  • High AA new high capacity sorbent for preconcentration and determination of nickel in environmental samples was synthesized. The sorbent was synthesized by copolymerization of allyl glaycidyl ether / imminodiacetic acid with N,N-dimethylacrylamide as functional monomers in the presence of N,N-bismethylenacryl amid as cross linker and characterized by Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. A recovery of 93.6% was obtained for the metal ion with 0.1 M, sulfuric acid as the eluting agent. The sorption capacity of the functionalized sorbent was 55.9 $mgg^{-1}$. The equilibrium sorption data of Ni(II) on polymeric sorbent were analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Redlich.Peterson models. Based on equilibrium adsorption data the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin constants were determined 0.87 (L mg-1), 25.87 ($mgg^{-1}$) $(Lmg^{-1})^{1/n}$ and 171.4 ($Jmol^{-1}$) respectively at pH 4.5 and $20^{\circ}C$.

  • Metal coating on ceramic powder has long been attracting interest for various applications such as superconductor where the brittle nature of high temperature ceramic superconductor was complemented by silver coating and metalloceramics where mechanical property improvement was achieved via electroless plating. More recently it has become of great interest in embedded passive device applications since metal coating on ceramic particles may result in the enhancement of the dielectric properties of ceramic-polymer composite capacitors. In our study, nickel ion-containing solution was used for coating commercial capacitor-grade $BaTiO_3$ powder. After filtering process, the powder was dried and heat-treated in 5% forming gas at $900^{\circ}C$. XRD and TEM were utilized for the observation of crystallization behavior and morphology of the particles. It was found that the nickel coating characteristics were strongly dependent on the several parameters and processing variables, such as starting $BaTiO_3$ particle size, nickel source, solution chemistry, coating temperature and time. In this paper, the effects of these variables on the coating characteristics will be presented in some detail.

  • A method is described for the fluorimetric determination of nickel, based on the formation of $Ni(II)-\alpha-(2-Benzimidazolyl)-\alpha'$, $\alpha''$ -(N-5-Nitro-2-Pyridylhydrazone)-toluene complex in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant. The complex has practically no fluorescence in the absence of surfactant, but the addition of Triton X-100 makes possible the fluorimetric determination of low concentrations of Ni(II) as it enhances the fluorescenceintensity of the complex by up to about 5-fold. This method is very sensitive and selectrive for the direct determination of nickel ion. The optimum conditions are a Triton X-100 concentration of 2.0 mL(5.0%, v/v) and pH $9.0\pm0.2(ammonium$ chloride-ammonia buffer). The fluorescence is measured at 337 nm of emission wavelength under 300 nm of excitation wavelength. The fluorescence intensity is a linear function of the concentration of Ni(II) in the range 5-70 ng/mL, and the detection limit is 2.0 nm/mL. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of Ni(II) in food and human hair samples.

  • Petal-like nickel cobaltite ($NiCo_2O_4$)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites with different $rGO-to-NiCo_2O_4$ weight ratios were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method and subsequent thermal treatment. In the $NiCo_2O_4/rGO$ composite, the $NiCo_2O_4$ 3-dimensional nanomaterials contributed to the improvement of electrochemical properties of the final composite material by preventing the restacking of the rGO sheet and securing ion movement passages. The composite structure was examined by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The FE-SEM and TEM images showed that petal-like $NiCo_2O_4$ was supported on the rGO surface. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used for the electrochemical analysis of composites. Among the prepared composites, $0.075g\;rGO/NiCo_2O_4$ composite showed the highest specific capacitance of $1,755Fg^{-1}$ at a current density of $2Ag^{-1}$. The cycle performance and rate capability of the composite material were higher than those of using the single $NiCo_2O_4$ material. These nano-structured composites could be regarded as valuable electrode materials for supercapacitors that require superior performance.

  • In this study, high nickel layered LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries were modified by yttrium doping and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) coating. The effects of yttrium doping and PEDOT:PSS coating on the structural and electrochemical properties of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material were investigated and compared. The substitution of nickel with an electrochemically inert yttrium was confirmed to be successful in stabilizing the layered structure framework. Moreover, coating the surfaces of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 particles with a conductive polymer, PEDOT:PSS, improved the capacity retention, thermal stability, and impedance of the cathode material by increasing its ionic and electric conductivities.

  • The analytical performance of glow discharge mass spectrometer (GD-MS), using a flat type ion source is discussed. The efficiency of ion extraction was maximized at the distance between anode and cathode of 6 mm. At the operation condition of 4 mA, -1000 volt, and 1 mbar for the source, the optimum voltages for sampler and skimmer were40 volt and -280 volt, respectively. The intensities of Cu, Zn, and Mn were increased as a function of square root of current approximately. Korea standard reference materials (KSRM) were tested for an application study. The detection limits of most elements were obtained in the range of several ppm at the optimized operating condition. The peaks of aluminum and chromium were interfered by those of residual gases. The depth profile of nickel coated copper specimens (3, 5, 10 ${\mu}m$ thickness) were obtained by plotting time versus intensities of Ni and Cr after checking the thickness of nickel coated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). At this moment, the sputtering rate of 0.2 ${\mu}m/min$ at the optimum operating condition was determined from the slope of the plot of time to the coating thickness. The roughness spectra of specimen's crater after 16 min, discharge were obtained using a Talysuf5m-120 roughness tester as well.

  • The global energy storage markets have gravitated to high-energy-density and low cost of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as the predominant system for energy storage such as electric vehicles (EVs). High-Ni layered oxides are considered promising next-generation cathode materials for LIBs owing to their significant advantages in terms of high energy density. However, the practical application of high-Ni cathodes remains challenging, because of their structural and surface instability. Although extensive studies have been conducted to mitigate these inherent instabilities, a two-step process involving the synthesis of the cathode and a dry/wet coating is essential. This study evaluates a one-step β-Li2SnO3 layer coating on the surface of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 (NC82) via the thermal segregation of Sn owing to the solubility limit with respect to the synthesis temperature. The doping, segregation, and phase transition of Sn were systematically revealed by structural analyses. Moreover, surface-engineered 5 mol% Sn-coated LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 (NC82_Sn5%) exhibited superior capacity retention compared to bare NC82 owing to the stable surface coating layer. Thus, the developed one-step coating method is suitable for improving the properties of high-Ni layered oxide cathode materials for application in LIBs.

  • Ni-rich cathode materials have been developed as the most promising candidates for next-generation cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries because of their high capacity and energy density. In particular, the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries could be enhanced by increasing the contents of nickel ion. However, there are still limitations, such as low structural stability, cation mixing, low capacity retention and poor rate capability. Herein, we have successfully developed the nanorod-type Ni-rich cathode materials by using co-precipitation method. Particularly, the nanorod-type primary particles of LiNi0.7Co0.15Mn0.15O2 could facilitate the electron transfer because of their longitudinal morphology. Moreover, there were holes at the center of secondary particles, resulting in high permeability of the electrolyte. Lithium-ion batteries using the prepared nanorod-type LiNi0.7Co0.15Mn0.15O2 achieved highly improved electrochemical performance with a superior rate capability during battery cycling.

  • Optimal conditions of electroless nickel plating in acid baths has been studied for industrial applications of a developed EN solution. The phosphorus content in the deposition ranges from 8 to $12\;wt.\%$. The investigated EN plating parameters are ion concentrations of nickel and hypophosphite, concentration of reducing and complexing agent, temperature, and pH. The average plating rate of Ni-P deposition was ca. $14{\mu}m/h$. The EN solution used shows a deposition rate of $10{\mu}m/h$ up to seven metal turnovers.

  • Square planar nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of 14-membered macrocyclic ligands containing various alkyl pendant arms at the uncoordinated nitrogen atoms, 1,8-dipropyl, 1,8-dibutyl, 1,8-bis(2-methylpropyl), 1,8-bis(2-ethylhexyl), and 1,8-dibenzyl-1,3,6,8,10,13-hexaazacyclotetradecane have been prepared from the template condensation of ethylenediamine, formaldehyde, and appropriate primary amines in the presence of the metal ion. The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of these complexes are similar to those of tetraaza macrocyclic complexes and are not affected significantly by the nature of the alkyl groups.
