  • TiNi shape memory alloy was shape memory heat-treated and investigated its mechanical properties with the variation of prestrain. Also 6061 Al matrix composites with TiNi shape memory alloy fiber as reinforcement have been fabricated by Permanent Mold Casting to investigate the microstructures and interface properties. Yield stress of TiNi wire was the most high in the case of before heat-treatment and then decreased as increasing heat-treatment time. In each heat-treatment condition, the yield stress of TiNi wire was not changed with increasing the amount of prestrain. The interface bonding of TiNi/6061Al composite was fine. There was a 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness of diffusion reaction layer at the interface. We could find out that this diffusion reaction layer was made by the mutual diffusion. The diffusion rate from Al base to TiNi wire was faster than that of reverse diffusion and the amount of the diffusion was also a little more than that of reverse.

  • Three types of structural intermetallic compounds, $Ni_3Al$, NiAl and TiAl, having each single phase structure without pores were produced by arc-melting process. Their sliding wear properties were investigated against a hardened tool steel. It was shown that the wear of the intermetallic compounds was hardly occurred against the hardened tool steel. TiAl compound showed the best wear resistance among them. In this case, wear was preferentially occurred on the surface of the hardened tool steel of the mating material which has higher hardness. It could be found that the wear mode on intermetallics without pores by arc-melting process was different from that on its porous layer coated on steel by combustion synthesis.

  • The effects of the carbon content ranging from 17.5 to 21.0 wt.% in TiC-30vol.% $Ni_3Al$ cenmet and the $Mo_2C$ content raging from 0 to 30 wt.% in TiC-20 vol.% $Ni_3Al$ cermet were investigated in the relation to the microstures and harbness. The speciment were sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$, 143$0^{\circ}C$ and 145$0^{\circ}C$ for 60minutes. The results were summarized as follows; 1) The shrinkages and relative densitites of the specimens were incrased up to 20.0 wt.% C and then decreased. 2) The grains of TiC were almost the same size with the different content of carbon. Free carbons were appeared on the microstrures when carbon was added over 20.5 wt.% while TiC and $Ni_3Al$l were formed when carbon was added below 20.0 wt.%; 3) The lattice parameters of the $Ni_3Al$ and TiC phases were increased up to 20.5 wt.% C, and then saturated. 4) The hardess was increased up to 20.0 wt.% C, and then decreased. 5) The $Mo_2C$ made the TiC grains fine and the surrounding structure around TiC gains. 6) The micropores were decreased with increasing the binder and the sintering temperature. 7) The lattice parameter of the $Ni_3Al$l ana TiC were almost the samp up to 10 wt.% $Mo_2C$ and then decreased. 8) The hatdness was increased up to 5wt.% $Mo_2C$ and then decreased owing to the micrpores. 9) The more the binder phase, the higher the relative density and the proper $Mo_2C$ amount of $TiC-Ni_3Al$ cermets were obtained.

  • The 1.6 vol% and 2.5 vol% TiNi/6061Al composites were fabricated by permanent mold casting for investigating the effect of heat treatment on tensile strength for composites. The tensile strength without T6 treatment at 293 K was increased with increasing the volume fraction of TiNi fiber and at 363 K the higher the pre-strain, the higher the tensile strength. The tensile strength of the composite with $T_{6}$ treatment at 293 K was found to increase with increasing both the amount of pre-strain and the volume fraction of TiNi fiber and was higher than that without $T_{6}$ treatment. It should be noted that the tensile strength 2.5vol%TiNi/6061Al composites rolled at a 38% reduction ratio was the maximum value of 298 MPa. The tensile strength of composites decreased with increasing the reduction ratio over 38% because of the rupture of TiNi fiber.

  • Ni$_3$Al intermetallic compound has been tested as a binder phase, in order to improve the oxidation resistance and the mechanical properties of TiC-Ni cermet at a high temperature. The wettability of $Ni_3Al$ on TiC and the optimum sintering condition were investigated in TiC-(30, 40) vol% $Ni_3Al$ cermets with the sintering temperature (1380~$1430^{\circ}C$) and time (30~99 min). The results are summarized as follows: 1) Ni$_3$Al showed good wettability on TiC above 1400$^{\circ}C$ ; 2) The shrinkages of the specimens increased with the sintering temperature, the sintering time and the binder content, whereas the relative densities were decreased; 3) Any other phase did not appeared in the microstructures of all sintered cermets. The grain sizes of TiC became larger as the sintering temperature and the sintering time as well as the binder content increased; 4) The hardness of the cermets decreased with increase in the sintering temperature and the sintering time as well as the binder content; 5) The transverse-rupture strength of the cermets increased with the sintering temperature and the sintering time, whereas it decreased with the binder content.

  • The effect of carbon addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallic alloys have been characterized. It is shown that carbon is not only an efficient solid solution strengthener in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl, it is also an efficient precipitation strengthener by fine dispersion of carbide. Transmission electron microscope investigation has been performed on the particle-dislocation interactions in $Ni_3Al$ and TiAl intermetallics containing various types of fine precipitates. In an $L1_2$-ordered $Ni_3Al$ alloy with 4 mol.% of chromium and 0.2~3.0 mol.% of carbon, fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ type carbide, which has the cube-cube orientation relationship with the matrix, appear during aging. Typical Orowan loops are formed in $Ni_3Al$ containing fine dispersions of $M_{23}C_6$ particles. In the L10-ordered TiAl containing 0.1~2.0 mol.% carbon, TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$ matrix, appear in the matrix and preferentially at dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns analyses have shown that the needle-shaped precipitate is $Ti_3AlC$ of perovskite type. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_3AlC$ and the $L1_0$ matrix is found to be $(001)_{Ti3AlC}//(001)_{L10\;matrix}$ and $[010]_{Ti3AlC}//[010]_{L10\;matrix}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer period at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlC$ with a hexagonal structure are formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$ matrix. The orientation relationship between the $(0001)_{Ti2AlC}//(111)_{L10\;matrix}$ is and $[1120]_{Ti2AlC}//[101]_{L10\;matrix}$. High temperature strength of TiAl increases appreciably by the precipitation of fine carbide. Dislocations bypass the carbide needles at further higher temperatures.
