We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a-C:H thin film as working gas at 30W rf bias condition. A high pretilt angle of about 5$^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of 250$^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of 300$^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high LC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface as working gas at 30W rf bias condition can be achieved.

Ultra-small optical anisotropy of a rubbed polyimide (PI) alignment layer is quantitatively characterized using the improved reflection ellipsometer. Twisted nematic (TN) cells are fabricated using the rubbed PIs of known surface anisotropy as alignment layers. Distribution of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in the TN cell is characterized using transmission ellipsometry. The retardation of the rubbed PI surface increases as rubbing strength increases. The tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface decreases as rubbing strength especially as the angular speed of the rubbing roller increases. Pretilt angle of LC molecules in the TN cell shows strong correlation with tilt angle of the optic axis of the rubbed PI surface. Both the apparent order parameter and the effective twist angle of the LC molecules in the TN cell decrease as the pretilt angle of LC molecules increases.

We have studied the motion of charged micro-particles that are immersed in a nematic liquid crystal (LC) and controlled by in-plane field. The LC is an anisotropic liquid such that the viscosity of the LC depends on flow direction, phase of the LC, and temperature, which affects the motion of the charged particles under the influence of electric field. This study shows that the motion of charged particles mainly depends on the applied voltage and the LC phase, but does not show any significant influence from the initial alignment of LC, although one may expect directional difference in drag force due to interaction between LC and particle. The viscosity changes due to temperature variations in nematic phase also show no signification influence on particle velocity when compared to the effect from varying in-plane field strength.
Recently, it is widely studied to liquid crystal (LC) alignment using ion-beam exposure. Because conventional rubbing method has some problems such as defects from dust and electrostatic charges and rubbing scratch during rubbing process. Moreover rubbing method needs cleaning process to remove these defects. Therefore rubbing-free techniques like ion-beam method are strongly required. We studied LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of twisted nematic LC on the polyimide surface. In this experiment, a good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with the ion-beam exposure on the polyimide (PI) surface was observed. We also achieved low pretilt angle as function of ion-beam irradiation angles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis provided chemical evidence for LC alignment by controlling ion-beam irradiation angles. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) on PI surface. Some other experiments results and discussion will be included in the presentation.
We have studied polarity effects of dielectric anisotropy effects on electro-optical characteristics of a twisted nematic mode driven by fringe electric field, which has wide viewing angle characteristics. Our device is designed as normally black mode between parallel polarizers. The perfect polarization conversion of incident light, which passes through a polarizer, is achieved, when it passes through the twisted liquid crystal (LC) layer. If an electric field is applied, the LC molecules with a positive (or negative) dielectric anisotropy rotate parallel (or perpendicular) to the horizontal component of a fringe electric field as increasing transmittance. From the calculated results, enhanced transmittance of the fringe field-twisted nematic (FF-TN) mode with positive dielectric anisotropy of + 8.2 can be obtained.
This paper presents an improved vertical alignment nematic liquid crystal mode characterized by the protrusions or slits of the top substrate and additional stripe type common electrodes with polarity switching of the bottom substrate to improve multi-domain vertically aligned (MVA) and patterned vertically aligned (PVA) nematic modes. MVA and PVA modes have disadvantages such as an LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between the top and bottom protrusions in MVA mode or the top and bottom slits in PVA mode. Therefore, the stripe type common electrode generating a horizontal electric field and the protrusion or slit producing some pretilt of liquid crystals (LCs) were used to improve the LC disclination, which influences the transmittance and response speed. The simulation results showed that the proposed VA mode has higher transmittance than the MVA and PVA modes. As a result, the proposed VA mode can improve the response speed and transmittance remarkably, which makes it useful for upgrading the LCD display quality.
A symmetric-viewing inverse-twisted-nematic (ITN) liquid crystal display (LCD) with alternating alignment layers was developed using a stamping-assisted rubbing (SAR) technique. A patterned layer of a fluorinated acrylate polymer was transferred onto the first rubbed vertical-alignment layer prepared on a substrate by stamping. The fluorinated acrylate polymer provided a protective layer covering the first rubbed alignment layer during the second rubbing process, which promoted the vertical alignment of the LC molecules. The LC cell in the ITN geometry with two orthogonally rubbed alignment layers showed symmetric-viewing characteristics with fourfold symmetry. The SAR technique was shown to be a mask-free alignment method of producing multidomains for symmetric-viewing LCDs.
LCD is not very expensive and according to the principle that twisted-nematic LCD can modulate by electric signal, lots of researches been developed about many of theory, methods of design and calculating parameters effectively. In 1999 J. A. Davis et ai. proposed the method of deciding upon extraordinary and ordinary axis direction, which is based on Blazing Effect, inspect into changes of diffraction patterns. But in laboratory, it is difficulty to observe 5th or 6th diffraction pattern, and not clear in mathematical. In this paper, illuminating circular polarized beam been to TN LCD (twisted-nematic LCD), we found extraordinary axis direction with inspecting into maximum intensity distribution appeared in the side of analyzer Using Jones matrix method, we endowed with mathematical propriety.
In this paper we investigated the transcription of liquid crystal (LC) alignment method by using memory effect of nematic(N) LCon polymide(PI) surface with side chain as for non-rubbing alignment techniques. That the monodomain alignment of aligned NLC is observed by microscope textures in the cells on PI surface with side chain. We obtained that the pretilt angle of NLC are generated about 3.7$^{\circ}$on PI surface. We suggest that the LC alignment by using transcription alingnment method is attributed to memory effect of NLC on PI surface.
The nematic liquid crysta](NLC) aligning capabilities using a-C:H thin film deposited at the three kinds of rf bias condition were investigated. A high pretilt angle of NLC on low substrate rf bias applied a-C:H thin films was observed and the low pretilt angle of the NLC on high substrate rf bias applied a-C:H thin films was observed. Consequently, the high NLC pretilt angle and the good aligning capabilities of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film deposited at 1 W rf bias condition can be achieved. It is considered that pretilt angle of the NLC may be attributed to substrate rf bias condition and IB energy time. Therefore, LC alignment is affected by topographical structure forming strong IB energy.
