A recent rise in mean global temperatures suggests a shift in the temporal cycles of natural seasons. The impacts of warming trends can alter the temporal and spatial distribution of flora and fauna. Especially, phenological cycles are very sensitive to the occurrence of alternation of hot and cold seasons. Phenological calendars reflect the natural seasonality. In more detail, phenological cycles affects agriculture and human health (i.e. the amount of fruit production and allergies), as well as tourism industries like flower fairs or festivals. (omitted)
A series of 2-phenyl-5-nitrobenzimidazoles substituted at the para positon of the 2-phenyl moiety was synthesized & evaluated for their activity to inhibit topoisomerase I. The structure-activity relationship study revealed that neither the electronic nor lipophilic parameters were related to the topoisomerase I inhibition. A strict spatial requirement seems to be present for retention of topoisomerase I inhibition activity.
Advanced Life Support Systems(ALSS) are being studied to support human life during long-duration space missions. ALSS can be categorized into four subsystems: Crew, Biomass Production, Food Processing and Nutrition, Waste Processing and Resource Recovery. The System Studies and Modeling (SSM) team of New Jersey-NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training (NJ-NSCORT) has facilitated and conducted analyses of ALSS to address systems level issues. The underlying concept of the SSM work is to enable the effective utilization of information to aid in planning, analysis, design, management, and operation of ALSS and their components. Analytical tools and computer models for ALSS analyses have been developed and implemented for value-added information processing. The results of analyses heave been delivered through the internet for effective communication within the advanced life support (ALS) community. Several modeling paradigms have been explored by developing tools for use in systems analysis. they include objected-oriented approach for top-level models, procedureal approach for process-level models, and application of commercially available modeling tools such as $MATLAB^{R}$/$Simulink^{R}$. Every paradigm has its particular applicability for the purpose of modeling work. an overview is presented of the systems studies and modeling work conducted by the NJ-NSCORT SSM team in its efforts to provide systems analysis capabilities to the ALS community. The experience gained and the analytical tools developed from this work can be extended to solving problems encountered in general agriculture.

The aim of the study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of calcium against intestinal cancer in vitro and in vivo. We first investigated the effects of calcium treatment in HCT116 and HT29 human colon cancer cells. At the concentration range of 0.8-2.4 mM, calcium significantly inhibited cell growth (by 9-29%), attachment (by 12-26%), invasion (by 15-31%), and migration (by 19-61%). An immunofluorescence microscope analysis showed that the treatment with calcium (1.6 mM) for 24 h increased plasma membrane ${\beta}$-catenin but decreased nuclear ${\beta}$-catenin levels in HT29 cells. We then investigated the effect of dietary calcium on intestinal tumorigenesis in $Apc^{Min/+}$ mice. Mice received dietary treatment starting at 6 weeks of age for the consecutive 8 weeks. The basal control diet contained high-fat (20% mixed lipids by weight) and low-calcium (1.4 mg/g diet) to mimic the average Western diet, while the treatment diet contained an enriched level of calcium (5.2 mg calcium/g diet). The dietary calcium treatment decreased the total number of small intestinal tumors (by 31.4%; P < 0.05). The largest decrease was in tumors which were ${\geq}$ 2 mm in diameter, showing a 75.6% inhibition in the small intestinal tumor multiplicity (P < 0.001). Immunohistochemical analysis showed significantly reduced nuclear staining of ${\beta}$-catenin (expressed as nuclear positivity), but increased plasma membrane staining of ${\beta}$-catenin, in the adenomas from the calcium-treated groups in comparison to those from the control group (P < 0.001). These results demonstrate intestinal cancer inhibitory effects of calcium both in human colon cancer cells and $Apc^{Min/+}$ mice. The decreased ${\beta}$-catenin nuclear localization caused by the calcium treatment may contribute to the inhibitory action.
This study identifies and compares science content standards that are approved by departments of education in six states: California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia. Specifically, the study examines the goals/visions, the organizing/progression principles, the strands of science content, and earth science content found in the states curriculum standards compared to National Science Education Standards. Although many states followed the recommendations of NSES or Project 2061, the format and content of the state science standards reviewed are very diverse. The diversity seems to reflect the diverse perspectives and needs of the states. The results of this study provide Korean educators and teachers with useful models or examples to incorporate Korean national science curriculum guides into the science curriculum frameworks of their regions or schools.
Repair and rehabilitation of existing structures is becoming a major part of construction, both in the industrially developed and developing countries. Advanced high strength composites are being utilized more and more for these applications because they are much stronger than steel, non-corrosive, and light. The light weight reduces the construction cost and time sustantially. The fibers are normally made of aramid, carbon, or glass and the binders are typically epoxies or esters. One major disadvantage of these composites is the vulnerability to fire. In most instance, the temperature cannot exceed $300^{\cire}C$. Since carbon and glass can substain high temperatures, an inorganic polymer is being evaluated for use as a matrix. The matrix can sustain more than $1000^{\cire}C$. The results reported in this paper deal with the mechanical properties of carbon composites made with the inorganic polymer and the behavior strengthened reinforced concrete beams. The results indicate that the new matrix can be successfully utilized for a number of applications.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of resilience and job satisfaction on organizational commitment in Korean-American registered nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire survey with 203 Korean-American registered nurses living in New York State and New Jersey State. Data were collected from May 8 to August 25, 2012. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The mean organizational commitment of Korean-American registered nurses was $3.34{\pm}0.59$ out of a possible 5.00. The resilience and job satisfaction were significant variables predicting the level of organizational commitment among Korean-American registered nurses, accounting for 50% of the variability. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that it is necessary to identify factors influencing job satisfaction and develop programs to strengthen personal resilience in order to increase organizational commitment.
