  • The high pretilt angles in nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) have been generated on robbed polythiophene (PTP) surfaces with alkyl chain lengths. The pretilt angle of the NLC was observed on unidirectionally rubbed PTP surfaces with alkyl chains with more than 9 carbon atoms. We obtained the Pretilt angle of 15~40$^{\circ}$ on rubbed PTP surfaces with 10 carbon atoms in the a1ky1 chain. Also, the pretilt angles of 65~80$^{\circ}$ of NLC were obtained on rubbed PTP surfaces with 11 and 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. We suggest that this high pretilt angle generation in NLC is due to the surface-excluded volume effect by the alkyl chain lengths between. the LCs and the PTP surfaces. Finally, we conclude the odd-even effect on rubbed PTP surfaces is clearly contributed to the pretilt angle generation.

  • In this paper, We coupled fluid balance and director balance equation from Ericksen-Leslie's continuum theory and observed the motion of Liquid Crystal molecular. We simulated flow velocity and director distribution in which flow effect is considered in switching on and switching off state. We interpreted the dynamic response characteristic caused by the flow. As the result of the simulation, We could see the flow effect. In the case of Twisted Nematic(TN) cell, this flow caused abnormal twist temporarily in switching off state. We could prove that this abnormal twist is a direct cause of optical bounce phenomenon known well until now with the result of simulation. In addition, We analyzed the mechanism of the fast response due to flow in the case of Optically Compensated Bend(OCB) cell.

  • In this study, the effect of the crystallinity of polyimide (Pl) and the birefringence of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) for pretilt angle generation on rubbed PI surface containing thiophenylene moieties has been demonstrated. The induced optical retardation produced in rubbed Pl surfaces decreases on increasing the imidization temperature. We suggest that the pretilt angle of 4-cyano-4'-n-pentybiphenyl (5CB) depends on the crystallinity of the rubbed Pl. The order of pretilt angle in NLCs is 5CB>PCH5$\geq$CCH5 at rubbing strength(RS)=150mm (medium rubbing) on rubbed PI surfaces. We suggest that on rubbed Pl surfaces the pretilt angle increases with increasing number of phenylrings in the NLC core.

  • A series of new dimesogenic compounds having two identical, terminal Schiff base type mesogens and a central tetramethylene spacer were synthesized. Their thermotropic and mesomorphic properties of the compounds were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy. The compounds with X= -F, -Cl, -Br, -CN and $-OCH_3$ were enantiotropically nematic liquid crystal. In contrast, the compounds with X= -I and $-CF_3$ were non-liquid crystal. The nematic forming efficiency of the groups was in the order of -CN > $-OCH_3$ > -Br > -Cl > -F.

  • We investigated response characteristics of twisted nematic (TN) cell with different nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) and cell gap d on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface. High transmittance and fast response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface were achieved by using high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) and low cell gap d. The response time of TN cell on the rubbed PI surface was measured 5.1 ms. The transmittance and response time of the TN cell on the rubbed PI surface decreased with decreasing ${\Delta}nd$.

  • The effect of nematic liquid crystal(5CB-4-Cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl) on the amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide thin film transistors(a-IGZO TFTs) was investigated. Through dropping the 5CB on the a-IGZO TFT's channel layer which is deposited by RF-magnetron sputtering, properties of a-IGZO TFTs was dramatically improved. When drain bias was induced, 5CB molecules were oriented by Freedericksz transition generating positive charges to one side of dipoles. From increment of the capacitance by orientation of liquid crystals, the drain current was increased, and we analyzed these phenomena mathematically by using MOSFET model. Transfer characteristic showed improvement such as decreasing of subthreshold slope(SS) value 0.4 to 0.2 and 0.45 to 0.25 at linear region and saturation region, respectively. Furthermore, in positive bias system(PBS), prevention effect for electron trapping by 5CB liquid crystal dipoles was observed, which showing decrease of threshold voltage shift [(${\delta}V$]_TH) when induced +20V for 1~1000sec at the gate electrode.

  • In this study, we present a fully automated system that combines camera technology with liquid crystal technology to create a polarization camera capable of detecting the partial linear polarization of light reflected from an object. The use of twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystals that electro-optically modulate the polarization plane of light eliminates the need to mechanically rotate the polarizing filter in front of the camera lens. Images obtained using these techniques are imaged by computer software. In addition, liquid crystal panels have been produced in a square shape, but many camera lenses are usually round, and lighting or other driving units are installed around the lens, so space is optimized through the application of a circular liquid crystal display. Through the development of this technology, an electrically switchable and space-optimized liquid crystal polarizer is developed.

  • We propose a novel bistable nematic liquid crystal cell, which has a dual-frequency liquid crystal material and pixel-isolating polymer wall formed by an anisotropic phase separation of a mixture of liquid crystals and UV-curable pre-polymers. The proposed cell has two stable states of left- and right-handed ${\pi}$-twist. The switching between the two states is achieved by using a sequential waveform of low and high frequencies. A transmissive bistable liquid crystal display is designed, which achieves high contrast ratio by using the proposed cell and optical films.

  • Liquid crystal (LC) mesophase materials manifest a variety of phase transitions. The optical properties of LCs are highly dependent upon the phase and orientation of the optical axis with respect to the polarization of incoming light. Studying the LC phase transitions is significantly important for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. In this study, we demonstrate the propagation velocity of the phase boundary between the nematic and isotropic phase of 4-Cyano-4-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal for different electric fields using a polarized optical microscope. The results demonstrate that the propagation velocity of the phase boundary exhibits a peak value for a specific voltage, attributed to the supercooling of the isotropic phase of the LC. The analysis of the propagation velocity for different electric fields also provides a simple optical platform to measure the thermal anisotropy and voltage dependent thermal properties of the homogeneously aligned LC.
