A centrifuge model study is carried out to investigate the behavior of pile subject to negative skin friction induced by pile installation, ground water drawdown and surcharge loading. A single end-bearing pile is examined as the induced negative skin friction would induce the most severe stress on the pile structural material as compared to friction piles. In addition, the behavior of the pile under simultaneous negative skin friction and dead/live loads is examined. To facilitate detailed interpretations of the test results, the model setup is extensively instrumented and involves elaborate test control schemes. To further examine the phenomenon of negative skin friction on an end-bearing pile, finite element analyses were conducted. The numerical analysis is first validated against the centrifuge test data and subsequently extended to examine the effects of pile slenderness ratio, surcharge intensity and pile-soil stiffness ratio on the degree of mobilization of negative skin friction induced on the pile. Finally experimental and numerical studies are conducted to examine the effect of applied transient live load on pile subject to negative skin friction.
The vibration resulting from railway operation is transmitted through the tunnel to adjacent buildings and the transmitted vibration radiates structure-borne noise which is causing a lot of public complaints by its negative effects to the buildings near tunnel. This study performed the parametric study about sleeper space and track support stiffness in order to reduce vibration on the concrete track and near structures. In this study, it was compared and performed vibration analysis and field test about these. In addition, as changing the sleeper space and track support stiffness, vibration of the structures was evaluated. Via this study, in terms of reducing the figure of the sleeper space and track support stiffness to the half, as vibrating acceleration transmitted through concrete round is getting reduced, it transmitted through the tunnel was analysed to the same phenomena. In conclusion, suggested track structure into this study, it can be applied to the track structure of existing line, and it is expected to be a new effective anti-vibration method to prevent public complaints.
The major objective of this study is to investigate the fatigue effects of rail pad on High Speed Railway with concrete slab track system. It analyzed the mechanical behaviors of HSR concrete slab track with applying rail pad stiffness based on fatigue effect(hardening and increasing stiffness) on the 3-dimensional FE analysis and laboratory test for static & dynamic characteristics. As a result, the hardening of rail pad due to fatigue loading condition are negative effect for the static & dynamic response of concrete slab track which is before act on fatigue effect. The analytical and experimental study are carried out to investigate rail pad on fatigue effected increase vertical acceleration and stress and decrease suitable deflection on slab track. And rail pad based on fatigue effect induced dynamic maximum stresses, the increase of damage of slab track is predicted by adopting fatigue effected rail pad. after due consideration The servicing HSR concrete slab track with resilient track system has need of the reasonable determination after due consideration fatigue effect of rail pad stiffness which could be reducing the effect of static and dynamic behavior that degradation phenomenon of structure by an unusual response characteristic and a drop durability.
Steel shear walls are used to strengthen steel and concrete structures. One such system is Partial Attached Steel Shear Walls (PASSW), which are only connected to frame beams. This system offers both structural and architectural advantages. This study first calibrated the numerical model of RC frames with and without PASSW using an experimental sample. The seismic performance of the RC frame was evaluated by 30 non-linear static analyses, which considered stiffness, ductility, lateral strength, and energy dissipation, to investigate the effect of PASSW width and column axial load. Based on numerical results and a curve fitting technique, a lateral stiffness equation was developed for frames equipped with PASSW. The effect of the shear wall location on the concrete frame was evaluated through eight analyses. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed to investigate the effect of the shear wall on maximum frame displacement using three earthquake records. The results revealed that if PASSW is designed with appropriate stiffness, it can increase the energy dissipation and ductility of the frame by 2 and 1.2 times, respectively. The stiffness and strength of the frame are greatly influenced by PASSW, while axial force has the most significant negative impact on energy dissipation. Furthermore, the location of PASSW does not affect the frame's behavior, and it is possible to have large openings in the frame bay.
The chloride attack of the top mat of reinforcing bars is a major cause of deterioration of comcrete deck of plate girder bridges. This is caused by a current design method which requires a top mat of reinforcing bars to resist a negative bending moment in bridge decks. In recently, empirical evidence has indicated that the top transverse reinforcing bars can patially or fully be eliminated without jeopardizing the structural integrity of a deck. So, one of the most efficient way to increase durability of concrete deck of bridges is the development of new design method that reduce or eliminate the top mat reinforcing bars, mad it is possible by the exact analysis that considering the negative bending moment reducing effect which introduced by relative deflection of plate girders. In this study, we develop the new bridge deck analysis method that considered the effect of relative girder deflection by applying the principles of slope deflection method of frames, and that is fine tuned with results of finite element analysis. This new approach evaluate a bending moment in a deck based on the effect of relative girder deflection as well as the magnitude of wheel loads, the girder spacing and stiffness, deck stiffness and the span length
The negative stiffness of an active or semi-active damper system has been proven to be very effective in reducing dynamic response. Therefore, energy dissipation devices possessing negative stiffness, such as viscous inertial mass dampers (VIMDs), have drawn much attention recently. The control performance of the VIMD for cable vibration mitigation has already been demonstrated by many researchers. In this paper, a new optimal design procedure for VIMD parameters for taut cable vibration control is presented based on the fixed-points method originally developed for tuned mass damper design. A model consisting of a taut cable and a VIMD installed near a cable end is studied. The frequency response function (FRF) of the cable under a sinusoidal load distributed proportionally to the mode shape is derived. Then, the fixed-points method is applied to the FRF curves. The performance of a VIMD with the optimal parameters is subsequently evaluated through simulations. A taut cable model with a tuned VIMD is established for several cases of external excitation. The performance of VIMDs using the proposed optimal parameters is compared with that in the literature. The results show that cable vibration can be significantly reduced using the proposed optimal VIMD with a relatively small amount of damping. Multiple VIMDs are applied effectively to reduce the cable vibration with multi-modal components.
Purpose : Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) is often accompanied by pain and limited range of motion of the jaw joint, which affect patients' quality of life and result in hypertrophy or hyperactivity of the muscles around the jaw joint. In this study, we compared the muscle thickness and tone of the masseter and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles and the jaw range of motion in individuals with and without TMJD. Correlation comparison was performed on the results of the TMJD group. Methods : This study included 40 patients; 20 patients were assigned to an experimental group (TMJD group) and 20 to a control group (non-TMJD group). Ultrasonography, myotonometry, and measurements performed with digital Vernier calipers were used to determine the changes in muscle thickness, muscle tone, and maximum jaw opening, respectively. The independent t-test was used for intergroup comparison of data, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to compare correlations in the TMJD group results. Results : We observed a significant intergroup difference in the masseter and SCM thickness during the relaxed and clenched phases (p<.05). A significant intergroup difference was also observed in maximum jaw opening (p<.05). With regard to muscle tone, we observed a significant intergroup difference in frequency (p=.011) and stiffness (p=.011) of the masseter, as well as in the frequency (p=.009) and stiffness (p=.026) of the SCM. We observed a moderate negative correlation (r=-.524) between maximum jaw opening and the frequency of the masseter. Additionally, we observed a moderately negative correlation between jaw opening and muscle stiffness (r=-.321). Conclusion : Planning exercise programs to treat patients with TMJD who present with pain should focus on efforts to reduce muscle thickness and achieve muscle relaxation (to reduce muscle tension) for improved jaw range of motion.

Over the past years techniques for non-linear analysis have been enhanced significantly via improved solution procedures, extended finite element techniques and increased robustness of constitutive models. Nevertheless, problems remain, especially for real world structures of softening materials like concrete. The softening gives negative stiffness and risk of bifurcations due to multiple cracks that compete to survive. Incremental-iterative techniques have difficulties in selecting and handling the local peaks and snap-backs. In this contribution, an alternative method is proposed. The softening diagram of negative slope is replaced by a saw-tooth diagram of positive slopes. The incremental-iterative Newton method is replaced by a series of linear analyses using a special scaling technique with subsequent stiffness/strength reduction per critical element. It is shown that this event-by-event strategy is robust and reliable. First, the model is shown to be objective with respect to mesh refinement. Next, the example of a large-scale dog-bone specimen in direct tension is analyzed using an isotropic version of the saw-tooth model. The model is capable of automatically providing the snap-back response. Subsequently, the saw-tooth model is extended to include anisotropy for fixed crack directions to accommodate both tensile cracking and compression strut action for reinforced concrete. Three different reinforced concrete structures are analyzed, a tension-pull specimen, a slender beam and a slab. In all cases, the model naturally provides the local peaks and snap-backs associated with the subsequent development of primary cracks starting from the rebar. The secant saw-tooth stiffness is always positive and the analysis always 'converges'. Bifurcations are prevented due to the scaling technique.

The lubricating characteristics of negative pressure slider were performed by using divergence formulation method with the coordinate transformation method. This method makes it possible to deal with an arbitrary configuration of a lubricated surface. The pressure profile of the slider is calculated. These results are compared to that from direct numerical method. The steady-state, including minimum film thickness, pitching and rolling angle are calculated by multi-dimensional Newton-Rapson method. The stiffness and damping characteristics are also calculated.
