A new oenonid polychaete, Arabella turbidiricolor sp. nov., collected from intertidal zone along the coasts of eastern, western, and southern Korea is described. In Korea, this new species might have been confused with Arabella iricolor(Montagu, 1804), the type species of the genus, in having the following characteristics: ventralmost chaeta tapering gradually to guard, MI left robust and right gracile, MII right long, MV both with one tooth and posterior postchaetal lobe shorter than chaetae. However, A. turbidiricolor sp. nov. is readily distinguished from the latter by the following features: ventral maxillary carriers longer than or equal to dorsal, MI both distally falcate, and pygidium with two swollen pads. We provide detailed descriptions and illustrations for the new species in the present study. Also, morphological characteristics of known Arabella species are compared and discussed with a key to them.
We propose a new speech enhancement algorithm based on left-right Hidden Markov Model (HMM) with state decision using Log-likelihood Ratio Test (LRT). Since the conventional HMM-based speech enhancement methods try to improve speech quality for all states, they introduce huge computational loads inappropriate to real-time implementation. In the left-right HMM, only the current and the next state are considered for a possible state transition so to reduce the computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a method to decide the current state by using the LRT on the previous state. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the speed up to 60% with 0.2∼0.4 dB degradation of speech quality compared to the conventional method.
This report describes a case of dizziness in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia that was caused by a vestibular schwannoma. A 60-year-old man with a history of pain on his left cheek, chin, molar and tongue for 5 months was diagnosed as suffering with trigeminal neuralgia of the left mandibular nerve, and this was caused by a left vestibular schwannoma. The diagnosis of the tumor was confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and so gamma knife surgery was performed 1 month later. At that time, the patient had been referred to the pain clinic due to allodynia on the tongue and gingival, and hypesthesia was also present on the left half of the face. Trigeminal nerve block with dehydrogenated alcohol and stellate ganglion block with 1% mepivacaine were performed and oral medication with diphenylhydantoin was started. The symptoms were alleviated after nerve block and oral medication. Dizziness, blurred vision and ataxia then developed from the 13th hospital day. We considered the symptoms as a side effect of diphenylhydantoin and we reduced the dose of diphenylhydantoin. However, the symptoms grew worse. Another brain MRI showed a slight increase of the tumor size and a mass effect with displacement of the adjacent organs, and hydrocephalus was also noted. This case shows the importance of considering the secondary symptoms that are due to brain tumor while treating trigeminal neuralgia. The changes of the brain tumors should also be considered along with the presence of new side effects.
The understanding the natureof occlusal tooth contacts of natural dentition is important for correct diagnosis and treatment of diseases developed in stomatognatic system. Several investigator have studied the distribution of tooth contacts in maximum intercuspation and have reported contact locations with respect to the tooth position. Many methods have been clinically applied for the occlusal analysis in the intercuspal position. However, there are few quantative methods. This study analyzed the new software version of the T-Scan system to record and analyze occlusal contact balance in the anterior-posterior and right-left directions. Six time moment statistics and five moment statistics were calculated in the midsagittal and the incisal axes of the occlusal plane. In the present study, informed consent was obtained from 100 subjects with natural dentitions. The results were as follows ; 1. The mean of the dental arch length & width were 48.78, 65.32mm in whole population, 49.09mm, 65.50mm in males, 48.78mm, 64.63mm in females, respectively. 2. The mean of TLR & PLR were 0.193mm(left), 0.311mm(left), respectively. Therefore, the distribution of tooth contacts was bilaterally symmetric. 3. The mean of TFB & PFB were 29.168mm, 29.055mm, and that of LFB & RFB were 29.627mm, 29.587mm, respectively, and the qualitative center of occlusal contacts was the firtst molar. 4. The mean of LL & RL were 31.666mm, 31.377mm, respectively, and the quantitative center of occlusal force was the first molar. 5. The mean of LF & RF were 60.237N, 59.276N, respectively and Left-right moment was 72.491Nmm. Therfore, the distribution of occlusal force was bilaterally balanced.
Purpose: This study aimed to generate virtual mandibular left first molar teeth using deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGANs) and analyze their matching accuracy with actual tooth morphology to propose a new paradigm for using medical data. Methods: Occlusal surface images of the mandibular left first molar scanned using a dental model scanner were analyzed using DCGANs. Overall, 100 training sets comprising 50 original and 50 background-removed images were created, thus generating 1,000 virtual teeth. These virtual teeth were classified based on the number of cusps and occlusal surface ratio, and subsequently, were analyzed for consistency by expert dental technicians over three rounds of examination. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0 (IBM), including intraclass correlation coefficient for intrarater reliability, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post-hoc analysis. Results: Virtual mandibular left first molars exhibited high consistency in the occlusal surface ratio but varied in other criteria. Moreover, consistency was the highest in the occlusal buccal lingual criteria at 91.9%, whereas discrepancies were observed most in the occusal buccal cusp criteria at 85.5%. Significant differences were observed among all groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the classification of the virtually generated left mandibular first molar according to several criteria, DCGANs can generate virtual data highly similar to real data. Thus, subsequent research in the dental field, including the development of improved neural network structures, is necessary.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of left ventricular (LV) function plays a pivotal role in the management of patients with valvular heart disease, including those caused by rheumatic heart disease. Noninvasive LV pressure-strain loop analysis is emerging as a new echocardiographic method to evaluate global LV systolic function, integrating longitudinal strain by speckle-tracking analysis and noninvasively measured blood pressure to estimate myocardial work. The aim of this study was to characterize global LV myocardial work efficiency in patients with severe rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) with preserved ejection fraction (EF). METHODS: We retrospectively included adult patients with severe rheumatic MS with preserved EF (> 50%) and sinus rhythm. Healthy individuals without structural heart disease were included as a control group. Global LV myocardial work efficiency was estimated with a proprietary algorithm from speckle-tracking strain analyses, as well as noninvasive blood pressure measurements. RESULTS: A total of 45 individuals with isolated severe rheumatic MS with sinus rhythm and 45 healthy individuals were included. In healthy individuals without structural heart disease, the mean global LV myocardial work efficiency was 96% (standard deviation [SD], 2), Compared with healthy individuals, median global LV myocardial work efficiency was significantly worse in MS patients (89%; SD, 4; p < 0.001) although the LVEF was similar. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with isolated severe rheumatic MS and preserved EF, had global LV myocardial work efficiencies lower than normal controls.
Metagonimus miyatai n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is described based on adult flukes collected from experimental dogs and hamsters fed with metacercariae encysted in the sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, dace, Tribolodon hakonensis and T. taczanowskii, common fat-minnow. Morocco steindachneri pale chub, Zacco platypus, and dark chub, Zacco temmincki, and on those collected from naturally infected humans. The new species was morphologically compared with M. yokogawai and M. takahashii obtained from experimental animals fed with the sweetflsh and the crucian carp, Cnrossius caressius, respectively. The uterine loops of M. miyatai reached near the posterior end of the body through the space between the two testes, whereas those of M. yokogawai, occupied only the space between the acetabulum and anterior border of two testes. This uterine tubule distribution was similar to that of another closely related species, M. takahashii. However vitellaria of M. miyatai ended in front of the posterior end of the left testis, while those of M. takahcshii reached the posterior end of the left testis and ran it over. By raising M. miyatai as a new species, differentiation of M. yokogawai and M. takahashii became very clear. A key to the species of the genus Metagonimus in the Far East has been proposed.
The purpose of this paper is to improve the existing phase split algorithm considering the minimum green time in COSMOS. In the case of a signalized intersection where two wide and narrow streets intersect each other, the time required for the pedestrian crossing is frequently longer than the time alloted to the through traffic on a minor street. In order to meet the minimum green time requirement for the pedestrian less time in alloted automatically to the left-turn traffic, creating heavy congestion on the left-turn approach. To solve this problem, this study suggests a new algorithm which shares the barrier using minimum green time and shares the burden with signal phases alloted to the crossing street traffic on the basis of the equal ratio of the degree of saturation, while maintaining the minimum green time requirement. The new algorithm was compared with the existing algorithm by using a microscopic simulation model for COSMOS evaluation developed at Ajou University. The simulation results show that the new algorithm produces better performance than the existing one.
A new bioelectrical impedance method has been developed and evaluated. The electrodes; were made of stainless steel and electrical interfaces were created by an upright subject gripping hand electrodes and stepping onto foot electrodes. Eight tactile electrodes were in contact with surfaces of both hands and feet; thumb, palm and fingers, front sole, and rear sole. Automatic on-off switches were used to change current pathways and to measure voltage differences for target segments. Segmental body resistances and whole body resistance(RWHOLE)were measured in 60 healthy subjects. Segmental resistances of right arm(RRA), left arm(RLA), trunk(RT), right leg(RRL) and left leg(RLL)were310.0$\pm$61.6$\Omega$, 316.9$\pm$64.6$\Omega$, 25.1$\pm$3.4$\Omega$, 236.8$\pm$31.2$\Omega$ and 237.6$\pm$30.4$\Omega$, respectively. Individual segmental impedance indexes(Ht2/RRA, Ht2/RT, and Ht2 /RLA) were closely related to lean body mass(LBM)as measured by densitometry ranged from r=0.925 to 0.960. Ht2/(RRA+RT+RLA) predicted LBM slightly better(r=0.969) than the traditional index, Ht2/RWHOLE(r=0.964), supporting the accuracy of the segmental measurement. A multiple regression equation utilizing Ht2/RRA, Ht2/RT and Ht2/RRL predicted LBM with r=0.971. Ht2/RRA term of the regression contributed to more than 40$\%$ of the LBM prediction, indicating that lean mass of arm represented whole body LBM more closely than other body segments. The new bioimpedance method was characterized by upright posture, eight tactile electrodes, segmental measurements and utilization of electronic switches in comparison with the traditional method. The measurement with this new method was extremely reproducible, quick and easy to use.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of chitosan-calcium sulfate mixture on early bony consolidation in osteodistracted dogs. The experimental group was divided into 3 groups: saline group(Control), chitosan group(Group CH) and chitosan-calcium sulfate mixture group(Group CH+CS). Four dogs were allocated to each group and classified into B week observation subgroups and 5 week observation subgroups, respectively. Two dogs were allocated to each subgroup. The lateral surface of the left mandibular body was exposed in the subperiosteal plane and vertical osteotomy was carried out on the mandibular body. An external distraction device was applied to the mandibular body. Mandibular distraction was started 5 days after the osteotomy at a rate of 1 m per day for a total of 10 w distraction for 10 days. After completion of distraction, chitosan, chitosan-calcium sulfate and saline were injected into the distracted zone of the group CH, group CH+CS and control. The external device was left in place for 3 or 5 weeks to allow for bony consolidation. Serial radiographs were carried out every week. Two dogs of each group, six dogs in total, were sacrificed at 3 weeks, and the other six dogs at 5 week after distraction. Bone specimens of the distracted mandibles were taken for histologic examination. New bone was not noted in the distracted zone of 3 week observation subgroups in the control and group CH. However, new bone was developed in the group CH+CS with a narrow fibrous interzone in the area of the distracted zone. While osteogenesis was mild in the margin of the distracted Bone of 5 week observation subgroup in the control, new bone was noted much in the group CH and group CH+CS. However, osteogenesis was noted more significantly in the group CH+CS than that of group CH. In conclusion, chitosan-calcium sulfate mixture was more effective on early bony consolidation in distraction osteogenesis
