  • Structural and dynamic analyses of inducer and impeller for a oxidizer turbopump are peformed to investigate the safety level of strength and vibration at design point. Due to high rotational speed of turbopump, effects of centrifugal forces are carefully considered in the structural analysis. Hydrodynamic pressure is also considered as an external force applied to inducer and impeller blades. A three dimensional finite element method(FEM) is used for linear and nonlinear structural analyses with modified Newton-Raphson iteration method. After the nonlinear trim solution is obtained from the structural analysis, dynamic characteristics are obtained as a function of rotational speed from the linearized eigenvalue analysis at an equilibrium position. According to the results of numerical analysis, the safety margins of strength and vibration resonances m sufficient enough to be operated safely within the required life cycle.

  • Anti roll bar model for real time multibody vehicle dynamics model has been proposed using kinematic constraint. Anti roll bar have been modeled by kinematic relationship, and mass properties are neglected. Relative angle of torsion bar spring is computed by constraint about drop-link using Newton-Raphson iteration, and then the torque of torsion bar spring can be computed with the angle and torsion spring stiffness. Finally anti roll bar force acting on both knuckle can be calculated. To validate the proposed method, half car simulations of McPherson strut suspension and full car simulations are also carried out comparing with the ADAMS vehicle model with anti roll bar. CPU times are also measured to see the real-time capabilities of the proposed method.

  • Methane/Air premixed flames are studied numerically, using a detailed chemical model, to investigate the flame strech effects on the extinction in a counterflow. The finite difference method, time integration and modified Newton iteration are used, and adaptive grid technique and grid smoothing have been employed to adjust the grid system according to the spatial steepness of the solution profiles. Results show that the flame stretch, or the conventional nondimensionalized stretch having the tangential flow characteristics of the stretched flame alone cannot adequately describes the extinction phenomena. On the other hand, the local flame stretch having both the normal and tangential flow characteristics of the stretched flame can give a proper explanation to the extinction of the symmetric planar premixed flames stabilized in a counter flow. The extinction condition were found to be a constant local stretch regardless of the equivalence ratio.

  • Simplified model of slide-fed curtain coating flow has been developed and tested in this study. It rests on the sheet profile equations for curtain thickness in curtain flow and its trajectory derived by the integral momentum balance approach of Higgins and Scriven (1979) and Kistler (1983). It also draws on the film profile equation of film thickness variation in flow down a slide. The equations have been solved in finite difference approximation by Newton iteration with continuation. The results show that how inertia (Reynolds number), surface tension (capillary number), inclination angle of the slide, and air pressure difference across the curtain affect sheet trajectory and thickness profile. It has been revealed that approximate models can be useful to easily analyze coating flow dynamics without complex computations, giving qualitative agreement with full theory and with experiment.

  • The Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin(SUPG) finite element method is used to solve the two-dimensional laminar and turbulent flow. The flow is simulated by averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a penalty function approach and the lograithmic(k-$\varepsilon$) turbulent model is employed to take into account its turbulent behavior. The near-wall viscous sub-layer model is employed to approach the dominant viscous effects in the near wall zones. To find a good-enough initial guess of the Newton-Raphson iteration solving Nonlinear Matrix the Incremental method is considered for momentum and the Incomplete logarithmic turbu-lent equations for Turbulence. The validation of our method is investigated in comparision with published experimental data.

  • In statistical computing, it is often for researchers to need the distribution of a weighted sum of noncentral chi-square variables. In this case, it is very limited to know its exact distribution. There are many works to contribute to this topic, e.g. Imhof (1961) and Solomon-Stephens (1977). Imhof's method gives good approximation to the true distribution, but it is not easy to apply even though we consider the development of computer technology Solomon-Stephens's three moment chi-square approximation is relatively easy and accurate to apply. However, they skipped many details, and their simulation is limited to a weighed sum of central chi-square random variables. This paper gives details on Solomon-Stephens's method. We also extend their simulation to the weighted sum of non-central chi-square distribution. We evaluated approximated powers for homogeneous test and compared them with the true powers. Solomon-Stephens's method shows very good approximation for the case.

  • This paper deals with the comparison of parameter estimation methods in a 3-parameter Kappa distribution which is sometimes used in flood frequency analysis. The method of moment estimation(MME), L-moment estimation(L-ME), and maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) are applied to estimate three parameters. The performance of these methods are compared by Monte-carlo simulations. Especially for computing MME and L-ME, ike dimensional nonlinear equations are simplied to one dimensional equation which is calculated by the Newton-Raphson iteration under constraint. Based on the criterion of the mean squared error, the L-ME is recommended to use for small sample size $(n\leq100)$ while MLE is good for large sample size.

  • This paper presents post-buckling responses of a simply supported laminated composite beam subjected to a non-follower axially compression loads. In the nonlinear kinematic model of the laminated beam, total Lagrangian approach is used in conjunction with the Timoshenko beam theory. In the solution of the nonlinear problem, incremental displacement-based finite element method is used with Newton-Raphson iteration method. There is no restriction on the magnitudes of deflections and rotations in contradistinction to von-Karman strain displacement relations of the beam. The distinctive feature of this study is post-buckling analysis of Timoshenko Laminated beams full geometric non-linearity and by using finite element method. The effects of the fibber orientation angles and the stacking sequence of laminates on the post-buckling deflections, configurations and stresses of the composite laminated beam are illustrated and discussed in the numerical results. Numerical results show that the above-mentioned effects play a very important role on the post-buckling responses of the laminated composite beams.

  • W e performed a geometrical nonlinear dynamic analysis of laminated skew plates made of advanced composite materials (ACM ) based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT). The Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iteration are used for the nonlinear dynamic solution. The effects of skew angles and layup sequences on the nonlinear dynamic response for various parameters are studied using a nonlinear dynamic finite element program developed for this study. The several numerical results were in good agreement with those reported by other investigators for square composite and skew plates, and the new results reported in this paper show the significant interactions between the skew angle and layup sequence in the skew laminate. Key observation points are discussed and a brief design guideline is given.
