Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), A Key Tool to open the Personalized Medicine Era

  • Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a term that means post-Sanger sequencing methods with high-throughput sequencing technologies. NGS parallelizes the sequencing process, producing thousands or millions of sequences at once. The latest NGS technologies use even single DNA molecule as a template and measures the DNA sequence directly via measuring electronic signals from the extension or degradation of DNA. NGS is making big impacts on biomedical research, molecular diagnosis and personalized medicine. The hospitals are rapidly adopting the use of NGS to help to patients understand treatment with sequencing data. As NGS equipments are getting smaller and affordable, many hospitals are in the process of setting up NGS platforms. In this review, the progress of NGS technology development and action mechanisms of representative NGS equipments of each generation were discussed. The key technological advances in the commercialized platforms were presented. As NGS platforms are a great concern in the healthcare area, the latest trend in the use of NGS and the prospect of NGS in the future in diagnosis and personalized medicine were also discussed.

  • The U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Cycle Technologies R&D program under the Office of Nuclear Energy is working to advance technologies to enhance both the existing and future fuel cycles. One thrust area is in developing enabling technologies for next generation nuclear materials management under the Materials Protection, Accounting and Control Technologies (MPACT) Campaign where advanced instrumentation, analysis and assessment methods, and security approaches are being developed under a framework of Safeguards and Security by Design. An overview of the MPACT campaign's activities and recent accomplishments is presented along with future plans.

  • In this study, it has been attempted to build up a smart, stable, and integrated Next-generation Home Network (NHN) system capable of supporting more comfortable and convenient life in the future human housing domains, and to find out which institutional tasks are required to activate the related industries. Additionally, this study aims to review a variety of technologies suggested so far in several fields including information and communications, appliance, and building maintenance. This paper analyzes the advantages and disadvantages, acceptance structure and problems of standard technologies and it suggests the political methods and policies to embody them most effectively and integrally in the future. The said certification system is called 'Standardized Certification System for Korean-style Next-generation Home Network Buildings'(abbreviated to K-NHN) as a new system created for the purpose of developing, more effectively, NHN to be introduced in the future.

차세대 이동통신 컨버전스 서비스 모델 개발 프레임워크 (Design Framework for Next Generation Mobile Convergence Service Models)

  • It is expected that the next generation mobile communication system will be a service-driven developed system capable to realize the human-centric mobile convergence services. and it is different from the technology-driven development approach of the second and the third generation mobile communication systems. As a preliminary research work on such service-driven system development approach for the next generation mobile communication system. we developed the scenario based service analysis process (2SAP) framework to derive core service technologies and functionalities. In this paper. we propose the next generation mobile convergence service business model creation methodology based on research results of the 2SAP framework. To achieve this goal, we first establish a service model contains several components such as infrastructures. operations. and provision of services that are indispensible for providing next generation mobile services. Then, the next generation mobile services and its corresponding business models can be created by adding service and value flows to the developed service model after defining necessary components of business model including actors, their relationships, and roles.

  • In this paper, we have developed a technology-service relationship model which describes the diffusion process of a group of services and relevant technologies, and have applied the developed model to the prediction of the number of subscribers to the next generation mobile service. The technology-service relationship model developed in this paper incorporates the developing process of relevant technologies, a supply-side factor, into the diffusion process of specific services, while many diffusion models and multi-generation diffusion models in previous researches are mainly reflect the demand-side factors. So, the proposed model could effectively applied to the telecommunication services where the developing of the relevant technologies are very essential to the service penetration. In our application, the proposed model provides a competitive substitution between the next generation mobile service and the traditional mobile service.

  • Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are essential parts of power system which employ a wide range of computers and communication technologies. The traditional SCADA system is mainly for information exchange in only one company, and the information is provided only to the operator or administrator. But in the deregulated environment, we need much more information, which can be exchanged among different companies. With the rapid development of internet, we can use it to access information easily. This paper proposes web technologies to be applied in power system in order to display some important information through accessing data from database, and to realize the real time control of the substation. The functions of SCADA system will be implemented by a set of Web-based components. The monitoring and control of standard 154[kV] substation model is already realized in the laboratory test. The Web-based SCADA system is able to provide sufficient information and control for pow or system through an efficient and economical way.

21세기 유럽의 회전익 개발 동향 분석 (Development of European Rotorcraft in 21st Century)

  • 저자의 이전 논문[1]에서 저자는 미국과 유럽의 회전익기 개발의 현황을 비교하였다. 본 논문에서는 미국에 경쟁적이 우위를 차지하기 위한 21세기를 대비하는 유럽의 회전익 기술개발 현황에 대한 좀 더 구체적으로 조사해 보고자 한다. 유럽은 21세기 초 회전익을 포함한 항공 사업을 효율적이며 조직적으로 운영하기 위해 범 유럽단위의 "ACARE"라는 비관료기관을 설립하였고, 이 조직을 중심으로 유럽연합에서 지원하는 전체 유럽의 차세대 항공사업 R&D 프로그램이 효율적이고 경쟁적이기 위한 의제를 설정하였다. 회전익기 분야의 개발에 대한 과정은 다음과 같다. 1) 객실의 소음/진동 절감(FRIENDCOPTER), 2) 회전익의 효율증가와 회전익에서 유도되는 소음 절감을 위한 핵심 기술의 개발(GRC), 그리고 최근에 시작된 고속/장거리 운행을 위한 차세대 회전익 개발(Fast Rotorcraft). 앞에서 언급하였듯이 이 모든 모든 R&D 프로그램들은 기본 연구 의제, 특히 환경 영향에 대한 요구조건을 만족하여야만 한다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 유럽 회전익 사업은 현재와 미래에서의 시장 점유에 성공적인 업적을 이루었을 뿐 아니라 시장의 요구(고속/장거리운행)를 만족하는 차세대 회전익기인 복합형/tiltrotor 형상의 개발에도 충분한 준비를 하게 되었다.

Performance Analysis on Strongest Channel Gain User for Intelligent Reflecting Surface NOMA

  • Recently, fifth generation (5G) networks are being deployed in phases all over the world, the paradigm has shifted to developing the next generation wireless technologies, which have grown exponentially in last few decades, wireless networks are promising for the demand to enormous connections. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) are considered as the key technoloies for next-generation beyond 5G (B5G) and sixth generation (6G) networks, in which IRS can play an important advance in the wireless propagation environment, and NOMA can effectively increase massive connectivity to improve user fairness. In this paper, we analyze a performance on the strongest channel user in terms of achievable data rates numerically. Then, with the achievable data rates, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain is calculated for the IRS-NOMA network over the conventional NOMA network. As a consequence, IRS-NOMA schemes have been considered as some key technologies.

Next Generation Networks에서의 단대단 성능 보장형 인입제어 (An Admission Control for End-to-end Performance Guarantee in Next Generation Networks)

  • Next Generation Networks(NGN)는 IP 기반 멀티서비스, multi-access 네트워크로 정의할 수 있다. 여러 종류의 서비스와 access기술이 공존함에 따라 access 네트워크나 코어 네트워크에서의 다양한 전송기술 채택이 NGN의 자연스러운 진화의 방향으로 자리 잡았다. Differentiated Services (DiffServ)와 Multi-protocol Label Switching(MPLS), 혹은 이들이 혼합된 형태의 전송기술들이 복합된 전송 네트워크를 통과하는 플로우들은 통합과 분리를 반복해서 경험하게 된다. 본 연구에서는 이런 환경 하에서 플로우의 단대단 (End-to-end) 지연시간 최대치를 구하는 방법을 제시한다. 이 방법은 네트워크 간 통합플로우에 관한 정보, 특히 각 네트워크에서의 통합플로우별 최대 인입 burst size 값을 교환하는 것을 가정한다. 이를 기반으로, 요청된 단대단 성능 요구를 만족하는지를 판별하고 admission 여부를 정하는 기준을 제시한다. 더 나아가 몇 가지의 실제상황에 가까운 시나리오를 가지고 simulation하여 이 기준을 평가해 본다.
