  • The purpose of this article is to develop a dynamic model of organizational capabilities and knowledge creation, and at the same time identify the organizational capability factors for effective knowledge creation, by empirically analyzing the history of new Quinolone antibacterial drug compound (LB20304a) discovery process at LG, as a case in point. Major findings of this study are as follows. First, in a science-based area such as drug development, the core of successful knowledge creation lies in creative combination of different bodies of scientific explicit knowledge. Second, the greater the difficulty of learning external knowledge, the more tacit knowledge is needed for the recipient firm to effectively exploit that knowledge. Third, in science-based sector such as pharmaceutical industry, the key for successful knowledge creation lies in the capability of recruiting and retaining star scientists. Finally, for effective knowledge creation, a firm must keep its balance among three dimensions of organizational capabilities: local, process, architectural capabilities.

  • While prior work has noted the importance of knowledge creation in gaining competitive advantages, much less is understood about why firms do not actually use what they create. Building upon institutional approaches to organization studies, we offer a new framework to explain the gap between knowledge creation and utilization. We test our framework in an empirical context of sustainable innovation and environmental technologies where ideas of environmental sustainability have recently gained public popularity and shaped how interested audiences make evaluative assessments of firms. In such a context, firms are apt to perceive the social attention toward sustainability to be a normative pressure, which causes them to create new knowledge and develop technologies consistent with the pressure. Using data from the government-initiated certification system for green technologies, our study finds that firms do not always fully implement new environmental technologies they develop in response to the certification program, the situation we refer to as knowledge decoupling. We also examine a set of conditions under which knowledge decoupling becomes more or less amplified. Taken together, our findings show how a firm's knowledge creation and utilization is shaped by its external institutional environment as well as internal learning processes.

  • The knowledge creation in early stages of new service development plays a critical role in the success of the service. The user is a crucial resource in creating knowledge in early stages of development, and user involvement is necessary. There are three roles the user can take part as in service development: informative, consultative, or participative. Based on these different roles, the process of knowledge creation varies. With this background, we proposed to investigate which creative processes need to be passed through in order to positively affect service development based on the role of the user in early stages of Internet service development. This case study was undertaken based on two new projects. The results of this study reveal the relationship between the knowledge creation process and user in early stages of development and at the same time provide guidelines regarding user involvement in actual service development.

  • This study purports to investigate the readiness of the university hospital employees in the knowledge-based management. Data were collected from 550 employees including administrative, nursing, and technical staff of 9 university hospitals located in Seoul and Kyunggi Province through the self-administered questionnaires. The response rate was 79% and 425 questionnaires were used as final data and analyzed using 2 test, t-test, and ANOVA. The main findings of the study are as follows. 1) It seems that most employees of the study hospitals have basic knowledge on the concept of knowledge-based management. This finding implies that the implementation of the knowledge-based management in Korean university hospitals will not likely to face strong resistance from their employees. 2) The results show that Korean hospital employees are still not so accustomed to using e-mail as the main communication tool. This finding suggests that it is necessary to use various communication tools which include electronic data interchange, teleconference, and cyber chatting for facilitating the knowledge-based management in Korean university hospitals. 3) It is desirable to appoint a chief knowledge officer(CKO) for operating knowledge-based management system effectively. 4) A reward system for employees who show a distinguished performance in the creation and sharing of new knowledge should be established. Knowledge mileage system, selection of the best knowledge employee and team will be a good example of the effective reward system. 5) The participation and support from the chief executive officers (CEO) of the hospitals is an important factor for successful knowledge-based management. Furthermore, to make physicians actively participate in the knowledge-based management is another important factor for obtaining valuable outputs from the system. 6) It is found that the knowledge and skills of the hospitals employees on the information technology (IT) are not sufficient for making knowledge-based management more popular. This implies that it is very important to select IT-oriented employees and educate them continuously on the knowledge-based management.

  • We will introduce a new web-based knowledge management system in progress, in which XML-based web information extraction and our structuring knowledge technologies are combined using ontology-based natural language processing. Our aim is to provide efficient access to heterogeneous information on the web, enabling users to use a wide range of textual and non textual resources, such as newspapers and databases, effortlessly to accelerate knowledge acquisition from such knowledge sources. In order to achieve the efficient knowledge management, we propose at first an XML-based Web information extraction which contains a sophisticated control language to extract data from Web pages. With using standard XML Technologies in the system, our approach can make extracting information easy because of a) detaching rules from processing, b) restricting target for processing, c) Interactive operations for developing extracting rules. Then we propose a structuring knowledge system which includes, 1) automatic term recognition, 2) domain oriented automatic term clustering, 3) similarity-based document retrieval, 4) real-time document clustering, and 5) visualization. The system supports integrating different types of databases (textual and non textual) and retrieving different types of information simultaneously. Through further explanation to the specification and the implementation technique of the system, we will demonstrate how the system can accelerate knowledge acquisition on the Web even for novice users of the field.

  • Recent educational policy by coalition government in UK is called knowledge turn. A core competency-based curriculum based on the relative knowledge of the social constructivism and postmodernism has been strongly endorsed by the previous new labor government. The view of knowledge regards knowledge as constructed socially, and emphasizes personal everyday knowledge. But the knowledge-based curriculum based on absolutism is strongly endorsed by the current coalition government. It emphasizes objectivity of knowledge. Social realism criticizes both absolutism and relativism on knowledge. Social realism places disciplinary knowledge above everyday knowledge, and considers disciplinary knowledge as powerful knowledge. But it doesn't mean that social realism neglects everyday knowledge. Rather, social realism empathizes relating disciplinary knowledge to everyday knowledge. Recent Living Geography and YPG(Young People's Geographies) project by the Geographical Association is based on the social realism. The aims of the project is to connect academic geography related to young people's geographies with student's everyday geographies, and academic geographers as mentors, tutors and students together are to make school geography curriculum through conversation.

  • It is an undeniable fact that the modern people's interest in knowledge and information and their roles are some of the core factors used to define the modern society. Besides, as phenomena indicating and leading the modern society, we have fusion, hybrid and convergence, etc. that combine several different elements into a new one. Such changes in social, cultural and technological circumstances require a paradigm shift for the composition of knowledge and information facilities and space. However, more diversified and advanced recently, interfaces for the delivery of knowledge and information cause users to show new behaviors and even change the spatial concept with space composition elements hybridized. Especially for the space of libraries, it is necessary to access and utilize any forms of knowledge and information data (digital + analog) regardless of time and space limitations and approach with an integrated spatial concept likely to change flexibly depending on social demands. In this light, this study aims to make a basic proposal for sustainable integrated-type hybrid space for the space of a public library in this era of knowledge and information. Particularly, this study intends to seek a way to establish a hybrid space model that can effectively converge the most important factors of the space of libraries (human-space(network)-information). With 18 different cases, this study analyzed knowledge and information composition systems, knowledge and information delivery systems and users' space systems. As a result, this study extracted 3 kinds of models, an information-based model, a culture-based model and an education-based model, with the integrated hybrid space model of knowledge and information facilities
