  • The bridges where serious damages, defects, material degradations, etc. are not found can be presumed to have enough safety for the specified design loads, nevertheless, in many cases the loading carrying capacity is rated through loading tests. The safety specifications and manuals get no further than qualitative instructions for performing loading test or not. Some studies presented the improved appraisal methods for determining the load carrying capacity; however, the feasibility studies for loading test are scarcely carried out. This study examines an existing question, whether the loading tests are necessarily required in the safety assessment or not, and suggests an alternative for that via a statistical analysis for dozens of condition evaluation reports for concrete bridges.

  • This study establishes a numerical analysis model of the finite element overhung rotor supported by a DTRB and describes the stiffness properties of the DTRB. The vibration characteristics and contact pressure of the RBR system are predicted according to the DTRB support characteristics such as the initial axial compression and roller profile. The stiffness of the DTRB significantly varies depending on the initial axial compression and external load owing to the occurrence of rollers under the no-load condition and increase in the Hertz contact force. The increase in the initial axial compression increases the rigidity of the DTRB, thereby reducing the displacement of the RBR system and simultaneously increasing the natural frequency. However, above a certain initial axial compression, the effect becomes insignificant, and an excessive increase in the initial axial compression increases the contact pressure. The roller crowning radius, which gives a curvature in the longitudinal direction of the roller, decreases the displacement of the RBR system and increases the natural frequency as the value increases. However, an increase in the crowning radius increases the edge stress, causing a negative effect in terms of the contact pressure. These results show that the DTRB support characteristics required for reducing the vibration and contact pressure of the RBR system supported by the DTRB can be designed.

  • At present, there are no clearly stated criteria or theories in calculating additional vertical dynamic loads that occur at the machine foundation due to vibration and reflecting them in the design at home and abroad. According to the domestic standard, although it is not a serious vibration condition, the additional dynamic load due to vibration is considered up to 100% of the static load. This is an extremely conservative design. The purpose of this study is to propose a model test method for evaluating the quantitative magnitude of additional dynamic loads that are generated at certain static loads due to vertical mechanical vibrations. As preliminary basic tests for the model tests, the test for evaluating the effects of reflective wave that may occur within a limited size soil box and the test for estimating the natural frequency of the devised model soil-foundation system were carried out. From the analysis of results for basic tests, a method to minimize the influence of the reflected wave was prepared, and the effect of the resonance of the model system was minimized during the model tests. After the basic tests, the main model tests were conducted. Through the proposed main test, the quantitative magnitude of additional dynamic loads caused by machine vibration on a shallow foundation for machine on medium dense sand foundations were evaluated. From the results of the model test, the feasibility of design applied at home and abroad was reviewed.

  • DME (Dimethyl Ether, $CH_3OCH_3$) has highly attracted attention as an alternative fuel for transportation, power generation and LPG substitute owing to its easy transportation and cleanliness. This study was conducted to verify the combustion performance and to identify potential problems when DME is fuelled to a gas turbine. GE7EA gas turbine of Pyong-Tak power plant was selected as a target to apply the DME. Combustion tests were conducted by comparing DME with methane, which is a major component of natural gas, in terms of combustion instability, $NO_X$ and CO emissions, and the outlet temperature of the combustion chamber. The results of the performance tests show that DME is very clean but has a low combustion efficiency in low load condition. From the results of the fuel nozzle temperature we have ascertained that DME is easy to flash back, and this property should be considered when operating a gas turbine and retrofitting a burner.

  • The interrupting capability of gas circuit breakers(GCB) are critically dependent on the pressure rise of the puffer cylinder or the thermal expansion chamber at current zero. Therefore it's very useful for the designers to know the pressure rise there at the design stage. Much effort has been done to predict the pressure rise in the puffer cylinder or the thermal expansion chamber in no-load condition. Thus, we now calculate it with reasonable accuracy with the simple programs coded by ourselves or with the commercial CFD packages. However, it has been still difficult problem to calculate it under the existence of arc. In this paper, we propose a method which can be used to predict the pressure rise in the thermal expansion chamber of thermal expansion type GCB. The method has been applied to the 25.8kV 25kA thermal expansion type model GCB and the calculated results have been compared with those from experiment.

  • Heat (mass) transfer characteristics have been investigated on the endwall of a large-scale linear turbine cascade passage under a combustor-level high free-stream turbulence with a large length scale. Local heat (mass) transfer coefficients are measured by using the naphthalene sublimation technique. The result shows that local heat (mass) transfer on the endwall is greatly enhanced in the central region of the turbine passage, but there is no noticeable change in the local heat (mass) transfer in the region suffering severe heat load. Under the high free-stream turbulence, the local heat (mass) transfer coefficient shows more uniform distribution and its average value across the whole endwall region is increased by 26% of that at low turbulence condition. The heat (mass) transfer data on the endwall strongly supports that well-organized vortices near the endwall tends to suffer an suppression by the high free-stream turbulence.

  • Recently, demands for the development of compact, lightweight power supplies with higher power density and higher efficiency have been increased. Since Piezoelectric Transformer (PT) was emerged in device and material industry, it has been suggested as a viable alternative to the magnetic transformer in some applications. PT has some advantages such as low profile and mechanical energy transfer with little electromagnetic interface (EMI). Also, PT can provide high voltage stepping ratio with good isolation and requires no copper windings saving copper usage especially for large voltage conversion differences. Conventional control of PT converter has mainly two-way. One is the pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control method and the other is the pulse width modulation (PWM) control with frequency fixed method. It is known that the maximum PT efficiency can be obtained when it operates near the resonant frequency of the PT. And, also PT's resonant frequency moves according to the load condition. Therefore, selection of PT converter control method is very difficult. This paper analyzes general piezo-electric converter modeling and proposes a guide-line to selection of control method and stabilization control.

  • A ultrasonic transduce with a single acoustic matching layer has been designed as an attempt to increase the bandwidth of underwater transducer. The wideband resonance condition was accomplished by attaching a single matching layer on the front face of a ceramic resonator composed of a piezoelectric bar, a taper part and a head part. A modified Mason's model was used for the performance analysis and the design of transducers, and the constructed transducers were tested experimentally and numerically by changing the impedance and thickness of the matching layer in the water tank. The obtained results are summarized as follows:1. Measured resonant and antiresonant frequencies of the piezoelectric transducer with no matching layer in air were 24.7 kHz and 25.6 kHz, respectively. 2. Two resonant frequencies of the piezoelectric transducer with a single matching layer were 21.7 kHx and 26.9 kHz, respectively, in air and 21.4 kHz and 22.7 kHz, respectively, with a water load.3. Two distinct resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response(TVR) of the developed transducer were observed at 22.0 kHz and 25.8 kHz, respectively, with center frequency of 24.0 kHz. The values of TVR at these frequencies were 130.1 dB re $1 \muPa$/V at 22.0 kHz and 128.5 dB re $1 \muPa$/V at 25.8 kHz, respectively.Reasonable agreement between the experimental results and the numerical values was achieved.

  • Inspection of vehicle systems is regularly performed by the state to ensure the emission status and the safety of vehicles. Thereby, the safety and quality of life can be improved by reducing green-house gases and fine dust, which are the main causes of vehicle defects and air pollution. This study analyzed the soot measuring probes used in the free acceleration mode method, at no-load condition, looking at the efficiency of a probe to measure soot emissions from diesel vehicles. In this study, a technique that can improve the inhalation efficiency of the probe over the (a) probes and the improved (b) probes was applied to probes (c). Probe (c) involves a structure designed close to the center of the circumference of the exhaust pipe. Results showed that the suction efficiency was improved by adding a variable center unit.
