In this paper, we present a pilot system that tn compress a Korean sentence automatically using knowledge extracted from news articles and their headlines. A sot of compressed sentences can be presented as an abstraction of a document. As a compressed sentence is of headline-style, it could be easily displayed on small devices, such as mobile phones and other handhold devices. Our compressing system has shown to be promising through a preliminary experiment.

Our modern 'information-hungry' age demands delivery of information at unprecedented fast rates. Timely delivery of noteworthy information about recent events can help people from different segments of life in number of ways. As world has become global village, the flow of news in terms of volume and speed demands involvement of machines to help humans to handle the enormous data. News are presented to public in forms of video, audio, image and text. News text available on internet is a source of knowledge for billions of internet users. Urdu language is spoken and understood by millions of people from Indian subcontinent. Availability of online Urdu news enable this branch of humanity to improve their understandings of the world and make their decisions. This paper uses available online Urdu news data to train machines to automatically categorize provided news. Various machine learning algorithms were used on news headline for training purpose and the results demonstrate that Bernoulli Naïve Bayes (Bernoulli NB) and Multinomial Naïve Bayes (Multinomial NB) algorithm outperformed other algorithms in terms of all performance parameters. The maximum level of accuracy achieved for the dataset was 94.278% by multinomial NB classifier followed by Bernoulli NB classifier with accuracy of 94.274% when Urdu stop words were removed from dataset. The results suggest that short text of headlines of news can be used as an input for text categorization process.
With the development of the Internet, the media market is experiencing rapid change. The traditional form of offline newspaper markets, which has created the mainstream news delivery market, have been losing large amounts of power due to the emergence of online media. On the other hand, online media armed with its ability to post breaking news almost as it occurs has increased its influence and popularity at a rapid speed. However, since the exposure time and readership of online newspapers are less than their offline counterparts online media has a high dependence on sensational titles and somewhat exaggerating headlines rather than the objective and recapitulative headlines which are preferred. This paper will examine the function and significance of headlines, and conduct a comparative analysis on contents and forms of the headlines in offline newspaper and online newspaper in order to identify the characteristics of each newspaper. Through comparisons, it examines the types of headlines and the transference of headlines. In addition, it examines the differences in recognition of copy editors according to media in determining the headline, and it illuminates which type of headlines is preferred in order to instigate readers to read online newspapers. The analysis results of title-transferring cases in offline newspaper and online newspapers are that offline newspapers try to convey the contents accurately by making use of an information-transferring headline, while attention-attracting headline or subject-hiding headlines tend to be used for attracting the eye of readers. In addition, analysis results of headlines that are put on the top with a click counts in online newspapers are that attention-attracting headlines are the majority, while subject-hiding headlines that are hardly used in offline newspapers, are well-used in online newspapers. In an interview with copy editors, they responded that offline editors focus on the fact-transference in determining the title, while online editors put the weight on immediacy in the delivery of news and the function of guiding readers.

Dark patterns refer to intentionally deceptive design techniques used by online service providers to hide necessary information, preventing users from taking desired actions or luring them into unintended behaviors. In this study, we analyzed the prevalence of dark patterns such as banners, advertorials, pop-ups, and video ads, and their impact on users across the top 200 news websites worldwide. The research revealed that there is a minimal correlation between banner ads and user bounce rates or unique visitors. Consequently, the main screen moving banner and headline news screen moving banner were most frequently observed in South America, while the headline news screen fixed banner was most commonly observed in Asia. All other categories were predominantly observed in Europe, making European websites the most diverse and abundant in various dark patterns.
Major news organizations in Korea are often accused of intentionally conspiring to advance conservative agendas under the disguise of unbiased reporting. Critics suspect that headlines are frequently abused for a certain framing effect. The widespread use of direct quotation is cited as one area of the abuse in headlines. The present study is an attempt to determine whether the criticism is based on facts. We conducted two separate surveys. First, the headlines on three major Korean newspapers were compared with those on The New York Times, Washington Post, and The Times. Then, we collected from Korean and English speakers factivity judgements for the sentences containing a direct quotation. The results confirm previous studies that Korean newspapers engage in a heavy use of direct quotation in headlines. Moreover, the results partially confirm the popular perception that the common use of direct quotation is a recent phenomenon in Korea. Finally, the study finds that both groups of speakers consider direct quotations more truthful than factive sentences.
With the wide spread of Social Network Services (SNS), fake news-which is a way of disguising false information as legitimate media-has become a big social issue. This paper proposes a deep learning architecture for detecting fake news that is written in Korean. Previous works proposed appropriate fake news detection models for English, but Korean has two issues that cannot apply existing models: Korean can be expressed in shorter sentences than English even with the same meaning; therefore, it is difficult to operate a deep neural network because of the feature scarcity for deep learning. Difficulty in semantic analysis due to morpheme ambiguity. We worked to resolve these issues by implementing a system using various convolutional neural network-based deep learning architectures and "Fasttext" which is a word-embedding model learned by syllable unit. After training and testing its implementation, we could achieve meaningful accuracy for classification of the body and context discrepancies, but the accuracy was low for classification of the headline and body discrepancies.
This study analyzed contents of main news of 7 channels for 4 years during the initial period of introduction of the general programming cable channel(GPCC) in order to examine changes in subject composition and diversity of broadcasting news contents due to the introduction of GPCC. As a result of the analysis, terrestrial broadcasters treated a wide range of topics, while the GPCC's news focused on political news and differentiated from the terrestrial in the composition of the topic. In the composition of the news topic headline news, GPCC showed distinctive structure using political news and North Korea news, while terrestrial news was treated as major news for economic and daily information news. As a result of analyzing the diversity of broadcast news in the first four years of opening GPCC, it has changed into a strategy of selecting and concentrating in order to compete with the terrestrial broadcasters. In the initial broadcasting news market, the terrestrial broadcastings were used to maintain diversity strategies while the GPCCs were using concentrated strategies.
This study explored news coverage on the sex crimes and analyzed news by network analysis and frame analysis based on the layered model to compare news coverage on the celebrity. As a result, in case of celebrity the broadcasting focused more and the tone of news is more sensational. The news in ground wave broadcasting more detailed on the sex crimes. It blamed the An, the governor of Chungnam more and the news is more sensational by interviewing marginal man. In #Metoo case, broadcasting news focused on the offender. The title of case name and the headline are framed based on the offender. Especially consensual relationship frame is dominated in the sex crime news. This study also can see the offender blaming frame and in the viewpoint of agenda-setting. It is difficult to find the cause of #Metoo movement and the structural approach on the case. This study highlighted the importance of layed model when analyzing the sex-crime news related with #Metoo movement.
This study examines different news frames of local newspapers reporting the controversial 'Nu[lear Waste Site' issues which deeply split regions showing their intention to bid for the state affair. Three local papers were analyzed for this study, "Gwang-Ju-Il-bo" "Mae-il-sin-mun" and "Jun-buk-il-bo." Overall, the three local papers displayed widely divergent main news frames on the same issue. Firstly, "Gwang-Ju-Il-bo", and "Mae-il-sln-mun" showed the strong tendency of using 'counter frame' while "Jun-buk-il-bo" exhibited 'loral development frame'. Secondly, "Gwang-Ju-Il-bo", and "Mae-il-sin-mun" were frequently headlined 'Nuclear Waste Site', while "Jun-buk-il-bo" carried headlines 'Radioactive Waste Management Facility' overwhelmingly more often than the other two papers, indicating that headline key words are closely associated with the configuration of news frames. Thirdly, the main news frames remained consistent for "Gwang-Ju-Il-bo", and "Mae-il-sin-mun" even after the government's report about the possible connection of 'ion-beam irradiation-accelator' and 'Nuclear Waste Site.' On the other hand, "Jun-buk-il-bo" was significantly less headlined 'Nuclear Waste Site' while significantly more headlined "Radioactice Waste Management Facility." "Jun-Buk-il-bo" which is in stark contrast to the other two papers changed in its tone by increasing the 'local development frame' with decrease in the 'counter frame.' The "Jun-buk-il-bo"'s more frequent use of 'Radioactive Waste Management Facility' as a headline than "Nuclear Waste Management Equipment" is seen as its attempt to minimize negative image of Nuclear Waste and to promote favorable public opinion by highlighting aspects of economic benefits and the local development the construction would brind about. The major findings of this study further support the claim that media overage ends up a reality. The fact that Buan in Jun-buk Province made a successful bid for the construction is not a coincidence.
