  • In this research work, an exact analytical solution for thermal stability of solar functionally graded rectangular plates subjected to uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction is developed. It is assumed that the plate rests on two-parameter elastic foundation and its material properties vary through the thickness of the plate as a power function. The neutral surface position for such plate is determined, and the efficient hyperbolic plate theory based on exact neutral surface position is employed to derive the governing stability equations. The displacement field is chosen based on assumptions that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, and the shear components of in-plane displacements give rise to the quadratic distribution of transverse shear stress through the thickness in such a way that shear stresses vanish on the plate surfaces. Therefore, there is no need to use shear correction factor. Just four unknown displacement functions are used in the present theory against five unknown displacement functions used in the corresponding ones. The non-linear strain-displacement relations are also taken into consideration. The influences of many plate parameters on buckling temperature difference will be investigated. Numerical results are presented for the present theory, demonstrating its importance and accuracy in comparison to other theories.

  • Purpose: Although multi-directional reaching exercises are commonly used clinically, the effects of specific movement directions on the muscle systems of the lower extremities have not been explored. We therefore investigated lower extremity muscle activity during reaching exercises with different sagittal and horizontal plane movements. Methods: The surface electromyography responses of the bilateral rectus femoris, tibialis anterior, peroneus longus, and gastrocnemius muscles were measured during reaching exercises in three directions in the horizontal plane (neutral, $45^{\circ}$ horizontal shoulder adduction, and $45^{\circ}$ abduction) and three directions in the sagittal plane (neutral, $120^{\circ}$ flexion, and $60^{\circ}$ flexion). A total of 20 healthy, physically active participants completed six sets of reaching exercises. Two-way repeated ANOVA was performed: body side (ipsilateral and contralateral) was set as the intra-subject factor and direction of reach as the inter-subject factor. Results: Reaching at $45^{\circ}$ horizontal shoulder adduction significantly increased the activity of the contralateral rectus femoris and gastrocnemius muscles, while $45^{\circ}$ horizontal shoulder abduction activated the ipsilateral rectus femoris and gastrocnemius muscles. The rectus femoris activity was significantly higher with reaching at a $120^{\circ}$ shoulder flexion compared to the other conditions. The gastrocnemius activity decreased significantly as the shoulder elevation angle increased from $60^{\circ}$ to $120^{\circ}$. Conclusion: Our results suggest that multi-directional reaching stimulates the lower extremity muscles depending on the movement direction. The muscles acting on two different joints responded to the changes in reaching direction, whereas the muscles acting on one joint were not activated with changes in reaching direction.

  • Symbiotic stars, believed to be binary systems of a mass-losing giant and a white dwarf with an emission nebula, are known to exhibit very broad wings around Hex that extend to $\~10^3km\;s^{-1}$. The wing formation mechanism is not a settled matter and recently Lee (2000) proposed that Raman scattering of Ly$\beta$ by neutral hydrogen is responsible for the broad H$\alpha$ wings. In this model, it is predicted that. the Hex wings will be polarized depending on the geometric and kinematic distribution of the scatterers relative to the UV emission region. In this paper, we investigate the polarization of Hex wings in symbiotic stars. Noting that many symbiotic stars possess bipolar nebular morphology, we assume that the distribution of neutral scatterers follows the similar pattern with a receding velocity of several tens of km $s^{-1}$ that mimics the expansion of the neutral envelope of the nebula. It is found that the red wing is more strongly polarized than the blue and main part and that the polarization direction is along the equatorial plane. We obtain a typical degree of polarization $\~10$ percent, however, it varies depending on the detailed distribution of H I scatterers We conclude that spectropolarimetry will provide very important information on the origin of the Hex wings.

  • This paper deals with conversion from STL file to Slice cross-sectional information for Stereolithography. The STL file consist of three vertices of triangle and normal vectors in order to represent three dimension shape, but It is very difficult to convert STL file intoSlice file directly, because of file size from one Mbyte to tens of Mbytes. So, The system is accomplished data flow such as neutral.dat, .SL1, .SL2, .SL3, and .SLC file. The data processing is as follows: 1. Create a neutral file including common information. 2. Modify STL file within effective scope of SLA. 3. Calculate a point of intersection between plane equation and line equation. 4. Sort z values by increasing order. 5. Search closed loop by method of singlylinked linear list. The system is developed by using Borland C++ 3.1 compiler in the environment of Pentium PC. We get a satisfactory prototype as a result of application about a lot of household electrical appliances.

  • Supersonic turbulence is believed to decay rapidly within a flow crossing time irrespective of the degree of magnetization. However, this consensus of decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence relies on local isothermal simulations, which are unable to investigate the role of global magnetic fields and structures. Utilizing three-dimensional MHD simulations including interstellar cooling and heating, we investigate decaying MHD turbulence within cold neutral medium sheets embedded in warm neutral medium. Early evolution is consistent with previous studies characterized rapid decay of turbulence with the decaying time shorter than a flow crossing time and power-law temporal decay of turbulent kinetic energy with slope of -1. If initial magnetic fields are strong and perpendicular to the sheet, however long term evolutions of kinetic energy shows that a significant amount of turbulent energy still remains even after ten flow crossing times, and decaying rate is reduced as field strengths increase. We analyse power spectra of remaining turbulence to show that incompressible, in-plane motions dominate.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of the 2 vane pump for wastewater treatment were investigated using response surface method(RSM) with commercial computation fluid dynamics(CFD) software. Design variables of wastewater treatment pump were defined with the meridional plane of the 2 vane pump impeller. The objective functions were defined as the total head and the efficiency at the design flow rate. The hydraulic performance of optimum model was verified by numerical analysis and the reliability of the model was retained by comparison of numerical analysis and comparative analysis with the reference model.

  • Damage detection algorithms based on a one-dimensional beam model can detect damage within a beam span caused by flexure only but cannot detect damage at a joint with prescribed boundary conditions or at the middle part of a beam section where the neutral axis is located. Considering the damage at a welded joint of beam elements in steel structures and modeling the damage with twodimensional plane elements, this study presents a new approach to detecting damage in the depth direction of the joint and beam section. Three damage scenarios at the upper, middle, and lower parts of a welded joint of a rectangular symmetric section are investigated. The damage is detected by evaluating the difference in the receptance magnitude between the undamaged and damaged states. This study also investigates the effect of measurement locations and noise on the capability of the method in detecting damage. The numerical results show the validity of the proposed method in detecting damage at the beam's welded joint.

  • The HI features associated with HII regions and radio sources in the galactic-plane are searched in the Maryland-Green Bank Galactic 21-cm Line Survey. Among the twenty-eight such objects, twenty-five show HI depression features, two no feature, and an emission feature with excess HI brightness temperature. Most of these feature are surrounded by strong HI emissions. The depth of the HI depression is proportional to the radio continuum brightness temperature. The angular dimensions of the HI feature and radio source are comparable. The small HI depressions shown at the positions of HII region located in the outer solar circle are considered to be HI self-absorption features of very cold HI gas.
