  • Korean civil and environmental organizations had selected and announced ‘The top ten pieces of news in the environmental field of the year’ on Dec. 2, 1999. This study investigated the possibilities that these could be used as subject matters of environmental curriculum and infused into the environmental textbook of secondary schools, referring to documents and internet materials. The top ten pieces of environmental news could be clarified as controversial topics. The locality was analyzed that 2 pieces occurred mainly in a specific area, 4 pieces in several areas and 4 pieces around all over the country. Most of them had the opposing partners as the federal and local governmental vs. civil organizations and people. Each of them could be used as subject matters for 7 to 13 contents domains of the 6th and 7th Korean environmental curriculum. The knowledge of most of them had related counterpart concepts to be infused into the ‘Environmental Science’textbook for the high school students. • With the wide spread of Social Network Services (SNS), fake news-which is a way of disguising false information as legitimate media-has become a big social issue. This paper proposes a deep learning architecture for detecting fake news that is written in Korean. Previous works proposed appropriate fake news detection models for English, but Korean has two issues that cannot apply existing models: Korean can be expressed in shorter sentences than English even with the same meaning; therefore, it is difficult to operate a deep neural network because of the feature scarcity for deep learning. Difficulty in semantic analysis due to morpheme ambiguity. We worked to resolve these issues by implementing a system using various convolutional neural network-based deep learning architectures and "Fasttext" which is a word-embedding model learned by syllable unit. After training and testing its implementation, we could achieve meaningful accuracy for classification of the body and context discrepancies, but the accuracy was low for classification of the headline and body discrepancies.

  • Recently, South Korean newspapers began trying to charge for online news. This study attempts to shed light on the factors that influence payment for online news by analyzing Korea Press Foundation's 2022 Media Audience Survey (N = 58,936). The results of this study showed a steady increase in past payment and paying intent for online news since 2020. Predictors of past payment for online news included gender, age, and education, and interest in political and social issues. News use through specific media (i.e., newspapers, magazines, portals, messengers, social media, video sites, and podcasts), as well as mobile applications and e-mail newsletters, were found to contribute to paid subscriptions. Based on the findings of the study, news organizations should prepare to offer differentiated news content through their own news platforms and establish concrete plans to build trust in news.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the concept and definition of fake news focusing on misinformation/false information and is to examine the ways in which our society can respond to the distortion of social reality and damage to democracy caused by information distortion such as fake news. To do this, the concept of fake news was examined based on the level of facticity and intention to device, and our social environment in which fake news was created and spread was examined from the perspective of datafication. In this environment, the library community, which plays a pivotal role in human access to and use of information, argued that it should strive to establish and provide universal literacy education in order to realize the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 agenda. The core of universal literacy education is to understand the society by investigating and analyzing data communication types according to the degree of datafication and the political, economic, social, and cultural background of society. For this reason, it was concluded that universal literacy should be implemented flexibly according to the degree of datafiation and users of each society.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the middle school and high school student's environmental consciousness and clothing behavior for environmental protection in their home, and to present the basic educational material for the reasonable clothing behavior which could help the environmental problems. This study was done by self-administered questionaires to the 439 middle school and high school students, and done from March to April in 1997. Frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation were calculated. $\chi$$^2$-test, t-test, and F-test were done for group differences, and Duncan's multiple range test was followed. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. Environmental consciousness was higher at the middle school students, at good graded students, and at the good news receivers who watch or listen to the mass media frequently. And also environmental consciousness was higher at the students who separate and dispose waste practically and at those who realize the need of environmental education. 2. Those who purchase clothes reasonably in their home, practising the clothing behavior for environmental protection, were the middle school students, and the students sho watch or listen news frequently through the mass media. And those who manage clothes well in their home were the middle school students, metropolitan area residents, good news receivers, and residents in apartments. Those who separate and dispose waste well, those who have experienced much environmental education, those who know better the environmental protection marks which are attatched to the low pollution products and those who realize the need of environmental education seriously, were almost the same students who buy and manage clothes reasonably in their home, practising the clothing behavior for the environmental protection. And those who feel much more environmental education seriously were those who reuse clothes practically in their home. 3. • The number of children wearing make-up is increasing. "Children's cosmetics" is not a legal term though it is commonly used. The purpose of this study is to analyze discussions on children's cosmetics based on news articles found on the internet. This study also identifies what products are being distributed as children's cosmetics. Keyword searches were conducted using internet portal sites. Information was extracted from news articles and Best Item 100 for children's cosmetics. The results of analyzing news articles and Best Item 100 lists are as follows : 1. There were two main discussion topics in news articles. The first topic was related to marketing(the branding and trends of children's cosmetics). The other topic was about government regulations(side effects, harmful ingredients, control, regulations, attention, proper product usage, product categorization, and the overall safety of children's cosmetics). By 2014, many articles had covered government control and regulation. However, since 2017, news articles have focused on the product categorization and the concern for overall safety has dramatically increased. 2. Three different product categories have appeared in the Best Item 100; they are cosmetics, toys, and other products. In market, consumers recognized children's cosmetics as cosmetics and also as toys. Between 2017 and 2018's Best Item, other products are dramatically down, color cosmetics and single cosmetics are on the rise, and the purchase of domestic products has increased.

  • This study was an exploratory study to identify the discomfort of using multicultural terms. The contents of the study included exploration of prior research, analysis of news articles, and in-depth interview with field experts. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, five multicultural terms such as 'multiculturalism', 'multicultural society', 'multicultural education', '다문화가족' and '다문화가정' were extracted from exploration of prior research. Second, as a result of news analysis, 'multiculturalism' mainly appeared in the early 2000s and has been rapidly decreasing since 2006, and 'multicultural society' and 'multicultural education' have been steadily written. In contrast, '다문화가족' and '다문화가정', which first appeared in 2003 and 2004, have exceeded 80% of multicultural news articles since 2009. Third, regarding multicultural terms, the study participants were well aware of '다문화가족' and '다문화가정', and little knew of 'multiculturalism'. In an interview conducted before learning multicultural terms, '다문화가족' and '다문화가정' were recognized as familiar but uncomfortable and distinguishing terms. And 'multiculturalism', 'multicultural society', and 'multicultural education' were recognized as abstract and unfamiliar terms. In an interview conducted after learning about multicultural terms, the study participants expressed confusion about the mixed use of multicultural terms with different meanings and recognized the need for clarification.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to critically analyze the process of framing child abuse cases through the news coverage after the enforcement of mandatory CCTV installation policy which was initiated in 2015. Methods: The research uses the revised and supplemented frame analysis tools developed by Iyengar (1990) and Semetko and Valkenburg (2000) to investigate 25 broadcasting news reported by KBS, from September 2015 to December 2017. Results: First, according to the formal analysis, the reports on abuse cases prove to be either a mixed or episodic frame which covers the cases heavily based on a particular incident rather than holistically looks into the situation. Second, in content analysis, child abuse news is delivered mainly through "human interest frame." Conclusion/Implications: The study identifies three dominant discourses formed as a result of the child abuse CCTV news: 'CCTV is a all-around player' discourse, 'preschool teachers as potential criminals' discourse and 'preschool teachers as nonprofessionals' discourse. This study is significant in that it presents that mass media do not always say the truth, but frame social issues within an ideological delivery system.
