  • The electrical wire explosion process in liquid media is promising for nano-sized metal and/or alloy particles. The hybrid Pt/Fe-Cr-Al and Pt/Ni-Cr-Fe nanoparticles for exhaust emission control system are synthesized by electrical wire explosion process in liquid media. The alloy powders have spherical shape and nanometer size. According to the wire component, while Pt/Fe-Cr-Al nanoparticles are shown the well dispersed Pt on the Fe-Cr-Al core particle, Pt/Ni-Cr-Fe nanoparticles are shown the partially separated Pt on the Ni-Cr-Fe core particle. Morphologies and component of two kinds of hybrid nano catalyst particles were characterized by transmission electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis.

  • An optimum route to fabricate the ferrous alloy dispersed $Al_2O_3$ nanocomposites such as $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni and $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Co with sound microstructure and desired properties was investigated. The composites were fabricated by the sintering of powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3$ and nano-sized ferrous alloy, in which the alloy was prepared by solution-chemistry routes using metal nitrates powders and a subsequent hydorgen reduction process. Microstructural observation of reduced powder mixture revealed that the Fe-Ni or Fe-Co alloy particles of about 20 nm in size homogeneously surrounded $Al_2O_3$, forming nanocomposite powder. The sintered $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni composite showed the formation of Fe$Al_2O_4$ phase, while the reaction phases were not observed in $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Co composite. Hot-pressed $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni composite showed improved mechanical properties and magnetic response. The properties are discussed in terms of microstructural characteristics such as the distribution and size of alloy particles.

  • As deposited and annealed MTJs with the structure of $Ta(5 nm)/Cu(10 nm)/Ta(5 nm)/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(2 nm)/Cu(5 nm)/ Ir_{25}Mn_{75}(10 nm)/Co_{70}Fe_{30}(2.5 nm)/Al-O/Co_{70}Fe_{30}(2.5nm)/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(t)/Ta(5nm)/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(t)/Ta(5 nm)$, where t=10, 30, 60 and 100 nm were characterized by XRD and magnetic hysteresis loops measurements. The XRD measurements were done in grazing incidence $(GID scan-2{\theta})$ and ${\theta}-2{\theta}$ geometry, by rocking curve $(scan-{\omega})$ and pole figures in order to establish correlation between texture and crystallites size and magnetic parameters of exchange biased and interlayer coupling. The variations of shifting and coercivity field of free and pinned layers after annealing in $300^{\circ}C$ correlate with the improvement of [111] texture and grains size of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ and $Ir_{25}Mn_{75}$ respectively. The exchange biased and the coercivity fields of the pinned layer linearly increased with increasing grain size of $Ir_{25}Mn_{75}$, The reciprocal proportionality between interlayer coupling and coercivity fields of the free layer and grain size of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ was found. The enhancement of interlayer coupling between pinned and free layers, after annealing treatment, indicates on the correlated in-phase roughness of dipolar interacting interfaces due to increase of crystallites size of $Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$.

  • The properties of electrical resistance of Mn-Co-Ni-Fe oxide-based thermistor with various Fe contents in sintering process at $1200^{\circ}$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours in air atmosphere for fabricating thermistor materials were investigated. The results were as follows: all samples showed single cubic spinel crystal structures in all region. The electrical conductivity is the highest thermistor sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. In general when the Fe content is increased except F-2, the resistivity increases and relatively the conductivity decreases. Particularly F-2 composition exhibited the highest electrical conductivity (1.4${\times}$$10^-3$${\textohm}cm) and relatively low B constant(2906K)

  • The magnetic domain walls at the edges of a large patterned and exchanged-biased NiO(10-60 nm)/NiFe(10 nm) bilayers and their motions with applied field were investigated by magnetic force microscopy. Three kinds of domain walls, namely, head-to-head zig-zag and tail-to-tail zig-zag Bloch walls and straight Neel walls were found at specific edges of the unidirectional biased NiO(30 nm)/NiFe(10 nm) bilayer having the exchange biasing field (H$\sub$ex/) of 21 Oe. No walls were observed for the strong exchange-biased bilayer (60 nm NiO, H$\sub$ex/ = 75 Oe), while the amplitude of the zig-zag domain increased with decreasing exchange biasing. This may be explained by mutual restraint between H$\sub$ex/ and the demagnetization field of edge. We similarly investigated the magnetization reversal process, the subsequent motion of the walls and identified the pinning and nucleation sites during reversal.

  • This study has evaluated the weld metal solidification cracking behavior of several Ni base superalloys (Incoloy 825, Inconel 718 and Inconel 600). Austenitic stainless steels(304, 310S) were also included for comparison. In addition, a possible mechanism of solidification cracking in the fusion zone was suggested based on the extensive microstructural examinations with SEM, EDAX, TEM, SADP and AEM. The solidification cracking resistance of Ni base superalloys was found to be far inferior to that of austenitic stainless steels. The solidification cracking of Incoloy 825 and Inconel 718 was believel to be closely related with the Laves-austenite (Ti rich in 825 and Nb rich in 718) and MC-austenite eutectic phases formed along the grain boundaries during solidification. Cracking in Inconel 600 was always found along the grain boundaries which were enriched with Ti and P. Further, solidifidcation cracking resistance was dependent not only upon the type of love melting phases but also on the amount of the phases along the solidification grain boundaries.

  • We have studied local magnetization reversal by laser annealing in exchange biased NiFe/FeMn bilayer. Local magnetization reversal was performed by using the DPSS laser under external magnetic field of 600G. When the laser illuminated the patterned film with the power of above 300 mW during 15 min, a magnetoresistance (MR) curve with symmetric peaks at the opposite field was obtained due to the local reversal of exchange biasing. The direction of exchange anisotropy in the locally reversed region can be restored by local laser annealing under alternating magnetic field, even if its MR peak was reduced by the damage and interdiffusion. The magnetic domain structure of the locally reversed region was measured by MFM. The new domains were generated by laser annealing near the exposed area.

  • Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry was used to investigate magnetization reversal dynamics in 30-nm NiFe/15-nm FeMn, 15-nm FeMn/30-nm CoFe bilayers, and 30-nm NiFe/(2,10)-nm FeMn/30-nm CoFe trilayers. The in-plane magnetization components of each ferromagnetic layer, both parallel and perpendicular to the applied field, were separately determined by measuring the longitudinal and transverse MOKE hysteresis loops from both the front and back sides of the film for an oblique incident s-polarized beam. The magnetization of the FeMn/CoFe bilayer was reversed abruptly and symmetrically through nucleation and domain wall propagation, while that of the NiFe/FeMn bilayer was reversed asymmetrically with a dominant rotation. In the NiFe/FeMn/CoFe trilayers, the magnetic reversal of the two ferromagnetic layers proceeded via nucleation and domain wall propagation for 2-nm FeMn, but via asymmetric rotation for 10-nm FeMn. The exchange-biased ferromagnetic layers showed the magnetization reversal along the same path in the film plane for the decreasing and increasing field branches from transverse MOKE hysteresis loops, which can be qualitatively explained by the theoretical model of the exchange-biased ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic systems.

  • The effect of trace metallic additives on microstructure, glossiness and hardness of Zinc electrodeposits was investigated by using sulfate bath and flow cell system. The preferred orientation of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe additives was (10$\ell$)+(002) mixed texture, while that of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-Cr additives was ( $10\ell$). The preferred orientation of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-X(X:Ni,Co) additives changed from ($10\ell$)+(002) to ($10\ell$) with increasing Mg additive from 5 to 10 g/$\ell$. The surface morphology of the Zinc deposits was closely related to the preferred orientation of the deposits. The glossiness of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe additives was similar to that of pure Zn deposit. The glossiness of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-X(X:Ni,Cr) additives was lower than that of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe additives, while that of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-Co additives was higher than that of Zn-Mg-Fe deposits. The hardness of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-X(Ni,Co,Cr) increased with current density and amount of Mg additive. Hardness of Zn deposits was decreased and increased in comparison with Zn-Mg-Fe deposits for Mg-Fe-Co and Mg-Fe-Cr additives, respectively.

  • The oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) has been shown in pinned $[CoFe/Pt(t_{pt})/CoFe]/IrMn$ multi-layers with perpendicular anisotropy. The period of oscillation corresponds to about 2 monolayers of Pt. The oscillatory behavior of IEC depending on the nonmagnetic metallic Pt thickness is thought to be related the antiferromagnetic ordering induced by IrMn layer. Oscillatory IEC as function of insulating NiO thickness has been observed in $[Pt/CoFe]_4/NiO(t_{NiO})/[CoFe/Pt]_4$ multilayers. The effect of N (number of bilayer repeats) upon the magnetic property of [Pt/CoFe]N/IrMn is also studied.
