  • In this article the problem of computing floating-point reciprocal cube root functions is considered. Our new algorithms for this task decrease the number of arithmetic operations used for computing $1/{\sqrt[3]{x}}$. A new approach for selection of magic constants is presented in order to minimize the computation time for reciprocal cube roots of arguments with movable decimal point. The underlying theory enables partitioning of the base argument range x∈[1,8) into 3 segments, what in turn increases accuracy of initial function approximation and decreases the number of iterations to one. Three best algorithms were implemented and carefully tested on 32-bit microcontroller with ARM core. Their custom C implementations were favourable compared with the algorithm based on cbrtf(x) function taken from C <math.h> library on three different hardware platforms. As a result, the new fast approximation algorithm for the function $1/{\sqrt[3]{x}}$ was determined that outperforms all other algorithms in terms of computation time and cycle count.

  • Developing Mathematical Thinking has been continually emphasized in the Korean curriculum and this emphasis has demonstrated its impact on math textbooks and classes in South Korean schools. This study intends to discover how the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking should be reflected through School Mathematics regardless of subfields of Mathematics or its levels. Finally, this study concluded that the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking is being reflected on School Mathematics. However, more research in certain areas needs to be done. Through analyzing textbooks, it is certain that the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking is being reflected on School Mathematics. Moreover, it appears that students are able to develop new concepts using Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking. Mathematical Thinking is a subject that many scholars and mathematicians have taken an interest in. Especially with the math curriculum in Korea, designing and implementing classes that would help students develop their mathematical thinking are increasingly being emphasized. This study defines what mathematical development mechanism is, and based on this definition, it further analyzes the math textbook of the revised 2007 curriculum. As a result, textbook developers and math teachers should examine and analyze the concepts that learners need to acquire and how they develop. Further, this study not only presents the concepts students are expected to acquire, but also looks at the flow in which concepts have been introduced to students. It concludes that activities that can help students have an idea of what they are going to learn in the future should be provided during class time.

  • The researcher conducts the following research to correctly identify the gifted children of science information. First, the researcher makes sufficient theoretic research on gifted children for the sake of definition and identification of the gifted children of information science, and reconstructed the identification principles, factors and procedures of the gifted children of information science on the basis of those of the gifted children of math and science the theories of a number of scholars and presented new methods of identifying new gifted children of information science. Second, the researcher set the identification procedures of the gifted children of information science and the relevant content and conducted the identification of gifted children through the observation and evaluation of sixth graders through three stages. Third, the researcher compares and analyzed the selected gifted children based on the identification procedures and ordinary groups of students excellent in math and science in terms of task achievement and looked into validity.

  • Zoltan, P. Dienes is a famous researcher and practitioner who has tried to teach mathematical structures to children for about 50 years. Even though his ideas of teaching mathematics and materials including MAB have been well known in Korea, they are only a part of his achievement he has developed for his whole life. So this article is designed for taking an overview of his whole life and achievement and getting some implications for today's mathematics education. In this article, his life story could be divided by five periods in terms of a scholastic career and his research achievement could be reorganized with respect to five theses: psychology of learning mathematics, mathematical curriculum, teacher education, games and material for mathematical learning. As a result, it is found that there is a deep connection between his personal life and his scholastic career.

  • There is a growing interest in the education of gifted children nation-wide. The present study was performed to find out characteristics of students who are receiving special education as gifted using a new psychological inventory which measures the temperament and charcter separately. We compared students who have been selected for their trlent in math and science with students who do well academically. Academic competence was operationally defined by grades or by IQ. Gifted children are usually thought to be characterized by an innate ability, and it was expected that there would be some difference between temperaments of the gifted group and those of the academically competent group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups not only in their temperaments, but also in other sub-scales of character. This result suggests that in spite of the extensive effort and cost involved in the selection process, the children who are currently selected as gifted show no distinction when compared to academically competent students. Based on the results some practical suggestions were made in order to improve the selection of the gifted children.

  • This work started with recent students' conception on Linear Algebra. We were trying to help their understanding of Linear Algebra concepts by adding visualization tools. To accomplish this, we have developed most of needed tools for teaching of Linear Algebra class. Visualizing concepts of Linear Algebra is not only an aid for understanding but also arouses students' interest on the subject for a better comprehension, which further helps the students to play with them for self-discovery. Therefore, visualizing data should be prepared thoroughly rather than just merely understanding on static pictures as a special circumstance when we would study visual object. By doing this, we carefully selected GeoGebra which is suitable for dynamic visualizing and Sage for algebraic computations. We discovered that this combination is proper for visualizing to be embodied and gave a variety of visualizing data for undergraduate mathematics classes. We utilized GeoGebra and Sage for dynamic visualizing and tools used for algebraic calculation as creating a new kind of visual object for university math classes. We visualized important concepts of Linear Algebra as much as we can according to the order of the textbook. We offered static visual data for understanding and studied visual object and further prepared a circumstance that could create new knowledge. We found that our experience on visualizations in Linear Algebra using Sage and GeoGebra to our class can be effectively adopted to other university math classes. It is expected that this contribution has a positive effect for school math education as well as the other lectures in university.

  • This paper is in continuation of the paper very recently published [New Laplace transforms of Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions, Math. Comp. Modelling, 55 (2012), 1068-1071]. In this paper, our main objective is to show one can obtain so far unknown Laplace transforms of three rather general cases of generalized hypergeometric function $_2F_2(x)$ by employing generalized Watson's, Dixon's and Whipple's summation theorems for the series $_3F_2$ obtained earlier in a series of three research papers by Lavoie et al. [5, 6, 7]. The results established in this paper may be useful in theoretical physics, engineering and mathematics.

  • 2009 year new execution of appointments for secondary school teachers was announced at 2004 year by Ministry of Education. The new school teacher appointment has been developed and studied in various aspects of appropriate qualification for good school teacher. In the results of the studies by Korea School Mathematics Education Association and pre-exams by Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation, the Probability and Statistics chapters are less revaluated as 7.5-10%, but we argue those more than 15% as along with our recent Korean school texts reviews(Lee, et al., 2005).

  • In this paper we studied problem solving related with geometric interpretation of algebraic expressions. We analyzed algebraic expressions, related these expressions with geometric interpretation. By using geometric interpretation we could find new approaches to solving mathematical problems. We suggested new problem solving methods related with geometric interpretation of algebraic expressions.

  • The purpose of this article is to introduce a new generalized class of the Wiener-Hopf equations and a new generalized class of the variational inequalities. Using the projection technique, we show that the generalized Wiener-Hopf equations are equivalent to the generalized variational inequalities. We use this alternative equivalence to suggest and analyze an iterative scheme for finding the solution of the generalized Wiener-Hopf equations and the solution of the generalized variational inequalities. The results presented in this paper may be viewed as significant and improvement of the previously known results. In special, our results improve and extend the resent results of M.A. Noor and Z.Y.Huang[M.A. Noor and Z.Y.Huang, Wiener-Hopf equation technique for variational inequalities and nonexpansive mappings, Appl. Math. Comput.(2007), doi:10.1016/j.amc.2007.02.117].
