  • An optimizer has been applied for the optimal design of pipe diameters in the pipe flow network problems. Pipe network flow analysis, which is developed separately, is performed within the interface for the optimization algorithm. A pipe network is chosen for the test, and optimizer GenOpt is applied with Holder-Mead-O'Niell's simplex algorithm after solving the network flow problem by the Newton-Raphson method. As a result, optimally do-signed pipe diameters are successfully obtained which minimize the total design cost. Design cost of pipe flow network can be considered as the sum of pipe installation cost and pump operation cost. In this study, a practical and efficient solution method for the pipe network optimization is presented. Test system is solved for the demonstration of the present optimization technique.

  • A new algorithm for power system stability calculations is developed which considers the nonlinear state equations of 8 state variables for each generator dynamics, expollential load models in respect to bus voltages for nonlinear loads, network equations expressed in terms of bus-injected current sources, various kinds of generator and transmission line outages, abrupt changes in loads, and operations of various kinds of portective relaying systems such as distance relaying, reclosing load shedding by under-frequency relays. In the algorithm are included efficient and reliable schemes for solving network equations by means of the Newton-Raphson iterative method and the Optimally-Ordered Triangular Factorization Technique, and simple procedures for determining fault-point negative and zero sequence impedances for unbalanced line faults. An application of the Optimally-Ordered Triangular Factorization Techniques results in remarkable savings in computing time and memory requirements.

  • The most of conventional power flow(PF) calculations which adopt the well-known numerical methods such as Newton-Raphson method often diverge in certain critical cases like near the voltage collapse point. Some Approaches have been reported for the application of Genetic Algorithm(GA) to PF problem to overcome the disadvantages mentioned above. This paper presents a new application technique of GA for PF problem, in which some improvements and modifications are made ; modification of fitness function, improvements on crossover method, mutation law and convergence criterion, introduction of reactive power check routine. Some case studies with IEEE 5, 6, 14 bus systems are performed to show the performance of proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new load flow analysis algorithm. In order to develop it, we converted typical power flow problem into optimal problem. This problem has the objective function that minimize the difference between calculated values and specified values of bus powers and subject to bus power equations of P and Q. Using it, we solved the divergence by singularity of Jacobian matrix, the divergence by initial value in the typical power flow study. In the study of a sample system, we verified the superiority of proposed algorithm.

  • The analysis of static power converter circuit using state-space method is presented. Semiconductors are modeled in two-state resistors depending on their ON or OFF states. Then the modes of circuit are determined according to the conducting states of semiconductors and different describing matrices are given automatically for each mode. Newton-Raphson algorithm is used as an iterative method for obtaining steady-state solution and an adjoint network is introduced for the efficient and accurate evaluation of the Jacobi matrix in the algorithm. Using the porogram exploited from the above algorithm, it is shown through examples that the results are in good agreement with the analytic solutions and computation time is considerably reduced for obtaining the steady-state solutions.

  • The power flow calculations(PFc) are the most important and powerful tools in power systems engineering. The conventional power now problem is solved generally with numerical methods such as Newton-Raphson. The conventional numerical method generally have some convergency problem, which is sensitive to initial value, and numerical stability problem concerned with matrix inversion. This paper presents a new power flow calculation algorithm based on the genetic algorithm(GA) which can overcome the disadvantages mentioned above. Some case studies with IEEE 6 bus system also presented to show the performance of proposed algorithm.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm of underground cable fault location based on the analysis of distributed parameter circuit. The proposed method firstly makes voltage and current equations for each of cores and sheathes respectively, and then establishes an equation of the fault distance according to the analysis of the fault conditions. Finally the solution of this equation is calculated by Newton-Raphson iteration method. The effectiveness of this proposed algorithm has been proven through PSCAD/EMTDC simulations.

  • In this paper, a novel algorithm of underground cable fault location based on the analysis of distributed parameter circuit is proposed. The proposed method makes voltage and current equations about core and sheath, and then establishes a function of the fault distance according to the analysis of fault conditions. Finally gets the solution of this function through Newton-Raphson iteration method. The effectiveness of proposed algorithm has been verified by Matlab program, and the cable parameters such as impedance and admittance are from EMTP simulation.

  • In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), modified Newton Raphson (mNR) method is widely used inverse algorithm for static image reconstruction due to its convergence speed and estimation accuracy. The unknown conductivity distribution is estimated iteratively by minimizing a cost functional such that the residual error namely the difference in measured and calculated voltages is reduced. Although, mNR method has good estimation performance, EIT inverse problem still suffers from ill-conditioned and ill-posedness nature. To mitigate the ill-posedness, generally, regularization methods are adopted. The inverse solution is highly dependent on the choice of regularization parameter. In most cases, the regularization parameter has a constant value and is chosen based on experience or trail and error approach. In situations, when the internal distribution changes or with high measurement noise, the solution does not get converged with the use of constant regularization parameter. Therefore, in this paper, in order to improve the image reconstruction performance, we propose a new scheme to determine the regularization parameter. The regularization parameter is computed based on residual error and updated every iteration. The proposed scheme is tested with numerical simulations and laboratory phantom experiments. The results show an improved reconstruction performance when using the proposed regularization scheme as compared to constant regularization scheme.

  • There are a lot of methods to predict the result of a game and many forecasting researches have been studied. Among many methods, if a statistical model including some realistic random variables is used to forecast, more accurate prediction could be expected than any others. In this work, Bradley-Terry model is considered to predict results of 2010 South Africa World Cup games via paired comparison method. This prediction model includes some random variables which affect the results of games. The worth parameters for each country in this model are convergence values obtained by using Newton-Raphson algorithm. With this model, we can forecast top 16 among 32 countries and up to who will win the victory. Final results of 2010 South Africa World Cup games are compared with this prediction and discuss further works.
