A stochastic rainfall model, NSRPM (Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model), is able to reflect the cluster characteristics of rainfall events which is unable in the RPM (Rectangular Pulse Model). Therefore NSRPM has advantage in the hydrological applications. The NSRPM consists of five model parameters and the parameters are estimated using optimization techniques such as DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method and genetic algorithm. However the DFP method is very sensitive in initial values and is easily converge to local minimum. Also genetic algorithm has disadvantage of long computation time. Nelder-Mead method has several advantages of short computation time and no need of a proper initial value. In this study, the applicability of parameter estimation methods was evaluated using rainfall data of 59 national rainfall networks from 1973-2011. Overall results demonstrated that accuracy in parameter estimation is in the order of Nelder-Mead method, genetic algorithm, and DFP method.
This study, a point rainfall process model, which could represent appropriately observed rainfall data, was to select. The point process models-rectangular pulses Poisson process model(RPPM), Neyman-Scott rectangular pulses Poisson process model(NS-RPPM), and modified Neyman-Scott rectangular pulses Poisson process model(modified NS-RPPM)-all based on Poisson process were considered as possible rainfall models, whose statistical analyses were performed with their simulation rainfall data. As results, simulated rainfall data using the NS-RPPM and the modified NS-RPPM represent appropriately statistics of observed data for several aggregation levels. Also, simulated rainfall data using the modified NS-RPPM shows similar characteristics of rainfall occurrence to the observed rainfall data. Especially, the modified NS-RPPM reproduces high-intensity rainfall events that contribute largely to occurrence of natural harzard such as flood and landslides most similarly. Also, the modified NS-RPPM shows the best results with respect to the total rainfall amount, duration, and inter-event time. In conclusions, the modified NS-RPPM was found to be the most appropriate model for the long-term simulation of rainfall.

Accurate inference of parameters of a stochastic rainfall generation model is essential to improve the applicability of the rainfall generation model which modeled the rainfall process and the structure of rainfall events. In this study, the model parameters of a stochastic rainfall generation model, NSRPM (Neyman-Scott rectangular pulse model), were estimated using DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell), GA (genetic algorithm), Nelder-Mead, and DE (differential evolution) methods. Summer season hourly rainfall data of 20 rainfall observation sites within the Nakdong river basin from 1973 to 2017 were used to estimate parameters and the regional applicability of inference methods were analyzed. Overall results demonstrated that DE and Nelder-Mead methods generate better results than that of DFP and GA methods.
In this study, rainfall data with various temporal scales (3-, 6-, 12-, 24-hr) are disaggregated into 1-hourly rainfall data to evaluate the performance of rainfall disaggregation technique. The rainfall disaggregation technique is based on a database generated by the stochastic point rainfall model, the Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model (NSRPM). Performance evaluation is carried out using July rainfall data of Ulsan, Changwon, Busan and Milyang weather stations in Korea. As a result, the rainfall disaggregation technique showed excellent performance that can consider not only the major statistics of rainfall but also the spatial correlation. It also indirectly shows the uncertainty of future climate change scenarios with daily temporal scale. The rainfall disaggregation technique is expected to disaggregate the future climate change scenarios, and to be effective in the future watershed management.

A multidimensional representation for precipitation, given In the theory proposed by E. Waymire et al. (1984), is used for simulating rainfall in space and time. The model produces moving storms with realistic meso-scale meteorological features in time and space. The first- and second-order statistics derived from observed JX)int gauge data were used to estimate the model parameters based on the Nelder-Mead algorithm of optimization. Then twelve-year traces of rainfall intensities at fixed gage stations were generated at intervals of 1 hours. First- and second-order statistics are evaluated from the above series, which are used for estimating the parameters of one dimensional model of temporal rainfall at a point. As a result from the comparisons of one dimensional model parameters used observed and generated data from multidimensional model, we found that the multidimensional rainfall model generated visually realistic spatial patterns of rainfall as well as realistic temporal hyetographs of rainfall at a point. point.

In this study, new stochastic point rainfall models which can consider the correlation structure between rainfall intensity and duration are developed. In order to consider the negative and positive correlation simultaneously, the Gumbels type-II bivariate distribution is applied, and for the cluster structure of rainfall events, the Neyman-Scott cluster point process is selected. In the theoretical point of view, it is shown that the models considering the dependent structure between rainfall intensity and duration have slightly heavier tail autocorrelation functions than the corresponding independent mode]s. Results from generating long time rainfall events show that the dependent models better reproduce historical rainfall time series than the corresponding independent models in the sense of autocorrelation structures, zero rainfall probabilities and extreme rainfall events.
It is recommended to use long-term hydrometeorological data for more than the service life of the hydraulic structures and water resource planning. For the purpose of expanding rainfall data, stochastic simulation models, such as Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (BLRP) and Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse (NSRP) models, have been widely used. The optimal parameters of the model can be estimated by repeatedly comparing the statistical moments defined through a combination of parameters of the probability distribution in the optimization context. However, parameter estimation using relatively small observed rainfall statistics corresponds to an ill-posed problem, leading to an increase in uncertainty in the parameter estimation process. In addition, as shown in previous studies, extreme values are underestimated because objective functions are typically defined by the first and second statistical moments (i.e., mean and variance). In this regard, this study estimated the parameters of the NSRP model using the objective function with the third moment and compared it with the existing approach based on the first and second moments in terms of estimation of extreme rainfall. It was found that the first and second moments did not show a significant difference depending on whether or not the skewness was considered in the objective function. However, the proposed model showed significantly improved performance in terms of estimation of design rainfalls.
