical link element and solid element of the FEM program Ansys. The proposed finite element could be used not only in the multiphysical analysis of the current paths and actuators but also in analysis of other 1D construction parts made of composite or uni-axially graded materials.
This paper presents the formulation for a novel force-based 1-D compound-element that captures both material and second order P-${\Delta}$ nonlinearities in steel frames. At the nodal points, the element is attached to nonlinear rotational and a translational springs which represent the flexural and axial stiffness of the connections respectively. By decomposing the total strain in the material as well as the generalised displacements of the flexible connections to their elastic and inelastic components, a secant solution strategy based on a direct iterative scheme is introduced and the corresponding solution strategy is outlined. The strain and slope of the deformed element are assumed to be small; however the equilibrium equations are satisfied for the deformed element taking account of P-${\Delta}$ effects. The formulation accuracy and efficiency is verified by some numerical examples on the nonlinear static, cyclic and dynamic analysis of steel frames.

In this paper, a global acoustic design sensitivity analysis (DSA) of field point pressure with respect to structural sizing design variables is developed. Firstly acoustic sensitivity is formulated and implemented numerically. And it is combined with continuum structural sensitivity to obtain the global acoustic, design sensitivity. For this procedure, GASA (global acoustic design sensitivity analyzer) has been developed. A half scale of automobile cavity model is considered in this paper. In order to confirm accuracy of the results of global acoustic DSA obtained by GASA, it is compared with the result of central finite difference method. In order to reduce computation time, Rayleigh approximated solution is evaluated and compared with the solution which used every nodal velocities. Also the acoustic optimization procedure is performed using design sensitivities. From these numerical studies, it can be shown that global acoustic DSA is a useful tool to improve acoustic problems.
A new reinforcing steel model which is embedded inside a concrete element and also accounts for the effect of bond-slip is developed. Unlike the classical bond-link or bond-zone element using double nodes, the proposed model is considering the bond-slip effect without taking double nodes by incorporation of the equivalent steel stiffness. After calculation of nodal displacements, the deformation of steel at each node can be found through the back-substitution technique from the first to the final steel element using a governing equation constructed based on the equilibrium at each node of steel and the compatibility condition between steel and concrete. This model results in significant savings in the number of nodes needed to account for the effect of bond-slip, in particular, when the model is used for three dimensional finite element problems. Moreover a new nonlinear solution scheme is developed in connection with this model. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results and several parameter studies are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model.
KAERI has recently developed the nuclear design code MASTER for the application to reactor physics analyses for pressurized water reactors. Its neutronics model solves the space-time dependent neutron diffusion equations with the advanced nodal methods. The major calculation categories of MASTER consist of microscopic depletion, steady-state and transient solution, xenon dynamics, adjoint solution and pin power and burnup reconstruction. The MASTER validation analyses, which are in progress aiming to submit the Uncertainty Topical Report to KINS in the first half of 1996, include global reactivity calculations and detailed pin-by-pin power distributions as well as in-core detector reaction rate calculations. The objective of this paper is to give an overall description of the CASMO/MASTER code system whose verification results are in details presented in the separate papers.
This paper is concerned with the following Schrödinger-Poisson system $$\{\begin{array}{lll}-{\Delta}u+V(x)u+K(x){\phi}u=a(x){\mid}u{\mid}^{p-2}u&&\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^3,\\-{\Delta}{\phi}=K(x)u^2&&\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^3,\end{array}$$ where 4 < p < 6. For the case that K is nonnegative, V and a are indefinite, we prove the above problem possesses one ground state sign-changing solution with exactly two nodal domains by constraint variational method and quantitative deformation lemma. Moreover, we show that the energy of sign-changing solutions is larger than that of the ground state solutions. The novelty of this paper is that the potential a is indefinite and allowed to vanish at infinity. In this sense, we complement the existing results obtained by Batista and Furtado [5].
