  • In this study, thin foil fabrication using Ni/Ni3Al single crystal was performed by cold-rolling. It was found that the cold-rolling behavior was strongly dependent on the initial crystallographic orientation rather than morphology of Ni3Al precipitates. The deformation banding was formed in the case of (100)[001]- and (210)[001]-oriented specimens at 83% reduction in thickness. However, the effects of Ni3Al precipitates morphology on the microstructure evolution of Ni/Ni3Al single crystals during cold-rolling were not so serious comparing with the effects of initial crystallographic orientation. Therefore, it could be concluded that the deformation behavior of Ni/Ni3Al single crystals at serious strain level was strongly dependent on the initial crystallographic orientation rather than the morphology of Ni3Al precipitates, whereas the initial deformation behavior was related to both crystallographic orientation and the morphology of Ni3Al precipitates.

  • High velocity oxy-fuel sprayed NiCoCrAlY coatings were oxidized between 1000 and $1200^{\circ}C$ in air, and the oxide scales were examined by XRD, SEM/EDS, and EPMA. The unoxidized coatings consisted mainly of ${\gamma}$'$-Ni_3$Al, with some ${\gamma}$-Ni. The major oxide formed on the coatings was $\alpha$ $-Al_2$$O_3$. Additionally, (CoCr$_2$$O_4$, $CoAl_2$$O_4$) spinels and $Al_{5}$ $Y_3$$O_{12}$ coexisted. NiO was not found, despite of high amount of Ni in the coating. Below the oxide layer, internally formed $Al_2$$O_3$ existed.

  • Needle-like NiO protecting layers on NiCrAl alloy foam, used as support for hydrogen production, are introduced through electroplated Ni and subsequent microwave annealing. To improve the stability of the NiCrAl alloy foam, oxygen concentration of microwave annealing to form a needle-like NiO layer with good chemical stability and corrosion resistance is controlled in a range of 20 and 50 %. As the oxygen concentration increases to 50 %, needle-like NiO forms a dense coating layer on the NiCrAl alloy foam; this layer formation can be attributed to accelerated growth of the (200) plane. In addition, the increased oxygen concentration causes increased NiO/Ni ratio of the resultant coating layer on NiCrAl alloy foam due to improved rate of the oxidation reaction. As a result, the introduction of dense needle-like NiO layers formed at 50 % oxygen concentration improves the chemical stability of the NiCrAl alloy foam by protecting the direct electrochemical reaction between the electrolyte and the foam. Thus, needle-like NiO can be proposed as a superb protecting layer to improve the chemical stability of NiCrAl alloy form.

  • The catalytic yields of POM to hydrogen over M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) were investigated using a fixed bed flow reactor under atmosphere. The crystal phase behavior of reduced La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalysts before and after the reaction were studied via XRD analysis. FESEM and EDS analyses were further performed to show the uniformed distribution of La, Ni, and Ce metal particles on the catalyst surface. XPS results showed O2-, O22- species and metal ions such as Ce3+, Ce4+, La3+ and Ni2+ etc. were on the catalyst surface. When 1 wt% of La was added to Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalyst, Ni2p3/2 and Ce3d5/2 increased 52.7 and 6.3%, respectively. The yield of hydrogen on the La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 catalyst was 89.1%, which was much better than that of M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = Ce, Y). As Ce4+ ions of CeO2 produced by the reaction of AlCeO3 with oxygen were substitute to La3+, it made oxygen vacancies in the lattice and further improved the hydrogen yield by increasing the dispersion of Ni atoms with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect.

  • Graphene/Ni-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) hybrid materials were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. Hexagonal Ni-Al LDH particles nucleated and grew on graphene sheets, thus preventing restacking of the graphene sheets and aggregation of the Ni-Al LDH nanoparticles upon drying. Electrode made from the graphene/Ni-Al LDH hybrid materials showed a substantial improvement in electrochemical capacitance relative to those made with pure Ni-Al LDH nanoparticles. In addition, the graphene/Ni-Al LDH hybrid composite materials showed remarkable stability after 4000 cycles with over 100% capacitance retention. These materials are thus very promising for use in electrochemical capacitor electrodes.

  • Mechanical properties and microstructures of the Ni-AI-Fe and Ni-AI-Fe-(B, Zr) alloys which containing $10{\sim}30at$.%Fe, 0.1at.%B and/or 0.1at.%Zr have been investigated. The experimental results showed that the microstructures of Ni25Al were changed from a single phase ${\gamma}$ to dual phase ${\gamma}$ and ${\beta}$ by addition of 27at.%Fe. Ni45Al, however, kept the single ${\beta}$ phase even though Fe was added upto 30at.%. The hardness of Ni25Al were increased from $H_RB$ 70 to $H_RC$ 39 by addition of 27at.%Fe. In the case of Ni45Al which have $H_RC$ 37, the hardness was decreased by lOat.%Fe addition, but increased with 30at.%Fe. The yield strength and ultimate compressive strength in the compressive test have showed a similar trend with the hardness change. The strain to fracture was 14% at maximum and achieved in Ni25Al-27at.%Fe and Ni25Al-27at.%Fe-0.1 at.%B alloys. The Ni45Al showed a relatively low strain to fracture as 4%. The impact absorption energy of Ni25Al increased from 0.74 kg-m to 1.81 kg-m by addition of 27at.%Fe. In case of Ni45Al, the addition of lOat.%Fe and lOat.%Fe with small amounts of Band Zr did not change significantly the impact absorption energy of 0.60 kg-m, whereas the addition of 30at.%Fe with small amounts of B and Zr increased it slightly. In fracture tests, both of two basic materials showed the same intergranular fracture but by adding Fe it changed to the cleavage fracture mode or co-existing of cleavage and intergranular fractures.

  • Ni/Ti/Al multilayer system ('/'denotes the deposition sequence) was tested for low-resistance ohmic contact formation to Al-implanted p-type 4H-SiC. Ni 30 nm / Ti 50 nm / Al 300 nm layers were sequentially deposited by e-beam evaporation on the 4H-SiC samples which were implanted with Al (norminal doping concentration = $4\times10^{19}cm^{-3}$) and then annealed at $1700^{\circ}C$ for dopant activation. Rapid thermal anneal (RTA) temperature for ohmic contact formation was varied in the range of $840\sim930^{\circ}C$. Specific contact resistances were extracted from the measured current vs. voltage (I-V) data of linear- and circular transfer length method (TLM) patterns. In constrast to Ni contact, Ni/Ti/Al contact shows perfectly linear I-V characteristics, and possesses much lower contact resistance of about $2\sim3\times10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm^2$ even after low-temperature RTA at $840^{\circ}C$, which is about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of Ni contact. Therefore, it was shown that RTA temperature for ohmic contact formation can be lowered to at least $840^{\circ}C$ without significant compromise of contact resistance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the existence of intermetallic compounds of Ni and Al as well as $NiSi_{1-x}$, but characteristic peaks of $Ti_{3}SiC_2$, a probable narrow-gap interfacial alloy responsible for low-resistance Ti/Al ohmic contact formation, were not detected. Therefore, Al in-diffusion into SiC surface region is considered to be the dominant mechanism of improvement in conduction behavior of Ni/Ti/Al contact.

  • High temperature oxidation behavior of thermal barrier coating (TBC) system (IN738 substrate + NiCoCrAlY or NiAl bond coat with or without Pt + yttria stabilized zirconia) prepared by air plasma spray (APS) process has been studied in order to understand the effect of Pt addition to bond coat on the stability of TBC system. Specimens were oxidized in thermal cycling and isothermal oxidation test at $1100^{\circ}C$. The Pt addition in TBC system with NiCoCrAlY bond coat showed a longer life time compared to that without addition of Pt. Pt addition to TBC system is believed to help the formation of more stable thermally grown oxide, $Al_2O_3$, at the TBC/bond coat interface, leading to a longer lifetime of TBC system.
