  • Fine dust is one of the top ten causes of deaths globally. More than 95% of the world's population are endangered by it. However, as the fine dust problem is difficult to address immediately, people should be informed of its risk and prepared to deal with it. This study explores the methods used to define, efficiently provide, and manage the complementary relationships between various types of media providing risk information utilizing the competitive characteristics of media in niche theory. A survey consisting of 348 Korean university students was conducted over 12 days, to analyze three factors: consumer perception of fine dust, media usage, and media use gratification. The response value for media gratification was substituted in the equation to derive the niche breadth, niche overlap, and competitive superiority. It was found that 1) for providing fine dust forecast and fine dust response guidance information, a smartphone application was the most effective; 2) smartphone applications were limited in providing additional information such as the severity and origin of fine dust, and hence, it is necessary to establish the functionality of the Internet and TV to complement smartphone applications. Thus, a system considering the above should be developed.

It adopted the niche theory in analyzing them, avoiding simply comparing the collective average of the two media's gratification. As a result, television turned out to expand broader at niche breadth than the Webcasting and thus presented more diverse functions thar the Webcasting. The niche overlap was investigated with the average of overlapping values. The competition between the two media was rather eased in dimensions of education, culture, and entertainment. And in terms of competitive superiority, the music service sector was the only function that the Webcasting had superiority to television. Upon the results, the Webcasting was absolutely inferior to television in a whole sense. But one thing which requires consideration is that the Webcasting will have functional mergers among genres and thus develop different functions from the corresponding ones of television.

  • It is widely confirmed that online retailers can obtain crucial resources and greater growth potential by depending on the external web portal sites as it is explained in resource dependence theory. Nevertheless, recent studies show that the effect of dependence may not always be beneficial for firms and stress the importance of finding relevant contingent factors. In this study, we identify and suggest that firms' age and niche width strategy, whether generalist or specialist, are contributing factors on moderating the positive relationship between resource dependence and firm growth. To test our hypotheses based on the theory, we have collected monthly web traffic data of online retailers and portals from March 2000 and July 2008. The empirical results lend support to our theory of the firm age having a negative interaction effect on web traffic dependence. Moreover, results verified that positive effect of depending on the portals may become greater if the online retailer is a specialist in terms of niche width.

  • Technology for electric lighting has been evolving from Incandescent Lamp(IL) through Fluorescent Lamp(FL) and currently to Solid State Lighting(SSL) such as LED for more than 130 years of time. However, it took more than 100 years until the transition from IL to FL across overall society. That is because the transition is the Socio-Technical Transition(STT) which involves various social elements. This study investigated and analyzed the theories regarding STT, and applied the Multi-Level Perspective(MLP) theory to the case of electric lighting. A qualitative contents analysis was used with secondary data as research method, and the analyzed result was visualized based on the frame of MLP theory. The STT of electric lighting from IL to FL took place as the order of Technical Niche, Socio-Technical Regime and Landscape. Specifically, in Technical Niche level: Establishing Market Niche, Price-Performance Improvement, Learning Process and Support of Powerful Group took place. In Socio-Technical Regime level: Changes in Social Network, Changes in Technology and Changes in Rules. In Landscape level: Macro-Political Development, Socio-Economic Trends and Macro-Economic Trends took place in consecutive order.
