Ni-GDC (gadolinia-doped ceria) composite powders, the anode material for the application of solid oxide fuel cells, were prepared by a solution reduction method using hydrazine. The distribution of Ni particles in the composite powders was homogeneous. The Ni-GDC powders were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h and then reduced at $800^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in 3% $H_2$. The percolation limit of Ni of the sintered composite was 20 vol%, which was significantly lower than these values in the literature (30-35 vol%). The marked decrease of percolation limit is attributed to the small size of the Ni particles and the high degree of dispersion. The hydrazine method suggests a facile chemical route to prepare well-dispersed Ni-GDC composite powders.
It has been considered to apply GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1-X}$) for low-temperature SOFC electrolytes because it has higher ionic conductivity than YSZ at low temperature. However, open circuit voltage with using GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1-X}$) electrolyte in SOFCs, becomes lower than using YSZ (8 mol% Yttria stabilized Zirconia) electrolyte because GDC has electronic conductivity. In this work, the effect of changing GDC electrolyte thickness on the open circuit voltage has been investigated. Ni-GDC anode-supported unit cells were fabricated as follows. Mixed NiO-GDC powders were pressed and pre-sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. And then, GDC electrolyte material was dip-coated on the anode and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$. Finally the LSCF-GDC cathode material was screen-printed on the electrolyte and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$. Electrolyte thickness was controlled by the number of dip-coating times. Open circuit voltage was measured depending on electrolyte thickness at $650^{\circ}C$ and found that the thicker GDC electrolyte was, the better OCV was.
Nano-sized gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC)/nickel particle-dispersed $La_ySr_{1-y}Ti_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ (LSFTO)-based composite solid oxide fuel cell anodes were fabricated by an infiltration method and the effects of the GDC/Ni nanoparticles on the anode polarization resistance and cell performance were investigated in terms of the infiltration time and nickel content. The anodic polarization resistance of the LSFTO anode was significantly enhanced by GDC and/or Ni infiltration and it decreased with increasing infiltration time and Ni content, respectively. It is believed that the observed phenomena are associated with enhancement of the ionic conductivity and catalytic activity in the nanocomposite anodes by the addition of GDC and Ni. Power densities of cells with the LSFTO and LSFTO-GDC/Ni nanocomposite anodes were 150 and $300mW/cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Among the Ruddlesden-Popper series, $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$ has received widespread attention as a promising cathode material by reason of its favorable properties for realizing high performance of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$ cathode is prepared using the facile sol-gel method by employing tri-blockcopolymer (F127) to obtain a single phase in a short sintering time. There are no reactions between the $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$ cathode and the $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-\delta}$ (GDC) electrolyte upon sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$, indicating that the $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$ cathode has good chemical compatibility with the GDC electrolyte. The maximum electrical conductivity of $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$ reaches approximately 240 S $cm^{-1}$ at $100^{\circ}C$ and gradually decreases with increasing temperaturein air atmosphere. The area specific resistance value of $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$ composite with 40 wt% GDC is $0.435{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. These data allow us to propose that the $La_4Ni_3O_{10}$-GDC composite cathode is a good candidate for IT-SOFC applications.
The doped-ceria is a strong candidate material for an intermediate temperature SOFC. However, the mechanical strength and the magnitude of electrical conductivity need to be increased at low sintering temperature. In this study, to improve both properties, $1at\% $ of Mg, Ca, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, and Zr were added to the GDC20 ($20at\%$ Gd-doped Ceria) and sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ that is $250^{\circ}C$ lower than $1600^{\circ}C$. With addition, the relative density of the sintered sample increased. Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga doped-GDC20 showed high relative density over $92\%$. Among them, Ga doped-GDC20 showed the most improved sinterability. The conductivity of dopedGDC20 increased by $\~10$ times at $300\~700^{\circ}C$.
Mixed ionic and electronic conducting $K_2NiF_4$-type oxide, $Nd_{2-x}Sr_xNiO_{4+\delta}$ (x = 0, 0.4, 0.6) powders were synthesized by a solid-state reaction technique and solid oxide fuel cells consisting of a $Nd_{2-x}Sr_xNiO_{4+\delta}-GDC$ cathode, a Ni-YSZ anode and 8YSZ as an electrolyte were fabricated. The effect of strontium substitution for neodymium on the electrical and electrochemical properties was examined. The electrical conductivity increased with an increase in the Sr doping content, while it appears that the excess oxygen (${\delta}$) decreased. Sr doping into $Nd_2NiO_{4+\delta}$ resulted in an increase in the cathode polarization resistance and an decrease in the power density of the cell. These phenomena may be associated with the decreased amount of excess oxygen noted in the $Nd_{2-x}Sr_xNiO_{4+\delta}$ cathode.
The performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is directly related to the electrocatalytic activity of composite electrodes in which triple phase boundaries (TPBs) of metallic catalyst, oxygen ion conducting support, and gas should be three-dimensionally maximized. The distribution morphology of catalytic nanoparticle dispersed on external surfaces is of key importance for maximized TPBs. Herein in situ grown nickel nanoparticle onto the surface of fluorite oxide is demonstrated employing gadolium-nickel co-doped ceria ($Gd0.2-xNixCe0.8O2-{\delta}$, GNDC) by reductive annealing. GNDC powders were synthesized via a Pechini-type sol-gel process while maximum doping ratio of Ni into the cerium oxide was defined by X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, NiO-GNDC composite were screen printed on the both sides of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) pellet to fabricate the symmetrical half cells. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that the polarization resistance was decreased when it was compared to conventional Ni-GDC anode and this effect became greater at lower temperature. Ex situ microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy after the reductive annealing exhibited the exsolution of Ni nanoparticles on the fluorite phases. The influence of Ni contents in GNDC on polarization characteristics of anodes were examined by EIS under H2/H2O atmosphere. Finally, the addition of optimized GNDC into the anode functional layer (AFL) dramatically enhanced cell performance of anode-supported coin cells.

Yttria-stablized zirconia (YSZ) is the most commonly used electrolyte material, but the reduction in working temperature leads to insufficient ionic conductivity. Ceria based electrolytes (GDC) are more attractive in terms of conductivity at low temperature, but these materials are well known to be reducible at very low oxygen partial pressure. The reduction of electrolyte resistivity is necessary to overcome cell performance losses. So, thin YSZ/GDC bilayer technology seems suitable for decreasing the electrolyte resistance at lower operating temperatures. Bilayer electrolytes composed of a galdolinium-doped $CeO_2$ ($Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95}$, GDC) layer and yttria-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) layer with various thicknesses were deposited by RF sputtering and E-beam evaporation. The bilayer electrolytes were deposited between porous Ni-GDC anode and LSM cathode for anode-supported single cells. Thin film structure and surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), using $CuK{\alpha}$-radiation in the range of 2ce morphol$^{\circ}C$. The XRD patterns exhibit a well-formed cubic fluorite structure, and sharp lines of XRD peaks can be observed, which indicate a single solid solution. The morphology and size of the prepared particles were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The performance of the cells was evaluated over $500{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, using humidified hydrogen as fuel, and air as oxidant.
Scandia ($Sc2O_3$)-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) electrolyte-supported symmetrical solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs), in which lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF)-gadolinia ($Gd_2O_3$)-doped ceria (GDC) composite materials are used as both the cathode and anode, were fabricated and their high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) performance was investigated. Current density-voltage curves were obtained for cells operated in 10% $H_2O$/90% Ar at 750, 800, and $850^{\circ}C$. It was possible to determine the ohmic, cathodic, and anodic contributions to the total overpotential using the three-electrode technique. The HTSE performance was significantly improved in the symmetrical cell with LSCF-GDC electrodes compared to the cell consisting of an Ni-YSZ cathode and LSCF-GDC anode. It was found that the overpotential due to the LSCF-GDC cathode largely decreased and, at a given current density, the total cell voltage decreased, which resulted in the enhanced hydrogen production rate in the symmetrical cell.
