Objectives: Examine the difference of Chosun acupuncture from the acupuncture in Myung, Chung Dynasty Method: This paper examines the acupuncture mentioned in the classic of Introduction to Medicine For this, the special traits of Introduction to Medicine acupuncture was analyzed. Secondly, the research on the contents of Introduction to Medicine acupuncture quoted in the classic of Essential Rhymes of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine, and Experimental Prescriptions of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was carried out. Result: Introduction to Medicine put much importance on "method of acupuncture following the five circuits and six qi" (子午流注針法) and Song of Acupuncture and Moxibustion through comparing "eight methods of acupuncture following the five circuits and six qi" (子午八法) and "scattered needling method". The doctors in Chosun Dynasty, howevery, did not adopt this theory with their own standards on acupuncture. On the contrary, they put more importance on the inquiry of historical evidence on river point and extraordinary points. Conclusion: The acupuncture studies of Chosun Dynasty had already formed its own standards on the medical theories, and its direction to which it was headed was different from that of the Myung, and Chung Dynasty in China.

Objective : Auricular acupuncture is a method of treatment that involves needling the ear in order to produce relief of symptoms. This concept was first developed by P.Nogier, french doctor and referred to as somatotopic representation. Many authors have commented the fact that the vagus nerve supplies the external auditory and the concha. The aim of this randomised, single blind study was to investigate whether auricular acupuncture of the ear produced changes in the pulse rate, an indicator of vagal tone. Methods: 10 healthy man volunteers were divided into normal and epinephrine stimulation group. Then each group was divided into vagus area acupuncture and control area acupuncture group again. Epinephrine stimulation group was injected by epinephrine 0.3cc twice, first. All of them were needled in either the vagus area or control area of the ear, and pulse rate changes were measured by patient monitor over 1 hour. Results : In the epinephrine stimulation group, there was significant differences in the pulse rate change between vagus area acupuncture and control area acupuncture group. After injection of epinephrine, the basal pulse rate was increased 1.3~1.4 times in the control group. However, in the vagus area acupuncture group the basal pulse rate was increased only 1.1~1.2 times.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to compare immediate response after acupuncture on Local Acupoints group and Distal Acupoints group for neck pain patients. Methods : From January 2nd 2008 to August 31th 2008, 10 neck pain patients were divided into 2 groups. One group(test I group) was taken Local Acupoints, and the other group(test II group) was taken Distal Acupoints. To check immediate response and satisfaction of needling, visual analog scale(VAS), range of motion(ROM), clinical evaluation grade and five-point likert scale were used before and after treatment. Results : Both acupuncture therapy showed immediate response and good effect on neck pain. And test I group showed more immediate response than test II group on all categories. Conclusions : Local Acupoints group can be recommended as an immediate and useful therapy to treat neck pain.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report the case prognosis and evaluate treatment and prevention of pneumothorax after acupuncture treatment. Methods : A 32-year-old slender male complained of pain in the interscapular area. As a result, acupuncture needling and manual technique were performed to trigger the points of trapezius and rhomboid muscles. After this, chest pain and dyspnea occurred. Pneumothorax was confirmed by chest radiography and symptom progression was observed for 14 days while high pressure oxygen was administered. Results : The chest pain disappeared after 4 days of pneumothorax, and most of the related symptoms disappeared after 14 days. Conclusion : For acupuncture treatment to the interscapular area, the depth and manual technique should be carefully performed.

The effects of acupuncture are complex and how it works is not entirely clear. Research suggests that the needling process, and other modalities used in acupuncture, may produce their complex effects on a wide variety of ways in the brain and the body. For example, it is theorized that stimulated nerve fibers transmit signals to the spinal cord and brain, thus activating parts of what is called the central nervous system. The spinal cord and brain then release certain hormones responsible for making us feel better overall and, more specifically, feel less pain. In fact, a study using images of the brain confirmed that acupuncture increases our pain threshold, which may explain its ability to produce long-term pain relief. Also, acupuncture may increase blood circulation and body temperature. It may also affect white blood cell activity (responsible for our immune function).

To elucidate the effect of dorsal acupoints for canine electroacupuncture anesthesia, mongrel dogs(6 heads: 2.6-10.5kg, 3 males and 3 females) were used. After needling perpendicularly to Tian-Ping(GV-5) and Bai-Hui(GV-20), the electrodes were connected with positive to Tian-Ping and negative to Bi-hui, respectively using with veterinary electroacupuncture apparatus(TEC AM-3000). The electric conditions were 2-4V and 30 Hz. The pain of body surface was checked by hemostatic forceps. The effect of electroacupuncture andesthesia was appreciated by application of laparotomy(2 heads), ear trimming and tail amputation(1 head), castration(2 heads) and enterotomy(1 head), respectively. Induction time, clinical findings and operation findings were investigated under the electroacupuncture anesthesia. The induction time of electroacupuncture anesthesia was very rapid, approximately 1 minute and the pain of body surface including the extremities was not detected. As for clinical findings during electroacupuncture anesthesia, consciousness was evident, pupil reflex was weak and blepharoreaction was existed. As for operation findings, pain was not detected during incision and suture, and bleeding was relatively small volume. The grade of electroacupuncture anesthesia was excellent in all cases applied with ear trimming and tail amputation, laparatomy, castration and enterotomy. Considering above all findings, it was thought that electroacupuncture stimulation at Tian-Ping and Bai-hui examined in the present study induced excellent electroacupuncture anesthesia for dogs.

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is one of the common musculoskeletal conditions of the shoulder which may develop sensory-motor and autonomic dysfunctions at the various level of the neuromuscular system. The pain and dysfunction caused by MPS were primarily treated with physical therapy and pharmacological agents in order to achieve painfree movements. However, in recent years intramuscular electrical stimulation (IMES) with conventional electrode placement was used by researchers to maximise therapeutic values. But, in this study an inverse electrode placement was used to deliver electrical impulses intramuscularly to achieve neuro-modulation at the various level of the nervous system. Nine patients with MPS were treated with intramuscular electrode stimulation using inversely placed electrodes for a period of three weeks. All nine subjects recovered from their shoulder pain and disability within the few weeks of intervention. So, this inverse electrode placement may be more appropriate for chronic pain management.

Objectives : Through the analyze of formative factor of time sense and the vital movement temporal rhythm in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經). Methods : We find out the principle and methods of Chronomedicine and Health Preserving in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經), and this finding will direct the life nurturing for later generations. We find that time sense had been established in Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經), which had yin-yang and five elements characteristic. Results : There have temporal rhythm of functions of zang-fu viscera, meridian and collateral, qi and blood. Based on the theory of correspondence between human body and natural environment, established principle of health maintenance about based on yin and yang, temporal rhythm of visceral qi. Conclusions : Established health maintenance methods based on time such as adjusting-spirit according to time, regular daily life, dietary regimen according to time, needling and moxibustion according to time. These methods will guide syndrome differentiation and therapeutic method and Medication which based on suitable time.

Stimulation of the auricle is known to be effective in reducing obesity. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether stimulating a specific auricular acupuncture point is effective on suppression of appetite. Cholesystokinin (CCK) is known to induce a powerful feeding response after central administration and particularly abundant in the cerebral cortex. In food-deprived rats exhibiting a strong drive for feeding, decreased CCK release was markedly detected in the cerebral cortex of the brain. Needling the fasted rats on the specific auricular region increased the CCK level of the cerebral cortex. In conclusion, stimulating the specific auricular points increases CCK-expression in the cerebral cortex of the fasted rats and may be useful for controlling obesity.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the Korean medical treatment on sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSNHL). Methods : The patient who has been diagnosed SSNHL had symptoms with hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. The patient was received outpatient to Dunsan oriental hospital for 3 months and was treated with oriental medicine(acupuncture, herbal-medicine, converting of Hominis placenta, warm needling and vapor treatment). Two approaches were used in order to evaluate the effect of the treatment. The hearing recovery was measured with pure tone audiometry, and the decrease of tinnitus and aural fullness was identified by patient's subjective expression. Results : The patient has his hearing restored fully and the symptoms of SSNHL accompanied with adjunctive symptoms including tinnitus and aural fullness were improved.Conclusions : This study shows that the Korean medical treatment effects on the SSNHL.
