  • In this paper, we propose a near optimal controller design method for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) of MW-class direct-driven wind turbine systems based on SDRE (State Dependent Riccati Equation) approach. Using the solution matrix of an SDRE, we parameterize the optimal controller gain. We present a simple algorithm to compute the near optimal controller gain. The proposed optimal controller can enable PMSGs to precisely track the reference speed determined by the MPPT algorithm. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal controller.

  • The determination of a production sequence is an important problem in a batch process operation. In this paper a new algorithm for a near optimal production sequence of N product in an M unit serial multiproduct batch process is proposed. The basic principle is the same as that of Johnson's algorithm for two-unit UIS system. Test results on a number of selected examples exhibit the superiority over previously reported results. In addition, a tabulation technique is presented to calculate the makespan of a given sequence of production for all processing units under UIS mode.

  • This study proposes an intelligent semi-active isolation system combining a variable-stiffness control device and ground motion characteristic prediction. To determine the optimal control parameter in real-time, a genetic algorithm (GA)-fuzzy control law was developed in this study. Data on various types of ground motions were collected, and the ground motion characteristics were quantified to derive a near-fault (NF) characteristic ratio by employing an on-site earthquake early warning system. On the basis of the peak ground acceleration (PGA) and the derived NF ratio, a fuzzy inference system (FIS) was developed. The control parameters were optimized using a GA. To support continuity under near-fault and far-field ground motions, the optimal control parameter was linked with the predicted PGA and NF ratio through the FIS. The GA-fuzzy law was then compared with other control laws to verify its effectiveness. The results revealed that the GA-fuzzy control law could reliably predict different ground motion characteristics for real-time control because of the high sensitivity of its control parameter to the ground motion characteristics. Even under near-fault and far-field ground motions, the GA-fuzzy control law outperformed the FPEEA control law in terms of controlling the isolation layer displacement and the superstructure acceleration.

  • Semi-active control equipments are used to effectually enhance the seismic behavior of structures. Magneto-rheological (MR) dampers are semi-active devices that can be utilized to control the response of structures during seismic loads and have received voracious attention for response suppression. They supply the adaptability of active devices and stability and reliability of passive devices. This paper presents an optimal fuzzy logic control scheme for vibration mitigation of buildings using magneto-rheological dampers subjected to near-fault ground motions. Near-fault features including a directivity pulse in the fault-normal direction and a fling step in the fault-parallel direction are considered in the requisite ground motion records. The membership functions and fuzzy rules of fuzzy controller were optimized by genetic algorithm (GA). Numerical study is performed to analyze the influences of near-fault ground motions on a building that is equipped with MR dampers. Considering the uncontrolled system response as the base line, the proposed method is scrutinized by analogy with that of a conventional maximum dissipation energy (MED) controller to accentuate the effectiveness of the fuzzy logic algorithm. Results reveal that the fuzzy logic controllers can efficiently improve the structural responses and MR dampers are quite promising for reducing seismic responses during near-fault earthquakes.
