Nutrient Synchrony: Is it a Suitable Strategy to Improve Nitrogen Utilization and Animal Performance?

  • The objective of this paper was to review recent studies on nutrient synchrony and the effects of synchronization of energy and N supply in the rumen on nitrogen utilization and animal performance. Theoretically, synchronization of energy and N supply in the rumen should allow more efficient use of nutrients by rumen microbes, increase microbial protein and fermentation end products, and thus increase available nutrients in the small intestine. Efficient use of nutrients possibly improves animal performance and reduces nutrient excretion to the environment. However, a number of studies showed contradictory results in microbial protein synthesis, nitrogen retention and animal production performance. Since there are additional challenges to nutrient synchrony that must be addressed, further research is required to apply the nutrient synchrony concept directly to the field situation.

Utilization of Energy and Protein in Local Indian Crossb red Gilts Fed Diets Containing Different Levels of Rice Bran

  • Fifty four crossbred gilts of 26.38${\pm}$0.85 kg body weight and 25 weeks of age were randomly divided into three groups, having six replicates of three animals each and were assigned to one of the three dietary treatments containing corn, wheat bran and rice bran (RB) at 35, 47 and 0% in $R_1$; 17.5, 23.5 and 41% in $R_2$ and 0, 0 and 82% in $R_3$. Soybean meal and fishmeal were used as source of protein at 10 and 6%, respectively, in all the rations. Average daily CP, DCP, DE and ME intake per kg $W^{0.75}$ and body weight gains were lowest (p<0.01) in gilts fed 82% RB ($R_3$), followed by $R_2$ and R1. Utilization of protein with respect to nitrogen balance and DCP conversion efficiency did not differ (p>0.05) between the treatment groups. All the gilts were in positive nitrogen balance. However, the excretion of dietary nitrogen and energy through faeces was higher (p<0.01) in gilts fed RB. However, the DE and ME conversion efficiency were higher (p<0.01) in gilts fed RB. Therefore, it can be concluded that the digestibility of energy and protein in diets containing rice bran goes on decreasing with the increasing level of fat and fibre, but the metabolizability of the energy and protein was better in pigs fed RB in the diet.

Gentiana straminea supplementation improves feed intake, nitrogen and energy utilization, and methane emission of Simmental calves in northwest China

  • Objective: Native plants can be used as additives to replace antibiotics to improve ruminant feed utilization and animal health. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of Gentiana straminea (GS) on nutrient digestibility, methane emissions, and energy metabolism of Simmental calves. Methods: Thirty-two (5-week-old) male Simmental clves, with initial body weight (BW) of 155±12 kg were fed the same basal diet of concentrates (26%), alfalfa hay (37%), and oat hay (37%) and were randomly separated into four treatment groups according to the amount of GS that was added to their basal diet. The four different groups received different amounts of GS as a supplement to their basal diet during whole experiment: (0 GS) 0 mg/kg BW, the control; (100 GS) 100 mg/kg BW; (200 GS) 200 mg/kg BW; and (300 GS) 300 mg/kg BW. Results: For calves in the 200 GS and 300 GS treatment groups, there was a significant increase in dry matter (DM) intake (p<0.01), average daily gain (ADG) (p<0.05), organic matter intake (p<0.05), DM digestibility (p<0.05), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility (p<0.05), and acid detergent fibre (ADF) digestibility (p<0.05). Dietary GS supplementation result in quadratic increases of DM intake (p<0.01), ADG (p<0.05), NDF intake (p<0.05), and ADF intake (p<0.05). Supplementing the basal diet with GS significantly increased nitrogen (N) retention (p<0.001) and the ratio of retention N to N intake (p<0.001). Supplementing the basal diet with GS significantly decreased methane (CH4) emissions (p<0.01), CH4/BW0.75 (p<0.05) and CH4 energy (CH4-E) (p<0.05). Dietary GS supplementation result in quadratic increases of CH4 (p<0.01) and CH4/DM intake (p<0.01). Compared with 0 GS, GS-supplemented diets significantly improved their gross energy intake (p<0.05). The metabolizable energy and digestive energy intake were significantly greater for calves in the 100 GS and 200 GS calves than for 0 GS calves (p<0.05). Conclusion: From this study, we conclude that supplementing calf diets with GS could improve utilization of feed, energy, and N, and may reduce CH4 emissions without having any negative effects on animal health.

Energy Balance by Carbon and Nitrogen Balance Technique in White Leghorn and Rhode Island Red Hens Fed Maize- and Broken Rice-Based Diets

  • Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) balance technique was used to determine energy balance in Rhode Island Red (RIR) and White Leghorn (WL) laying hens fed maize-and broken rice (BR)- based diets. Carbon and nitrogen intake and outgo were determined for three days on ad libitum fed diets followed by 2/3 of ad libitum intake for next three days. Carbon analysis was done by using four 'U' tubes in which carbon dioxide released during bomb calorimetry was absorbed on drierite in tube 1 and 2 whereas tube 3 and 4 contained sodalime self indicating granule. Carbon in $CO_2$ was determined by an open circuit respiration system. Energy retention (E, kcal) was calculated as E = 12.386 C (g) - 4.631 N (g). By regressing metabolisable energy (ME) intake on energy balance, maintenance ME requirement of RIR was 128 whereas, that of WL hens was $144kcal/kg\;W^{0.75}/d$. Effciency of utilization of ME for maintenance from BR-based diet in RIR hens was equal but in WL hens it was 11% less than maize-based diet.

한국재래산양에 의한 혼파유형별 목초의 이용성 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Herbage Utilization for Mixture Types by Korean Native Goats)

  • 본 연구는 2000년 7월부터 12월까지 충남대학교 생명과학대학 내 부속 환경조절축사에서 수행하였다. 공시된 혼파유형별 목초는 관행 혼파초지(orchardgrass 50+tall fescue 20+perennial ryegrass 10+ Kentucky bluegrass 10+white clover $10\%$), 다초종 혼파초지(orchardgrass 40+tall fescue 20+perennial ryegrass 10+Kentucky bluegrass 10+redtop 10+alfalfa 5+red clover $5\%$) 및 단순 혼파초지(orchardgrass 80+red clover $20\%$)의 3처리를 두어 1999년 9월 7일 경운초지조성 방법에 의해 조성된 기존초지에서 수확한 1번초(4월 20일)를 재래산양에 급여하여 목초의 이용성을 비교 분석하였다. 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 건물섭취량은 다초종 혼파초지(30.2g/BWkg/day)가 관행(26.5g/BWkg/day)이나 단순 혼파초지(26.9/BWkg/day)에 비하여 다소 높은 결과를 보였으나 유의적인 차이는 없었다(p>0.05). 건물소화율과 세포내용물질(cellular constituents)의 소화율은 다초종 혼파초지가 관행이나 단순 혼파초지에 비하여 높은 결과를 보였으나 (p<0.05), NDF와 ADF 소화율은 혼파유형간에 유의적인 차이가 인정되지 않았다(p>0.05). 외관상 생물가는 다초종 혼파초지$(55.1\%)$가 관행 $(54.0\%)$이나 단순 혼파초지$(53.3\%)$에 비하여 높은 편이었으나 유의적인 차이는 인정되지 않았다.(p>0.05). 외관상 대사에너지 축적률은 다초종 혼파초지$(60.2\%)$가 관행$(56.9\%)$이나 단순 혼파초지$(55.9\%)$에 비하여 높았다(p<0.05). 이상의 결과로 보아, 재래산양에 의한 초지 유형별 목초의 질소 및 에너지의 이용성은 대체적으로 다초종 혼파초지가 다른 혼파유형에 비하여 개선되는 결과를 보였다.

Energy Utilization of Growing Chicks in Various Nutritional Conditions

  • For the last two decades, energy utilization of growing chicks has been studied more and more. This paper focuses on the energy utilization estimated by the metabolizable energy (ME) values and the efficiency at which ME is used for growth of chicks under various nutritional environment. Degree of saturation of dietary fats is responsible for nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) of fats. The effect of dietary fat sources on heat production depends on the kind of unsaturated fatty acids as well as the degree of saturation. Medium chain triglyceride shows lower AME and net energy than long chain triglyceride. Phytase as feed additives increases the AME values of the diet along with improvement of the phosphorous utilization. Ostriches have higher ability to metabolize the energy of fiber-rich foodstuffs than fowls. Their higher ability seems to be associated with fermentation of fiber in the hindgut. Proportions of macronutrients in the diets have influenced not only the gain of body protein and energy but also the oxidative phosphorylation of the chicken liver. Essential amino acids deficiency reduces ME/GE (energy metabolizability) little, if any. Growing chicks respond to a deficiency of single essential amino acids with the reduction of energy retained as protein and increased energy retained as fat. Thus, energy retention is proportional to ME intake despite deficiency, and efficiency of ME utilization is not affected by deficiency of amino acids. Effect of oral administration of clenbuterol, a beta-adrenergic agonist, on the utilization of ME varies with the dose of the agents. Although the heat production related to eating behavior has been estimated less than 5% of ME, tube-feeding diets decreases HI by about 30%.

Effect of Potato By-products Based Silage on Rumen Fermentation, Methane Production and Nitrogen Utilization in Holstein Steers

  • The effect of substituting potato by-products based silage (PBS) for concentrates on ruminal fermentation, methane production and nitrogen utilization in Holstein steers was evaluated. Three growing Holstein steers ($490{\pm}19kg$, initial body weight) were used in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square experiment with three experimental diets in which PBS was included at (1) 0, (2) 19 and (3) 27%, on a dry matter basis, replacing concentrates and wheat bran. Increasing replacement levels of PBS slightly increased dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), NDF and ADF intakes by the steers (p<0.05). Inclusion of PBS at 19% increased crude protein (CP) digestibility of the experimental diets compared with the control (p<0.05). Substitution with PBS increased ADF digestibility and nitrogen retention (p<0.05), but did not affect energy retention. Energy loss as methane ranged between 5.0 and 6.1% of the total gross energy intake. There were no significant differences in carbon dioxide and methane production among all PBS levels, while daily methane production numerically increased with PBS inclusion. Substituting PBS for concentrates did not significantly affect ruminal pH and ammonia N concentration. Total VFA concentration, VFA molar proportions and blood metabolites were also unaffected by PBS replacement. These results suggest that substitution of PBS up to 27% of diet dry matter did not significantly increase methane production and was equal or superior to concentrates in ADF digestibility and nitrogen retention for growing steers.

SOME FACTORS INFLUENCING TRI-L-ALANINE DISAPPEARANCE AND RUMEN BACTERIAL GROWTH YIELD IN VITRO

  • A series of in vitro incubation studies with washed rumen bacteria were conducted to determine the influence of incubation time and concentrations of peptides, alanine, ammonia nitrogen and carbohydrate on the rate of peptide disappearance and on bacterial growth. Disappearance rate of tri-alanine (ala3) under various conditions was between 30.6 and $58.2mg\;hr^-$ per gram bacterial dry matter. Ala3 was removed from the incubation medium in an almost linear fashion as incubation time and ala3 concentration was increased. Washed rumen bacteria utilized ala3 faster than di-l-alanine (ala2) at all concentrations. Adding 9mM carbohydrate significantly increased ala3 disappearance, but level of ammonia nitrogen had no influence on ala3 disappearance. The presence of alanine in the medium significantly lowered ala3 utilization by rumen bacteria. Bacterial dry matter and nitrogen growth yield were not influenced by alanine and peptides when incubation medium already contained a sufficient level of ammonia nitrogen. Increased ammonia nitrogen in the presence of ala3 did not stimulate bacterial growth. Carbohydrate significantly increased bacterial dry matter and nitrogen growth as expected. Results indicate that the rate of peptide utilization by rumen bacteria may be altered by type and concentration of peptides, and energy supply, and this may be mediated through changes in numbers and type of bacteria.

유 산양에 의한 몇 가지 건초의 섭취량, 소화율과 질소 및 에너지이용성 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Intake, Digestibility, Nitrogen and Energy Utilization of Some Hay by Dairy Goats (Saanen))

  • 본 연구는 2008년 4월부터 12월까지 충남대학교 생명과학대학 내 부속 환경조절축사에서 수행하였다. 공시된 건초는 수입 Timothy 건초(수입건초), 혼합목건초 (목건초) 및 혼합 야건초(야건초)의 3처리이며 공시가축은 유 산양 (Saanen종, 평균체중 24.2 kg, male) 12두로 화학적 성분, 건물소화율, 건물섭취량과 질소 및 에너지이용성을 비교 분석하였다. 조단백질 함량은 목건초가 야건초나 수입건초에 비하여 높은 결과를 나타내었으나(p<0.05), NDF, ADF, cellulose 및 lignin 함량은 반대로 수입건초와 야건초가 높았다 (p<0.05). 건물 섭취량은 목건초 (30.7 g/BWkg)가 야건초 (24.6 g/BWkg)와 수입건초 (24.4g/BWkg)에 높은 결과를 보였으나 (p<0.05), 야건초와 수입건초 간에 유의적인 차이는 없었다. 건물소화율은 목건초가 69.8%로 야건초(62.2%)와 수입건초 (60.8%)에 높은 결과를 보였다 (p<0.05). 그러나 야건초와 수입건초간에 건물소화율의 유의적인 차이는 없었다. 외관상 생물가는 목건초가 56.0%으로 야건초 (49.2%), 수입건초 (47.7%) 순으로 나타났다 (p<0.05). 외관상 대사에너지 축적률은 목건초가 63.4%로 야건초 (54.4%)나 수입건초 (53.6%)에 비하여 높은 결과를 보였으나 (p<0.05), 역시 야건초와 수입건초 간에 유의적인 차이는 없었다. 이상의 결과로 보아, 유 산양에 의한 건물섭취량, 건물소화율과 질소 및 에너지의 이용성은 목건초가 가장 높았으며, 야건초는 수입건초에 비하여 건물소화율과 외관상 생물가가 높은 것으로 나타났다.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influence of alfalfa supplementation on intake, digestibility nitrogen and energy utilization in Korean native goats fed oak browse. This experiment was conducted by total collection method in laboratory, 1994. Diets included 100% oak bmwse(control), 75% oak browse+ 25% alfalfa and 50% oak browse + 50% alfalfa. Alfalfa supplemented diets were slightly higher CP(PO.O5). lignin (P<0.05) and tannin(P<0.05) contents than those control diets. Increasing levels of alfalfa supplementation, dry matter intake slightly increased, but no differences were observed in all diets. Digestibility for dry matter and cellular constituents showed higher for alfalfa supplemented diets than control diets(P<0.05), but NDF and ADF digestibility were similar for all diets. Alfalfa supplemented diets furnished higher dietary N, apparently digested N and retained N than did the control diets(P<0.05). Consumed energy slightly increased with increasing levels of alfalfa supplementation(P>0.05). DE was high(P<0.05) in alfalfa supplemented diets. but ME was similar for all diets. As above results, oak browse diets alone did not supply N and energy in excess of NRC recommended allowance for goats. Hence, goats fed oak browse with supplementation of protein sources such as alfalfa will be need to provides adequate nutrients.
