  • We suggest a novel method for the evaluation of cochlear implant (CI) speech processing strategy based on neural spike train decoding. From formant trajectories of input speech and auditory nerve responses responding to the electrical pulse trains generated from a specific CI speech processing strategy, optimal linear decoding filter was obtained, and used to estimate formant trajectory of incoming speech. Performance of a specific strategy is evaluated by comparing true and estimated formant trajectories. We compared a newly-developed strategy rooted from a closer mimicking of auditory periphery using nonlinear time-varying filter, with a conventional linear-filter-based strategy. It was shown that the formant trajectories could be estimated more exactly in the case of the nonlinear time-varying strategy. The superiority was more prominent when background noise level is high, and the spectral characteristic of the background noise was close to that of speech signals. This confirms the superiority observed from other evaluation methods, such as acoustic simulation and spectral analysis.

  • The effects of periodic and chaotic behaviour in the Bonhoeffer-Van der Pol (BVP) oscillation of the nerve membrane driven by a periodic stimulating current A1 coswtare investigated through hardware implementation. For hardware implementation of the BVP model. real element values were escaled with computer simulation results to determine the parameter real value. As the parameter A1 varied in the range 0 to 1.3, the BVP model showed an ordinary and reversed period-doubling cascade and a chaotic state. At the low driving amplitude ofa1 the period-doubling showed and at the high driving amplitude of A1 the chaotic state occured. To analyse the BVP model for chaotic behaviour Phase Plane, Time series are used to verify that properties.

  • As fast-speed of aging in modern society has led to increased concern for aging and health improvement of senior citizens, desire about having healthy living-environment has also increased. Living space for senior citizens has to play role of healing for their body feature as well as decrease in mental and psychological function. Color, as important factor that supplements degenerated sense and coping ability caused by aging, it has been revealed through modern medical science that color is effective for making nervous or calming down when it is delivered to one's nerve through sight. The purpose of this study is to suggest basic resource for color arrangement palette of living space and application method by color therapy to improve seniors' mental health by considering psychological and physical features caused by aging. First, consider psychological and physical feature of seniors and color therapy effect through previous research. Second, extract RGB value after selecting color that is helpful for their mental health by using palette from 'Korea Agency for Technology and Standards'. Third, extract other 3 colors that are similar with extracted color from 'NCS 1950 Color System'. Fourth, deduct palette of 3 color arrangement by using 'NCS Navigator' program. Lastly, extract arrangement palette for them by considering difference in visual features, and then suggest arrangement application for each palette through Computer Simulation.

  • In this paper, we proposed a heart activity control model for simulation of the aortic sinus baroreceptor, which was the most representative baroreceptor sensing the variance of pressure in the cardiovascular system. And then, the heart activity control model composed electric circuit model of the cardiovascular system with baroreflex control and time delay sub-model to observe the effect of time delay in heart period and stroke volume under the regulation of baroreflex in the aortic sinus. The mechanism of time delay in the heart activity baroreflex control model is as follows. A control function is conduct sensing pressure information in the aortic sinus baroreceptor to transmit the efferent nerve through central nervous system. As simulation results of the proposed model, we observed three patterns of the cardiovascular system variability by the time delay. First of all, if the time delay over 2.5 second, aortic pressure and stroke volume and heart rate was observed non-periodically and irregularly. However, if the time delay from 0.1 second to 0.25 second, the regular oscillation was observed. And then, if time delay under 0.1 second, then heart rate and aortic pressure-heart rate trajectory were maintained in stable state.

  • Visible light communication is a communication method using an LED's blinking(ON/OFF), it has a feature of light because of the limit of perception by the human's optic nerve. LED' dimming control used in the VLC system is important factor needed to provide energy saving and life benefits. With advances in VLC system, MIMO technology has received much attention in that it can be obtain channel capacity proportionate to the number of antenna. Therefore, in this paper, with RC method which is one of the MIMO style in VLC system, it is compared communication performance using RZ-OOK, VPPM, MPPM and OPPM. As a result of the simulation was run against this, MPPM works well in terms of Power requirement and OPPM works well in terms of Spectral efficiency and Bandwidth requirement, also it was confirmed that there is a significant impact on the communication performance of each modulation scheme according to the dimming.

  • Purpose: The advantages of ocular proton therapy are that it spares the optic nerve and delivers the minimal dose to normal surrounding tissues. In this study, it developed a solid eye phantom that enabled us to perform quality assurance (QA) to verify the dose and beam range for passive single scattering proton therapy using a single phantom. For this purpose, a new solid eye phantom with a polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) wedge was developed using film dosimetry and an ionization chamber. Methods: The typical beam shape used for eye treatment is approximately 3 cm in diameter and the beam range is below 5 cm. Since proton therapy has a problem with beam range uncertainty due to differences in the stopping power of normal tissue, bone, air, etc, the beam range should be confirmed before treatment. A film can be placed on the slope of the phantom to evaluate the Spread-out Bragg Peak based on the water equivalent thickness value of PMMA on the film. In addition, an ionization chamber (Pin-point, PTW 31014) can be inserted into a hole in the phantom to measure the absolute dose. Results: The eye phantom was used for independent patient-specific QA. The differences in the output and beam range between the measurement and the planned treatment were less than 1.5% and 0.1 cm, respectively. Conclusions: An eye phantom was developed and the performance was successfully validated. The phantom can be employed to verify the output and beam range for ocular proton therapy.

  • It is important to devise methods for assisting dentists to consistently determine implant positions and directions and to accurately perform drilling tasks during dental implant surgery. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to tooth implant placement planning which deals with the determination of the positions and directions of multiple implant fixtures for a set of missing mandibular teeth and suggests the selection of the sizes and types of the implant fixtures. We combine Korean standard data in the sizes and positions of human teeth with the patient specific 3D models of mandibular jawbones, nerve curves, and neighboring teeth around the missing teeth in order to determine the positions and directions of the implant fixtures for the missing teeth. Using the geometric and spatial information of the jawbones, the teeth and the implant fixtures, we can construct the 3D models of surgical guide stents which are crucial to perform drilling tasks with ease and accuracy. Adopted in 3D simulation of dental implant placement, the approach can provide surgeon students with good educational contents. We also expect that, with further work, the approach can be used as a useful tool to plan for dental implant surgery.
