This paper proposes an approximated contact force model to identify the nonlinear behavior of a fuel rod with gap supports; also, the numerical prediction of interfacial forces in the mechanical contact of fuel rods with gap supports is studied. The Newmark integration method requires the current status of the contact force, but the contact force is not given a priori. Taylor's expansion can be used to predict the unknown contact force; therefore, it should be guaranteed that the first derivative of the contact force is continuous. This work proposes a continuous and differentiable contact force model with the ability to estimate the current state of the contact force. An approximated convex and differentiable potential function for the contact force is described, and a variational formulation is also provided. A numerical example that considers the particularly stiff supports has been studied, and a fuel rod with hardening supports was also examined for a realistic simulation. An approximated proper solution can be obtained using the results, and abrupt changes from the contacting state to non-contacting state, or vice versa, can be relieved. It can also be seen that not only the external force but also the developed contact force affects the response.

The design requirement for ground mounted sign structures are fairly well defined in the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals and consists of applying an equivalent pseudo-dynamic loading to account for the dynamic effects of wind loads and ignores the dynamic effect due to moving vehicle loads. This design approach, however, should not be applied to the design of bridge mounted sign structures because ignoring the dynamic effects of the moving vehicle loads may produce non-conservative results, since the stiffness of the bridge structure can greatly influence the behavior. Not enough information is available in the literatures which provide guide lines to include the influence of moving vehicles in the design of the bridge mounted sign structures. This paper describes a theoretical methodology, Bridge-Vehicle Interaction Element, which can be utilized to account for the dynamic effect of moving vehicles. A case study is also included where this methodology was successfully applied. It was concluded that the bridge-vehicle interaction finite element developed can provide a more accurate representation of the behavior of bridge mounted sign structures. The result of these analysis enabled development of simple and effective retrofitting scheme for the existing support system of bridge-mounted-structure.

In the present paper, the nonlinear analysis of dynamic response of the jacket type offshore structures subject to nonlinear fluid force is performed. Furthermore, several analysis methods, such as quasi-static analysis, Newmark-$\beta$ method and state vector time integration technique, and described and compared with each others in order to investigate the efficiency numerical of the schemes for this kind of nonlinear structural analysis. In the problem formulation, various environmental forces acting on the jacket type offshore structure have been studied and calculated. Particularly, hydrodynamic forces are calculated by using the Morison type formula, which contains the interaction effect between the motion of the structure and the velocity of fluid particles. Also, Stokes' 5th order wave theory and Airy's linear wave theory are used to predict the velocity distribution of the fluid particles. Finally, the nonlinear equation of motion of the structure is obtained by using three-dimensional finite element formulation. Based on the above procedures, two examples, i.e. a single pile and a typical offshore jacket platform, are studied in details.
The dams are huge structures storing a large amount of water and failures of them cause especially irreparable loss of lives during the earthquakes. They are named as a group of structures subjected to fluid-structure interaction. So, the response of the fluid and its hydrodynamic pressures on the dam should be reflected more accurately in the structural analyses to determine the real behavior as soon as possible. Different mathematical and analytical modelling approaches can be used to calculate the water hydrodynamic pressure effect on the dam body. In this paper, it is aimed to determine the dynamic response of concrete gravity dams using different water modelling approaches such as Westergaard, Lagrange and Euler. For this purpose, Sariyar concrete gravity dam located on the Sakarya River, which is 120km to the northeast of Ankara, is selected as a case study. Firstly, the main principals and basic formulation of all approaches are given. After, the finite element models of the dam are constituted considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction using ANSYS software. To determine the structural response of the dam, the linear transient analyses are performed using 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion record. In the analyses, element matrices are computed using the Gauss numerical integration technique. The Newmark method is used in the solution of the equation of motions. Rayleigh damping is considered. At the end of the analyses, dynamic characteristics, maximum displacements, maximum-minimum principal stresses and maximum-minimum principal strains are attained and compared with each other for Westergaard, Lagrange and Euler approaches.
In this study, inelastic displacement ratios are investigated for existing systems with known lateral strength considering soil structure interaction. For this purpose, SDOF systems for period range of 0.1-3.0 s with different hysteretic behaviors are considered for a number of 18 earthquake motions recorded on soft soil. The effect of stiffness degradation on inelastic displacement ratios is investigated. The Modified Clough model is used to represent structures that exhibit significant stiffness degradation when subjected to reverse cyclic loading and the elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. Soil structure interaction analyses are conducted by means of equivalent fixed base model effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. A new equation is proposed for inelastic displacement ratio of system with SSI with elastoplastic or degrading behavior as a function of structural period ($\tilde{T}$), strength reduction factor (R) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}$/T). The proposed equation for $\tilde{C}_R$ which takes the soil-structure interaction into account should be useful in estimating the inelastic deformation of existing structures with known lateral strength.

In this study, performance analyses have been conducted for a 5MW class wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with K-${\epsilon}$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of the blade show different results compared to the case of rigid blade model.

The dynamic response of rotor-bearing systems subjected to six-component nonststionary earthquake ground accelerations is analyzed. The governing equations of motion for the rotor are derived using Lagrangian approach. The six-component earthquake inputs result in both inhomogeneous and parametric excitations, so that the conventional spectral analysis of random vibration is not applicable. The method of Monte Carlo simulation is utilized to simulate the six-component nonstationary earthquake ground motions and to determine the response statistics of rotor-bearing systems. The significant influences due to rotational motions of seismic base on the overall structural response is demonstrated by a numerical example.
The present work describes a new time marching procedure for structural dynamics analyses. In this novel technique, time integration parameters are automatically evaluated according to the properties of the model. Such parameters are locally defined, allowing the user to input a numerical dissipation property for each element, which defines the amount of numerical dissipation to be introduced. Since the integration parameters are locally defined as a function of the structural element itself, the time marching technique adapts according to the model, providing enhanced accuracy. The new methodology is based on displacement-velocity relations and no computation of accelerations is required. Furthermore, the method is second order accurate, it has guaranteed stability, it is truly self-starting and it allows highly controllable algorithm dissipation in the higher modes. Numerical results are presented and compared to those provided by the Newmark and the Bathe methods, illustrating the good performance of the new time marching procedure.
The main purpose of this paper is the numerical analysis of the non-linear seismic response of a RC building mock-up. The mock-up is subjected to different synthetic horizontal seismic excitations. The numerical approach is based on a 3D-model involving multilayered shell elements. These elements are composed of several single-layer membranes with various eccentricities. Bending effects are included through these eccentricities. Basic equations are first written for a single membrane element with its own eccentricity and then generalised to the multilayered shell element by superposition. The multilayered shell is considered as a classical shell element : all information about non-linear constitutive relations are investigated at the local scale of each layer, whereas balance and kinematics are checked afterwards at global scale. The non-linear dynamic response of the building is computed with Newmark algorithm. The numerical dynamic results (blind simulations) are considered in the linear and non linear cases and compared with experimental results from shaking table tests. Multilayered shell elements are found to be a promising tool for predictive computations of RC structures behaviour under 3D seismic loadings.
